Gundam finally competing against Warhammer 40k in traditional gaming Anonymous 01/04/2025 (Sat) 21:36:55 Id: 642292 No. 1252
This is actually some really big news since Games Workshop has been getting sloppy recently and Gundam can introduce some new competition into the space. Still, I figured this was huge enough news to make a thread on the subject since Gundam is officially /tg/ now. Personally I don't know what to expect, but I hope for good things.

Is this actually a threat to GW? I know 40k is a thing in Japan, albeit niche, and I also know that Gunplay and other things like garage kits are huge so Japanese consumers aren't totally foreign to the idea of painting your own miniatures/figures.
>>1252 Kinda cool. Might be more interested once they release more info. >>1254 >Is this actually a threat to GW I hope it ends up becoming one. GW needs a solid kick in the ass and a boot to the head to follow it up.
Looks kinda interesting. Not really a fan of gundam though. I wonder if this gets popular that we might get a sirbine mini. I would absolutely pay for that.
>>1256 >>1257 Honestly, expansion with non gundam mechs (like SRW, dunbine, dragonar, mazinger...) would be REALLY cool, even if it's just for the minis.
I hope they fuck GW up.
>>1328 We can only hope. I mean I doubt it will kill them but at least it might scratch them a little.
I kind of just want a dedicated OYW game, but that would probably just wind up being a ruleset, if anything. Still, looking forwards to it so I can make kitbashed abominations out of all of the gelgoogs.
>>1252 I love it conceptually. But does the game actually look fun? That part is kind of important.
>>1252 Do we know what kind of game this is going to be? Like actual army building or just big hero Gundam? A squad of Zaku does sound like it would be cool but I don't know if they'll be an option or if it would just be Char's Zaku or The Zaku Amazing or whatever.
>>1399 It's hex-based, so it's more like BattleTech than 40k. And that's pretty much it.
If only we got the rules, we could try to run some sims and get a feel on whether or not it might be fun.
>>1403 That's probably a good call. Will at least mean less arguments over an inch here and there for movement. I'm surprised they haven't given us more yet if they've already got a trailer and everything ready.

I don't think assemble is a threat or even really wants to be, it's just them dipping a toe in and seeing if it's worthwhile, but I do think japan opening up to miniatures more would be fantastic. It's a growing scene right now. Who knows, japan has a big history for hex and chit as well so maybe some of those licenses will come though. A votoms tabletop game would be just fine.
I am actually really excited for both the gundam games coming out, my mate managed to get the starter set and man, Zeon is my cup of tea when it comes to card games. Super, super, super simple ruleset as well.
>>1432 >both the gundam games coming out You mean this and the card game or is there another Gundam game coming? Either way I've been interested in how that card game could play and hope this mini based game is going to be fun.
>>1461 Yeah, I meant this and the card game. I will say the card game has a solid foundation and I like they got a cross promotion going on with the pre-order structure decks getting you minis as well. Smart move.
>>1466 That's cool. I had been curious about the card game. It hasn't shown up at any of my locals so I wasn't even aware it was out yet.
>>1547 My friend managed to get into the beta and my LGS were putting up the pre-orders for the structure decks, hence why I was able to get it. He knew what I liked as well, he got me the Zeon attack! deck which comes with two Zaku II and a Char Zaku II mini for the miniatures game.
>>1557 >comes with two Zaku II and a Char Zaku II mini for the miniatures game. Wait so the card game has some ties to the miniature game? If so that's kind of interesting. A unique way to try and get people to try both. Some friends of mine are interested in the miniature game but we also do card games so this could be an easy two for one if they're actually connected outside of being the same franchise.
>>1568 No, that's just a small promotion for asseble, the minis that pack has are only for use as props, they don't interact with gameplay in any way.
>>1252 This feels like something that should have existed in the 1970s.
>>1253 This is actually really lame because it's not what I wanted. There's no consistent scale, it's cross-universe and it's not a period appropriate wargame. Imagine if they did a proper war game that let you play in space and on ground. A game with multiple eras in the Universal Century (One Year War, Gryps Conflict, Late UC) or any of the AU setting. Not this RX78 vs Barbatos vs Gundam Wing bullshit.
>>2337 They've said they're going to support canon scenario play. I think they're playing it safe otherwise. The only option they would have is something like starting with a strict UC OYW setting and then slowly expanding it, but that means you'd wind up with shitloads of models that can't be used with each other or highly popular eras having to wait their turn. Knowing how disparate the appeal can be in these games, you'd basically wind up with stuff like Victory put on the backburner for years, and then not being able to be played with any other models anyway. It's easier to just make a little of everything and then say "if you wanna play UC, only use the UC models".
>>2605 >but that means you'd wind up with shitloads of models that can't be used with each other or highly popular eras having to wait their turn. There's plenty of scenarios where OYW units could be used way past the OYW. They could just launch boxed sets based on specific battles from let's say three eras. To build up a general roster of things. Victory for example the League Militaire/EFF side just has a handful of mobile suits you'd need for a decent force. Gun-EZ and Victory Gundam being their main units. Releasing just the basic stuff and then expanding would be the way to go.
>>2312 How about 1982?
it looks like the models are non-scale and non-poseable. I would unironically prefer a game that used existing sd models.
>>2643 There's also just too many timelines lol, imagine people showing up to a games night and you've got dudes with wing, seed, uc, x, whatever. They'd have to make like 12 entirely separate playable games to appeal to the same market as just making one crossover setting and then expanding that with more restricted historical modes.
>>2337 Eh, I think that's not really realistic. Expecting them to have suits only for specific scales or battles would be unprofitable. The safest bet would be what they seem to be doing and making everything work with everything and then presumably letting the players decide if they want to have battles with only suits of a specific era or scale.
>>2764 One would hope they'd at least have slightly different poses and options for load outs on the sprue. Or maybe it's a runner considering Gundam and all.
I want the gundam bootleg manufacturers to start doing GW bootlegs. Having high quality plastic alternatives for a fraction of the price is the one thing that can force GW to lower its prices.
>>2951 There are some online stores selling things like "Robot Skeletons" or "Power Armor Nuns" aren't there? Just slightly not actually Warhammer to avoid legal issues while still clearly aping Warhammer. Never seems like those catch on much. I don't know if it's just not profitable from their perspective or if there isn't enough demand. Either way, yes. I hope there's some side markers with different models and sculpts for the minis too.
>>2952 There's recasters with a near-full GW catalog (including out of print and legends minis) avaliable but they are made with resin which can be kinda fragile and doesnt have all the material properties that make plastic easy to work with.
>>2944 the interesting thing about gundams for me is how all the parts fit together and the articulation. some glue together model where the whole thing is only like 4 parts might as well be a space marine.
>>3046 But as far as we have been shown, Gundam Assembke uses dedicated fixed pose uncolored models just like WH. As far as I know, there’s no information about this game being compatible with normal 1/144 Gunpla.
I don't even give a fuck about whatever boardgame they're gonna tack on, I just want those itty bitty robot pieces to paint/customize :D
I'm surprised Battletech isn't Warhammer's main competitor, even at a cursory glance the gameline is ripe for making a minis game out of it.
>>1252 If what you want is 1/144 scale gundam wargames to recreate 08th MS Team or whatever, then just find some homebrew rules and go from there.
