/gpg/ - Gunpla/Plamo General Anonymous 04/17/2025 (Thu) 05:27:17 No. 36
-=READ THE GUIDES=- Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General! For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you! For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry! >Why won't anyone answer my question? Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can. -=THE GUIDES=- >Gelgoog Guy's gunpla guide: gunpla.buyfags.moe >Funaka's gunpla guides: Building Gunpla: files.catbox.moe/fj5azc.pdf Scratchbuilding: files.catbox.moe/2d9ppa.pdf >Falldog's gunpla guide: otakurevolution.com/content/laymans-gunpla-guide >A guide to other types of plamo: mediafire.com/file/1vf1aw7v91pz5pa >Master Kawaguchi's gunpla tips: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJV1h9xQ7Hx-SoCOivVEHNDOl16VWLB3A >Saintism's gunpla photography guide: saint-ism.com/category/gunpla/photography -=OTHER RESOURCES=- >Gundam lineart (There's a lot!): pastebin.com/KgGJFkHa >Dalong's gunpla reviews and documentation: dalong.net >Schizophonic's gunpla/plamo reviews: schizophonic9-2.com >KenBill Blog's gunpla/plamo reviews: blog.kenbill.com >Past Groupbuilds: flickr.com/photos/197891373@N06 >Monthly Restock List: old.reddit.com/r/gunpla/1jkfd9u Prior thread (archive): https://desuarchive.org/m/thread/23201832/

Frens. Now I need /wsg/, /an/, /toy/ and /vm/ and it'll be great
Still plodding along on my Kshatriya, a lot of work in the upper backpack skirt connection and extra arms. Here's some test fits for the storage racks. Not entirely satisfied.
>>511 I don't even like Sneed, but the MGEX Freedom Gundam looks so cool. I should try painting more inner frames gold.
(1.77 MB 2268x4032 1720173194491247.jpg)

>>529 It's a nice kit, very detailed. But I was also disappointed with it on some levels given its high price. The hands for exemple are only ball pegs, no extended wrist articulation like MG barbatos or vidar. Four plated shoulder parts have an ugly mold line that you have to sand which is a shame for plated parts. Some fits are also very tight which is unusual for bandai kits. I broke the arm/chest pegs like a retard because I didn't check before painting, but also didn't mask the pegs so that one is on me
This wouldn't have happened if we just put shitpost in the groupbuild poll
>>556 That's definitely off, right? Inaugural 8chud groupbuild ideas? "8" build (anything involving the number 8. Suit model #, Ez-8, spiders, octopods, suits from 0080 or 83, two balls stacked on top of each other to look like an 8. Sky's the limit)

I'm glad I found this place. Last time I checked here this board was ded. With nowhere to lurk all day I decided to paint instead >>37 this here gold came out pretty nicely (camera doesn't do it justice)
chinky cthulhu
I want to try my hand at painting an RG kit, cheap Char Zaku II from Hobby Lobby so no total loss if I fuck it up, and I'm staring at the inner frame. Do I just treat it like I would an HG kit or is it better to just prime/paint the parts that will be visible? Does painting the inner frame make it less poseable?
>>974 I didn't have issues with painting the inner frame. The MS frames are made out of polypropolene and need metal/multi primer if you want your paint to stick.
>>982 >The MS frames are made out of polypropolene and need metal/multi primer if you want your paint to stick. Now that I didn't know. I was just going to spray some Mr. Hobby Gray primer and call it a day. Going to have to put that kit on the back burner till I can get my hands on some metal primer, appreciate it anon.
Debating if I should get a MG 1.5 Rick Dom since I’ll probably stick with things already in stock thus I won’t have to worry about tariffs. I’m worried about something about the joints being too tight and I’ll have to sand them I read.
>>982 Wouldn't the primers that stick to resin also work on PP ? Like tamiya primer
Another question. Whats a good God Gundam? I’m not a fan of RG line (too many little pieces that are finicky), so it either the MG which is 25 years old at this point or the HG which is nice if simple and I’ll have to paint the black lines because goddamn I’m not using those stickers.

about halfway done on this bailu chink kit. also first time using lacquer paint
Powered GM got here from suruga-ya and the box is in perfect condition. Why mark anything used, it's all pristine.
>>1001 Japs are autistic with the second-hand market.
Are there any model kits that apply the principles of tsugite?
>>996 Maybe. I've found Tamiya Primer to be kind of thick, but you should be fine. It's Mr. Hobby Surfacer which didn't stick at all for me.
>>1014 I'm not the anon who asked. Mr surfacer 1500 generally has bad adhesion to anything that isn't PS and ABS. Mr primer works on metal, I used the 1000 recently, works well enough. I was wondering if the same would work on PP since RG god is on my to do list this year and it has a couple PP parts. Otherwise I'll just use metal primer, I have both mr hobby and tamiya ones. The latter is really handy with its little brush for polycaps
>Went to local hobby store to se what they had >Picked up RGM 79FC Striker >Orbiter-2000 from AC6 too >Asked if they had Jegan models >They put in an order for me and will let me know when it's available >Realize I should have asked them to order me a Heavygun model too because it's my favorite GM model and really hard to find Guys I fucked up
>>1045 Why don't you call them? Tell them you're the guy who was there earlier and that you forgot about the Heavygun.
>>1049 They've already closed.
>>659 lol at "gunpla threads will wane after GBF ends".
>>1000 How is it? I keep flipflopping between thinking it looks badass and thinking it's just another Chink slop.
>be new to gunpla and accidentally clip off the ball joints in Zaku's front skirt flaps >after finishing it and an RG RX-78, try fixing them but only one works >in the end, nipped off the back half of the soft skirt to have a mixed material set up so I'll have the hard flaps that can hold the axe holster and the second rifle magazine on the back Also, is it normal for models to be sold out everywhere for a while before more get put back out or is something more serious going on with the Mk. II RG kits
>>1291 >clip off the ball joints in Zaku's front skirt flaps this is actually encouraged.
>>1292 is it, because when i say that, i mean the bit that actually attaches the hard flap to the waist
>>1294 Oh, I thought you meant you split the skirt in two pieces. No, no that's no good actually.
>>1297 well, both are actually true. It started with me fucking up the bit that connects the flap to the waist but in the end, I snipped the back half of the soft skirt and just layered that underneath the hard skirt option which, once I got everything reassembled and connected to the torso, actually seems to work out fine

>>37 >>201 Still working on my Artillery Arbalest custom. I'm redoing the knees. No solid idea on the shapes but for those kneeling poses I need larger and angular armor parts with some armor plates or studs to dig into the ground and give traction For the feet I need to make the from bigger and redesign the side and rear foot part. The ankle need to be modified to move sideways, the ball joints sucks.
Started a real grade Epyon and found out the wire for the beam sword wasn't there. Not accidentally lost it or threw it away, it actually was not packaged in the box. Ideas for substitutes?

>>483 It's a product of its time.
Is it still worth it to buy a Megalomaria Principal still for like 40 bucks plus shipping? Seems like the other kits are kinda just that one with added stuff.
>>1066 it's impressive for the price. >metal skeleton, so far no issues with anything fitting >tasteful clear parts with some selection for straight clear or orange clear >some nice gold enamel detail parts >plastic quality seems fine >many hand options for posing the only shitty part of the kit so far is that there are a handful of real headass gate locations for the gold enamel pieces. the instruction book is actually the worst part of the whole thing for me. maybe I'm retarded but I feel that the angles they choose for some of the diagrams are really bad, and there have definitely been a couple instances where they use the wrong part image in the diagram. the part number was correct though so not too bad. I respect the bandai premium a bit more now, their QC is on another level
>>1386 oh also it comes with a stand with extra posts for mounting the UAV drones. really an insane value for $65
>>1358 I dont think all the other kits are like that. Penetrator is, but others not really

It's really too bad they don't seem to be selling this version of RX from the Idol music video. I'm taking it upon myself as my first painting project to try and make this a reality. Anyone know if there's any more angles of the Miku version of RX-78-2?
>>2219 they made t-shirts and acrylic stands of that gundam colorscheme, you can use those images as reference too
(163.26 KB 317x265 model kit ptsd.png)

These stickers made building MAILeS high grades together a total chore. Yes, I built all four.
>>2228 OH sweet, thanks! I've been looking exclusively for gunpla I completely forgot about standard mech
>[Hangzhou International Exchange Station] Return Well that sucks. My last order out of china that would have got here before the tariffs hit got returned to sender before it even left the country. Looks like I'm not getting it now.
>>2234 I didn't think they were that bad. Also why are you building four of them?
>friends want to surprise me >from what I managed to guess they are trying to buy me the PG banshee >try to hint them it's a bad idea >they probably didn't get the hint Oh boy it's gonna be a wild ride. Should I use silver or dark gold for panel line?
Does anyone have experience with talking things out with ali sellers? I can see a few shops selling the bootleg F90 with the A-L mission packs, but every last one of them is just the full bundle of the gundam and the packs, even though even bandai sells them separately. Before 4chin got colony dropped I remember an anon saying he could get just weapon runners from them, so I guess it's possible in theory but I'd like to know more. Unless someone found a shop selling just the packs, that'd be easier.
>>2159 personally I like right more but go with whatever (you) think looks better

oh we're back, i've been having gpg withdrawals >>483 just learn japanese >>2190 spray from further away so the levelling thinner has time to evaporate a bit before it hits the plastic. you risk getting a bit of an orangepeel texture though >>2537 i've been telling you guys this for years. tamiya cement is trash because acetone sucks, mr cement s is better because it's acetone+mek, mr cement sp is even better because it's just diluted mek. a litre of 99% mek will last you a lifetime and costs as much as a single bottle of mr cement

I paint without primer
(2.90 MB 4032x3024 20250421_125659.jpg)

How do you guys usually manage your paint? I've been decanting frequently used colors into chink squeeze bottles and prethinning them to make airbrushing ez. I'm wondering how common using everything from glass bottles versus decanting is.
>>2819 personally i just leave everything in the glass jar it comes in and thin it as i use it. i thin as much as i think i'll need for a session (well, usually a bit more to be safe) in 30ml medicine measuring cups and tip any excess back into the jar when i'm done. i thin by eye and i imagine this would fuck you over if you rely on ratios, but i have limited space and storing the small stackable glass jars is nicer than a bunch of squeezy bottles >>2792 yeah, you and everyone else that uses lacquers on styrenes. you need primer for resin though
>>2368 just ask them
picked up a bootleg hg gusion and hg tolro for £5 each in the aliexpress sale over the weekend. no idea what brand, but i don't even care if they're shitty for £5 each
why do people make such a big deal about seam lines might just be my eyesight getting worse over time but with modern kits I can barely notice them usually

>>3007 mecha musume is /m/ and always has been >>2949 because they're extremely obvious and when you see them it's clear that the builder didn't bother to put any real effort into their build because they didn't do something as basic as weld the seams
>>3020 there were anons who posted sosai shojo teien in that thread too
>>3007 /toy/ died, char finally gets a figuarts figure. Its pottery.
>>3007 >>3020 I really wish there was a big plamo/resin kit general. The thread on /toy/ was the closest there is but Ive always been confused at the absence of a general for resin painting, I thought it would be something a little bit more popular on a chan site.
>>3139 >The thread on /toy/ was the closest there is i saw more anons paint resin stuff in /a/'s buyfag thread (mostly prepainted anime figures) than on /toy/. even then it was probably fewer than 1 per month, not really enough to sustain a thread.
Is it ok here to be talking about girlpla? (aka, mecha musume kit lines like FAG/MD/30MS)
>>3144 Why wouldn't it be ? They're plamo
>>3139 Are you me? Sadly with statues banned on /toy/ for no apparent reason there really wasn't a place for them. /a/ had a teeny bit of GK discussion, but the buyfag threads are 99% prepaints and the board is too fast for a hobby thread like that anyways. I've been to local figure shows and there are tons of western resin statues that have a community painting them too. Maybe this site can have one finally. Or I'll try forcing one in /jp/ if we have to crawl back.

seam lines are soul
>>2949 if you the time to deal to paint your kit you have more than enough time to deal with seams, its a basic modelling skill.
>>3154 Moderoids are way better than anything Bandai puts out these days.
>>3194 I VASTLY prefer their line-up but wish they'd use something like Bandai's KPS instead or re-evaluate their joint tolerances, especially when it comes to their ABS joints. That shit is WAY too tight and given the sore state that ABS plastics seem to be in in general these days risks cracks over time or snapping.
(166.72 KB 832x782 hollow.jpg)

Give me all the seamlines you want but miss me with this shit.
>>3211 This is honestly an easier fix than a lot of seam lines, just fill with Milliput and sand the excess. Idk if I’m just bad with seam welding but I almost never get it right the first time, I always have to apply putty at least once which makes it more annoying.
>>3229 Use CA glue for seam welding
>>3230 Would you recommend thick or thin type? I’ve just been using Tamiya cement
>>3229 >Idk if I’m just bad with seam welding but I almost never get it right the first time keep the parts as close together as you can without touching, like less than a millimetre gap if possible, then apply cement and let capillary action spread the cement along the seam. you might need to apply cement a few times until there's a 'film' of cement suspended in the gap between the 2 parts. leave it like that for like 10 seconds then squish the parts together hard. works flawlessly every time, most of the time when i've seen people have issues they're not properly utilising capillary action
>>3237 Honestly I don't know. I use pic related that I bought at my local warhammer shop. Last time I glued the parts with tamiya cement then later applied some glue over it with a toothpick but you can fuse the parts directly with CA. I did it on shoulders, on the right shoulder I did it with cement and putty and the left one with cement and CA glue. After painting, I can still see a slight line on the right shoulder, and the left one is flawless

Can you guys give me a qrd on what each of the many colors of surfacer are for? As far as I can tell Grey: Standard, neutral White: For bright colors with bad coverage Black: For metallics. The Gaianotes kind is pretty glossy which works well for metals Flesh: For one pass skin Silver: One pass silver Gold: One pass gold Nazca: One pass non metallic inner frame But the others are strange. Interesting, new Product A is set for the 3rd while the red gundam is out on the 31st, wonder why bandai is still keeping it a secret, there is no way its going to be the zeon gm to go with next weeks G cuck episode would it, theres no reason they would still keep the white gundam secretive
>>3497 pink is for warm colours. for example yellow over white looks sickly. pink undercoat also makes reds and oranges look "fuller" the others are honestly memes. you only really need grey, white, black, pink, and you can get away with only grey and pink for the most part
>>3516 Where's this schedule at?
How long after using a lacquer top coat should I wait before I start applying my metallic coat? I'm using Alclad 2 for reference, and I heard it runs a bit hotter than other lacquer paints.
>>3585 https://global.bandai-hobby.net/en-us/schedule/ the one upside of bandai's ugly less-usable website redesign is that they have an english version of the schedule page now
>>3516 Probably the OYW Zaku.
>>3595 no reason they would still keep that secretive, but who knows, it probably will be the white gundam or green zaku
>>3146 I'm struggling ideas with themes for builds besides randomly piling on extra equipment on the mounting slots like it's GBWC or smth. I'm mainly limited by reusing some of my backlog kits as customization fodder and trying to avoid buying new kits for that. Any tips on how you guys get ideas for theming individual builds?
>>3211 Seal most of it with plaplate then spread some matching colored sprue putty as the final layer if you're unwilling to paint.
>>3717 You could try theming your builds around exotic animals. Using this toucan as an example, you might copy its color scheme. Or you could incorporate a feather pattern into your girlpla's outfit. His facial coloring might make for an interesting mask design, if you're into that.
Apparently I'm a complete failure at painting. Really should have been more careful with some projects. I want to opt out for some simpler customization for the kits that are more expensive. My idea is to panel line, weather and maybe add some decals. I guess that the right process would be to: clean, matt coat, panel line, apply decals, apply some weathering pencil, topcoat with glossy coat. Is this the right way to think? I'll probably try first with my HG Aerial that has been in the bleach jar for the last 3 weeks.
>>3730 Let me guess, you tried to hand brush tamiya acrylics?
>>3733 Exactly. The primer wasn't the issue though. I messed up with metallic paint and now want it back to normal.
>>3735 Never use Tamiya's for handbrushing, those are acrylic-lacquer and way too "hot" to brush: the brushstrokes from your second coat will reactivate and tear away the paint underneath. Also good luck removing lacquers if you let them cure, they bond with plastic like it's nothing, that's why you don't need a primer for these. If you want to do hand-brushing use water-based acrylics like Vallejo, Citadel, AK and such. I wouldn't recommend it but you can even prime with a brush if you want, I mostly use gesso or sanding+primer.

finally done, really bummed that there was literally no more cans of testors copper rattle cans left in Australia so I had to go with a metalic gold for the rest of the inner frame. Any suggestions for the next kit? I heard the batsh is a pain to build
>>3742 >clean, matt coat, panel line, apply decals, Don't panel line on matt, you need a smooth surface for that, just do it on plastic if you don't paint, same goes for decals. Use varnish last

What mobile suits you want to see getting Ver Ka kits?
(1.52 MB 1316x2000 g3 saviour.jpg)

>>3757 g3 saviour >>3742 tamiya acrylics aren't acrylic lacquer, they're just alcohol-based acrylics. tamiya lacquer and mr color are acrylic lacquers, as opposed to nitrocellulose lacquers (which you are unlikely to ever find in the hobby space)

I fucking love the Dijeh. Glad to see some of you bros here, missed gpg. Story time: My local store randomly decided to start selling P-bandai shit, and now i got a kit that i'd never thought i would ever be able to get, the Re/100 Shokew, absolute beauty. My only real issue with it is the size, shame victory kits are so small, but it's a excellent kit, that shouldn't have been P-Bandai only.

>Groupbuild guy never showed up It's over isn't it? Maybe I can finally do my mahou shoujo build now.
>>3743 Super nice, I love the KOG. Are the red bits decals?
Where do you get the latest infos for third-party kits/bootlegs?
I ordered my first couple of suits from HLJ along with a couple of basic tools to get me started on the hobby. I did want to get a Police Zaku from Gqu...uX but I noticed it's on backorder. I thought about keeping the stuff in their private warehouse while I waited for it to be back in stock, but apparently these are being scalped or something, so my question is, how often do they restock these kits and do I even have a chance of getting one at all in the next couple of months or should I just order everything else and let it sit until it's back and maybe order some more suits when it does? Only to justify the shipping costs.
>>3845 HLJ almost never fulfills their gunpla backorders. I'd just have everything ship now unless there's a non-Bandai kit you are waiting for.
>>3842 weibo for original IPs, baidu tieba for legally grey stuff. If you're filthy EOP, some of the reviewers that get sent review pieces are also on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@shentianzuzhangKANDATOYS/
>>3846 That's what I feared. Guess I'll just ship in my basic bitch starter pack and maybe hope the Zaku will be in stock sometime in the future.

>>3919 putting the meat into meat shield
>>3845 Since its a newer kit from a current series it will be regularly reprinted for a while. I don't know how long it will take HLJ to get their backorders filled though.

>>3988 holy shit is this new? considering pbandai only puts out 2 kits a year i'm interested in i don't care about paying £60 to a scalper for l-gaim kits
>>3988 Shit like this is why I endorse bootlegging.
>>3988 >>4030 came out to £56 incl shipping from my friendly neighbourhood scalper… that's like ⅔ of what i paid for the 1/100 (really 1/72) volks ims siren f, the nagano tax is real >>4031 have bootleggers done any of the pbandai lgaim or dunbine kits so far? i know one company has done the amplified ryujinmaru but it seems like bootleggers only really do gundam stuff, but all the best pbandai stuff is non-gundam

new boat plamatea
>>4327 giwiwh
>>4327 It took us this long to finally get some posable Azur Lane girls, either action figures or model kits. I've heard Plamatea is as decent as GoodSmile's other line Moederoid so I am interested.

This thing still looks stupid. I wish either Artemis or Areus had gotten a kit instead.
>>4380 plamatea is actually max factory, the same guys that make the figmas. they're just published/distributed by goodsmile
>>4407 >plamatea is actually max factory >same guys that make the figmas >they're just published/distributed by goodsmile So is it all just one big company??
>>4416 kind of. max factory is owned by goodsmile but i'm pretty sure they operate independently in terms of designing and manufacturing their products and goodsmile just handles the marketing and distribution. as opposed to moderoid where the design and manufacturing is handled in house at goodsmile as well. i could be wrong but that's how i understand it, i think max factory started as an independent company then goodsmile bought them out
(364.76 KB 591x786 firefox_2smr1ZKvPW.png)

I saw this today. Is Tamiya gold enamel not actually an enamel? I wanted to airbrush some and clean it up with an enamel thinner for trimming. What do you guys usually use for gold trim details?
When are the G-Quacks HQs supposed to get restocked? i want my Popo Zaku.
>>4383 I was given a Helios for my birthday and I'm gonna put the binders on rightside up. I don't care that it interferes with the satellite cannons, they can go over the shoulder instead of being underslung. The binders pointed upward look stupid as hell.

>>4814 yeah. its worth the price

preorders up >13k for 1/144 fixed pose i bet the 1/100 articulated volks version will be a similar price lmao
>>4817 the hg ibo frames can be a bit floppy and struggle to hold up the big weapons, there's like 4 different moulds for the frames (same parts, just different layout runners) and the later ones seem to hold up better (presumably because the moulds have seen less use). in any case, you can tighten the joints to some extent like you would tighten any kit joint
>>4817 >>4836 half of the hgibo kits i own are kinda loose. But it all cases it's because of the polycaps wearing out or outright cracking, and this problem plagues most of the hg line. Some nail polish or topcoat will fix 95% of the issues the frame has. The other major point of floppiness is the chest drum parts separating when you pose them. Again, easily fixable with some cement or glue.
>>4822 >ourslopsure even if it was half the price i'd go for volks any day of the week
After 500 years, I noticed that Mr Mark Setter has white powdery residue settled at the bottom. Are you supposed to shake and mix that powder in?
Did all the buzzword posters get lost in the migration?
>>4897 their junone was great though i'm gonna get both, personally. i really like the mk3

i'll just keep both open in tabs
>and it's dead again KWAB
in celebration i will begin work on chinkgod kino (without retail box) not sure if i wanna paint this guy or just topcoat
>>4836 Later ones as in the later ones that got released, rather than any reprint of any IBO kit? Wouldn't the earlier kits then fare better, if they were one of the first uses of the mold If the joints were fixable then it doesn't seem like a gigantic issue, I know some people's Z'Goks can be loose but it's still a fun kit >>4870 >it's the fucking polycaps I've mostly used glue, I'll try to be careful with nail polish, I remembered the floppy issue but not whether it was the easily fixable kind, thank you
So basically everyone says to build first, then paint. However, I'm doing a recolor of RX-78-2 and it really seems like painting before building is the better option. Any thoughts or opinions from people more experienced?
>>5126 Build, disassemble then paint. I always look at the finished model before painting, it helps me notice visible seams or articulation problems so I can fix those before painting.
>>5278 consult the chart and see for yourself
>>5329 So everything is plamo?
