Why is everyone afraid Mara, the deva that LARPs as an omnipotent God? The answer is because it and its followers can harass, torture, and possibly kill you and your loved ones if it does not like what you are doing. That leaves people with two choices, submit to Mara and its evil agenda OR find a way to deal with the evil it sends your way. Of course, the righteous choice, and the only correct choice in The Lord Inquisitor's opinion, is to find ways to deal with the evil Mara and its cultists send your way. It is pretty damn hard in some cases, so I completely understand why many people 'submit' to Mara. So how does one deal with Mara's bullshit? First and foremost, do everything in your power to attain Stream Entry and try to convince those in your immediate (and extended if you wish to be extra righteous) family and friends to do the same. This step is important because those who attain Stream Entry attain a "holy aura of protection" and Mara will fuck with you less. Also, it is impossible for you to go to hell as a Stream Enterer, so that is pretty sweet too. If you need proof of this "holy aura", read the story in The Pali Canon about a Mara perishing after it wounded a disciple of the previous Teacher (The Buddha).
