Abyss required no horizontal investment because people could just roll a few of the most broken characters and clear through almost everything. IT is absolutely there to make people spend money as they rotate it between abyss cycles and it demands you roll for more characters rather than just a few strong ones. Their "compensation" for this was to make abyss give 100 extra primos per cycle(along with 800 from IT). IT was even so easy on its launch that they added a new "harder" mode on the update right after.
