Lancer + Mech TTRPGs Anonymous 04/22/2025 (Tue) 18:47:47 Id: 0c117e No. 2443
This is a thread for the discussion of mech TTRPGs like Lancer and other systems since Battletech is more wargame oriented. Included is the Lancer Core Rules (I would upload the full version instead of the free but it's over fielsize) and a fun little post I found in the 4/tg/ archives since unfortunately the system is eye-rollingly politicized in some places in the lore (thankfully this can simply be homebrewed out or changed). I'm trying to start GMing a game of Lancer soon for a group of mostly normalfag friends who have only played 3.5 and 5e and have never run the system before, does anyone have any advice or fun stuff to do with the system? I think I'll try to run Wallflower (also included) since I've heard good things about it.
>>2443 >does anyone have any advice or fun stuff to do with the system? Keep in mind this is a lot closer to a simplified wargame than a TTRPG in most cases. That and the CompCON does have some rule gaps so you actually need to keep the book open on the side.
>>2461 Yeah, I like that's it's a bit more wargamey than DnD but not as crazy as Battletech while there's also plainly laid out elements of progression and play for pilot oriented stuff. COMP/CON seems pretty cool from what little I've played around with it with the encounter and character builder, but I have been reading through the core book to get the rules and systems down before I actually try to run anything. https://compcon.app/ for anyone interested
Does anyone actually use the canon setting? it feels like Star Trek but more contrived in terms of large scale conflict and tech progression most of the time.
>>2468 i think like most canon settings people just pick & choose what they like out of it.
>>2476 I get that, I'm mostly talking about how do you keep the stuff you like without the whole thing crunbling like a cookie?

Lol, lmao even I'm not sure i would even want to try to salvage this story if this is the first thing your players are supposed to see coming off of a dropship
>>2479 It's pretty easy from what I can tell, you just say that instead of a perfect gommunist space utopia, the Union is a well meaning but bureaucratic nightmare that has gotten much more inefficient and less powerful from the transition to their 3rd committee from the 2nd. Stuff like >>2521 is even easier since you can just change the tranny back to a male (or really change any woman or they/them in a leadership position to a male) and no one will know because the writers with these ideological beliefs can't make men and women actually different with varying motivations and inherent ideals because of the current socio-political zeitgeist.
>>2443 i tried running a one shot for steel hearts a few years ago, srw chibi styled mecha ttrpg with a unique setting mostly on future earth and some really goofy stuff with lots of homages to classic /m/echa anime. shame the last update was 2023. https://sandroad.itch.io/steel-hearts
>>2521 The one time my group did Lancer we used my own setting and ignored the commie setting in the book. That said, as far as I can recall that was before they started putting actual trannies in there. I probably would have refused to play if I saw that. It’s a shame, the engine is pretty decent. Someone should rip it off and sell it with a setting and art style by people who actually like anime.
I'll be polite about it here because this is a nice board, but Lancer is just an extended piece of communist propaganda made out of DnD structured out of scifi technobabble from destiny. The rest is barely concealed disinterest with mecha media and missing mechanics covered over with "just homerule it!". The whole thing is designed around the handwaves provided by working for the big gay all powerful government like free downtime repairs or the entire leveling system, so it all falls apart if you want to play as independent mercenaries or something. The game didn't even have money until like, it's 3rd expansion. There's a reason it could never support its own threads properly but also wasn't welcomed in the mecha general. Lancer is what it looks like when someone wears that thing you like as a skin suit.
>>2479 well it depends on what you're trying to excise and what your campaign is actually directly touching on. all the tangential crap in the rulebook isn't really relevant to the pseudo-wargame parts. when i ran lancer i just set it in the astragius galaxy
>>2521 this art is horrendous I hate it
>>2722 You can sus out the politics and beliefs of the creators pretty easily based on the art alone, it's definitely that Tumblr kind of style.

>Lancer + Mech TTRPGs >no Mecha Monday thread off to a great fucking start, fucking lancerfags i swear to god
>>2524 >the writers with these ideological beliefs can't make men and women actually different with varying motivations and inherent ideals Lmao. This is some deeply virginal chud shit that reminds me of Billy Lind's Victoria novel. Tell me how differently the Falklands would have played out with male Thatcher. What are the broads supposed to do, rage out with PMS and then cry when their missile strike hurts a bunny rabbit? Men are supposed to ultra-stoic cool guys who aren't affected by anything? Get a job, dork.

Oh, I was wondering when one of these threads would show up. Get yourself a real mecha game nerd.

>>2461 >Keep in mind this is a lot closer to a simplified wargame than a TTRPG in most cases. 100% this. Lancer should've been a Wargame rather than an RPG. A buddy of mine have workshopped ideas on playing an IRL lancer game and between the logistics of actually getting enough tokens, templates and minis to play plus playing without COMPCON or the Forge module, it feels like it would be AIDs to run on a table. That being said, Lancer is fun if you ignore the bullshit and just do your own thing with your friends. There is some house ruling you'll have to do to iron out the experience but it still is a fun game when played casually online. Some houserules we use in my group are: >Drones are Characters, full stop. With 0's in all stats when rolling saves or making checks. >Pilots take double damage from mech weapondry. Also it doesn't help that Masstif Press are massive faggots that can't help but inject their personal politics into whatever they're doing at the moment. Their discord mods are even worse from the stuff I've seen. >>2468 In my group we just play on the Long Rim and ignore the core. Glory to Harrison Armory!!
>>2762 >the last image Took you long enough to figure that out, huh? I think the art in the original book's release should have tipped you off sooner, because it looks like every other shitty leftist comic. Seriously, the art is really funny. I flipped through the PDF again of the core book and I couldn't find a single white man or a normal looking person until page 179. Every other woman happens to have a nose ring too.

>>2762 I got the same read on the rules. Total ass to run pen and paper. But, apparently there’s a guy trying to do for Lancer what Baldur’s Gate did for DnD. It’s called Lancer Tactics. It doesn’t have everything but apparently it has the basics.
