While Vanta might have bad takes and taste all the time, and the American VA scene is a mess, I don't think that'd be a reason for him not to move or whatever. That wording being about friendship is pretty shady though, don't think dubbing studios like NYAV Post works that way. Japanese VA scene is also entirely based on a ranking system however, with the amount of years you've worked mostly. Few years in isn't even $200 an anime episode, decade and a half is another hundred maybe. I was mostly talking about how if you're not even somewhat competent in the local language before moving to a place, people often end up hanging out with people from outside the country with similar backgrounds that they can relate to. And along with it being at least in part friend FOMO, Wilson knows almost nothing about Japan outside of some basic tourism niceties, even just in the overrepresented otaku way as opposed to wider media and history. I'd have similar thoughts if say Ryoma, who is similarly culturally unaware and hasn't debuted 3D yet, moved without knowing Japanese at all.
