/bgg/ Board Game General Anonymous 04/21/2025 (Mon) 16:15:06 Id: e8c923 No. 2124
This general encompasses all board game genres, whether it be Euro, American, Warfare, or Card-driven Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/raw/h8Tz2ze8 Thread Question >What's your favorite board game of all time? How many times has that spot been taken by other games? >4chan is dead, where else have you migrated to for your bg discussion? Don't say the gulag, please.
>>2124 man, /bgg/ was pretty slow on 4chan, it's gonna be molasses here. Also, mansions of madness 2nd edition is still my favorite game to play, since my wife doesn't like a lot of competitive games.
>>2171 >/bgg/ was pretty slow on 4chan It'll have to do in the meantime, God knows I'm not gonna try it on soyjak party lol. As for my favorite game, I think it's a toss up between Pax Renaissance, Through the Ages and Barrage lately. I'm lucky that all 3 games have a pretty active community through digital versions, TtA has an excellent phone app and Barrage is gonna get a Steam version soon. Pax Ren is on BGA too but most people there are absolute savants at the game and can consistently notice ways to beat you in 5 turns, it's crazy.
>>2179 was thinking of getting Barrage, how's the expansions? are they must have?

>>2197 The first Expansion (Leeghwater Project) was originally part of the base game and was cut up by the publishers into an expansion that released at the same time as the game during the Kickstarter. So in a way the whole game was designed with it in mind, HOWEVER, I'd say the game is much better off without it because Barrage's economy is super tight and that means all your choices and what the other players do is really important, LWP kinda loosens that up by giving you the option of doing something else if you are blocked from an important spot or action, also makes having money slightly easier which removes pressure from finding cheap ways to push early or long term ways to be safe. The Nile Affair, Colorado Connection and Duel expansions are alright, they have their own gimmick that you can make us of and promotes competition but their bonuses are pretty bonkers, I wouldn't say they casuallize the game but it's definitely a looser experience, which it's not bad at all, some people prefer that. Btw, if you do get it and but you tend to play often with 2 players only, either get the Duel expansion for the specifically designed 2-player map or print the fanmade one in boardgamegeek which is excellent. The base game really is designed for exactly 4 players.
>>2200 >was originally part of the base game and was cut up by the publishers into an expansion this is probably the first time that a companies greed made the base game better, I only wanted Barrage after hearing about it's cut throat nature, thanks for saving me some money. I'm gonna play it at 3-4 players to get the full friendship destroying experience
>>2124 >What's your favorite board game of all time? How many times has that spot been taken by other games? Paths of Glory. It used to be War of the Ring but while I still love that game the Mt. Doom track is a little anti-climatic. PoG manages to maintain an insane tightrope you have to walk until one side finally buckles. Its sudden and dramatic while also feeling like you could see the cracks slowly form over the course of hours of play.
>>2274 I learned Sekigahara during a board game meetup a couple years ago on a war gaming community's stand on the event, liked it a lot and even stayed at their stand helping them show the game to other people, there was also C&C:A setup on the table next to mine and Paths of Glory's box on the back, I got invited to join their community but have never looked them up to hang out, I probably should, wargames have a bad rep in the general board gaming circle but they are really fun once you get into it.
>>2200 >>2230 My only issue with Barrage is that the companies feel pretty unbalanced. France being extremely good because they have that contract discount while US has some useless energy movement. The expansion company is also pretty bad.
>>2375 >wargames have a bad rep in the general board gaming circle but they are really fun once you get into it. It’s because of the rules. Not even because of them often having an insane number of rules but because of how those rules are written. Wargame rulebooks are technical manuals: perfect reference material but not something you can just pick up and follow step by step to learn the game from. Personally I prefer it that way. You’re always going to have to look rules up for complex games and I’d rather that be easy and the first time learning experience be difficult than the other way around.
>>2436 I think it also has to do with their dry look and that some players are very annoying about liking them, you know the type.
>>2433 The biggest difference in my opinion isn't the companies, but the executives, XOs like Krylov are fantastic to have, whereas the abilities you get unless you really focus on getting them early won't make too much of a difference by the time you unlock them I'd say. >>2436 Definitely the rulebooks have something to do with them but there is also this prejudice to them. Like wargaming grognards, that the games are bland, boring, unbalanced, or that you can't enjoy them unless you are a history buff that loves a very specific point in time that has a game about it. They do feel like this strange beast that most people wouldn't play and the verbose technical rulebook definitely doesn't help but I totally agree with you, I do love me a fine glossary for quick reference. Which wargames would you recommend for changing those stereotypes?
Played Tokaido Deluxe Edition recently. It is interesting as it adds a lot of extra options, but some of the options are pretty dumb I got a character that had a friend/calligraphy special but wound up doing pretty badly because a lot of the calligraphy stuff isn't that great
>>2477 >Which wargames would you recommend for changing those stereotypes? I think really the only requirement is that the game not be a traditional hex and counter IGOUGO procedural system. If it uses cards or blocks in some fashion, then its going to (usually) play more like a crunchy, confrontational game than a history lesson, and if you and your opponent are up for that level of commitment you can have a ton of fun. As for specific games, I'd recommend >Combat Commander >World at War '85 >Paths of Glory >Empire of the Sun >COIN >Washington's War >Churchill >Rommel in the Desert >Fields of Fire (solitaire only) As games I have specifically played and think are great as games in general and not just as wargames. I can go deeper into why if you'd like.
>>2571 Thanks for the recs. Are any of these still in print or fairly PnPable? >I can go deeper into why if you'd like If you don't mind, I'd appreciate it.
>>2635 I’m pretty sure everything except Combat Commander are still in print, and that’s getting a reprint very soon. Can’t help you with PnP though. >If you don't mind, I'd appreciate it. What specifically would you like to know?
>>2690 Tell me more about Rommel in the Desert, it's the closest to Sekigahara I've seen and I really enjoyed the blocks lol. Also have you ever played Maria? I hear it's really good as well.
>>2124 >TQ Tied with Hansa Teutonica and Dune Imperium. I want to say Ra held that spot once, but those two have stayed at the top since the very first time I played them. I got the Ahoy expansion content in the mail yesterday, anybody else get to play it yet? It looks fun
>>2699 You can actually see a lot of Rommel in the Desert's DNA in Sekigahara, especially the emphasis on bluffing over what cards you have. The differences are that the card play is a more straightforward (you either have real fuel cards to do actions with or dummy cards. On the other hand your control over your units is a lot more granular. You can do different orders depending on how much fuel you spend and each unit type has unique movement and combat properties. Combat itself is...old. Bucket of dice system but it was a game designed in the mid 80s. One novel thing is that in combat like units will always attack like first, so tank units shoot at other tanks, infantry at infantry, etc... unless there are no units of the same type in the opposing army. A fairly clean way to encourage combined arms stacks. Other than that its a lot of what you've seen Sekigahara do: block units hide the unit type from your opponent until combat. And if you're interested there's an added bonus where its fully playable for free on Rally the Troops (basically BGA for a select few wargames with a way simpler and better interface). It, Washington's War, and a few of the COIN games are playable on there along with Maria (as well as its predecessor Friedrich) which I have never played.
Does Kabuto Sumo really not have a "fair" pusher with a stopping block, where you can't push a regular piece further then it should (with your finger going over the line between the arena and the pushing platform)? It seems like a pretty game breaking flaw tee bee eych
>>2731 I kinda ignored Ahoy when it came out, it felt like ROOT lite and honestly I'm already fed up with Root after playing it 100+ times, and Ahoy feeling the same (though I could be completely wrong and it may not be, just similar faction asymmetry) never gave it the time of day. I did read around that the game is very dependant on the full player count to be played since other factions will be stronger just from their main "rival" faction not being present. Doesn't the expansion touch up on the matter by adding more factions or mechanics to counteract that? Tell me more about it, maybe I'll give it a go in Tabletop Simulator if possible. >>2753 Rommel sounds pretty interesting, I know of a couple guys that wish there were more buckets of dice on the games we are playing lol, might be a good choice to introduce them and myself to wargames. I've heard of Rally the Troops, I think I attempted long long to play Hammer of the Scots there but never fully got into it, I think sites like those and BGA are not for me, I simply hate the UI and having to confirm everything, tried Food Chain Magnate on onlineboardgamers to check some possible strategies and I simply could not get into it, love to play it on Tabletop Simulator though, the 3D sandbox aspect is a really strong point in its favour.
Apparently 4chan is coming back soon-ish but I must say I've liked it here, despite being a tad too slow, I enjoyed being able to post multiple files, audio on all boards, etc.
Been playing the Metal Gear Solid board game on TTS lately, it's pretty good! It really replicates the video game to a T, it's super clear Emerson Matsuuchi is a real fan of the series, I hope they expand on it or make a sequel with MGS2. Been playing it Solo with only Snake but after I finish I'll most definitely replay it with extra characters and maybe even design my own missions. Have you anons tried it yet?
>>3011 it's fun but difficulty felt inconsistent in the campaign, or maybe i just suck at sneaking when there's no gimmick like "kill everyone" or "haha fuck you boss battle time" involved
