Like this anon said, these games were aimed at kids with a ton of disposable time on their hands. If you judge them with an adult mindset, you're just gonna end up bitter. You were never the target audience to begin with. Compared to modern games that feel like a goddamn chore, packed with a million side quests and pointless objectives only there to extend the game's length to an 80+ hour slog, those old 20 to 40 hour JRPGs really aren't that bad. If you can't get into the right headspace or stay open to having fun with a game like you did as a kid, then either gaming isn't for you anymore, or JRPGs just aren't your thing
On that note, I don’t think I ever finished an RPG twice as a kid. I replayed them later on, sure, but once I was done, I just moved on to the next game. No way I’d sit through another 40 hours of the same thing just for a different ending.

Old marketing was tied to old gaming. Both were better because they were made by talented individuals passionate about their craft.
