What are some of your favourite fights in Mecha? Anonymous 04/21/2025 (Mon) 15:47:52 No. 2751
Animation, tactics and strategy, character resonance etc Thoughts on CGI for mechs? Apparently the number people able to animate mechs by hand drawing is getting smaller. Thoughts on Studio Orange’s output? How you do think it compares to the best of 2D animation?
The fight between Big O and Big Duo is probably my favorite part of the whole series.
>>2751 Pretty much everything in Yamato 2199 and SEED Freedom.
Basic bitch take but the Gouf Custom fight in 08th ms. I hate the rest of the series but that justified sitting through it. Dislike CGI for the most part, it's less offensive than in other genres but it still just looks off to my eyes. I remain hopefully that it's just a maturing technology and will eventually be done well, but I can't imagine it reaching the heights of good hand drawn.
>>2852 People who say this "maturing technolog" thing don't really make sense, CGI has been around for 40 years, widely used for 30 and in anime for 10. how long does it have to mature to look good?
>>2918 I duno man, I find it jarring as fuck but I've seen the claim that whenever it's used it's being used to save money in which case no wonder it's subpar. That said, Macross Plus is one of my favorite things and that uses some that is dated but doesn't bother me at all. MZ it's more prevelent and I find it more jarring but it's still leagues ahead of some modern stuff I've seen, so maybe talent / budget / knowing where and when to use it plays enough of a part that it won't look jarring as hell at some point. I sure as fuck don't know how long it'll take though and I'm tired of seeing it marr a series I love, but it unfortunately doesn't seem to be going away so hoping it'll get better seems better than abject despair.
it's not even close, the best animated fight in mecha history is absolutely Escaflowne vs Scherazede. it's old, but the original Vision of Escaflowne anime is easily the most beautiful anime i've ever seen. maybe, MAYBE Violet Evergarden surpasses it, but even then, i don't know.

>>4020 Factual statement
>>4122 the really insane thing is that this was not a main series for bandai. the original director dipped to work on G Gundam and left the project with no lead. we got it because the final director came on and was like "yeah no, we're making a shoujo mecha" and despite being a side project has animation THIS good.

Big O vs Big Duo
>>2751 I thought the fights in Majestic Prince were pretty stellar all round, despite being CGI. Definitely some of Orange's best. But you can also tell that, despite the space fights being as insane as you'd expect wars to be, they realised their best was the earth combat against Klein so they basically just did it again for the climax in the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ek-V0xQzkwI
