Tales of Thread Anonymous 04/18/2025 (Fri) 19:41:52 Id: b2239a No. 1135594
Here we discuss Tales of Series video games. Starting from Tales of Phantasia to Tales of Arise. Didnt feel it was /vg/ worthy since this series isnt popular enough. At least not anymore.
Sucks to see this place dead. A new leak happened. A YT live promoting what seems to be a Tales of Xilia 1 remaster was accidentally made public for a few minutes some days ago. The stream was scheduled to air today at 9:45 AM EST, so in 2 hours and 17 minutes from now.
>>1668923 Meh, I'm not the biggest fan of that game tbh.
>buy tales of arise on a sale >starts up game >Cash Shop menu is more prominent than the options menu >It's also on the main menu in-game too >IT'S ALSO ON THE CAMP MENU i refunded right after realizing the cash shop menu is basically on every single menu in the game, it broke the immersion so hard i couldn't even care about the game anymore.
>>1669477 Understandable.
>>1669477 You can always pirate your games, anon. Anyway, you're not missing much. The game’s predictable from start to finish. You can pretty much guess who’s gonna backstab you or die just based on their design. It’s packed with basic anime cliches, and even on hard mode, the game’s piss easy. I still don’t get why a game that supposedly sold so well never got a sequel or new entry.
>>1669645 I don't think pirating would help the game unless it removes the cash shop entirely.
>>1669645 Capcom's sales data is open enough that we've seen Dragon's Dogma 2 had a strong first month (possibly even week), then sales fell into the toilet (they dropped the game to 50% off on Steam and only got ~100,000 sales for that quarter when the original Dragon's Dogma sold 100,000 on Switch alone in the same quarter). Franchise games regularly sell off the quality of the previous entry (see Battle Network 4 to continue the Capcom comparison) and modern games take forever to make now. The nature of digital allowing for unlimited sales at any time, and modern games being really expensive to make crap also means that making old games run on modern hardware is low risk for the potential decades of sales on essentially auto-pilot. If two years after release almost any game is going to be selling 100,000 copies a quarter at 75% off, why put hundreds of millions into a new game (which a lot of the market doesn't have hardware for) when you can spend just a few million (going to vary by codebase, graphics changes, and how many extras you want to put in) porting a game you already know is "good enough" and get essentially the same post-launch sales (potentially better as weaker machines can run it fine) at a fraction of the price. You really go really go out of your way to fuck these up (see Baten Kaitos) for them to not sell. These re-releases can also add translations (I'm fairly sure the Chinese translations and Russian translation for Graces f are new, and think the Korean one may be as well. Not impossible for at least one of the European languages to be new either) and sell them to what are now pretty big markets where it's essentially a new game in that region.

>>1205388 Summon Night 6. Swordcraft 3, never ever. >>1317939 >Vesteria >>1351656 When Bamco wants more nostalgia bucks. >>1669477 Bamco really is the EA of Japan but instead of eating up cherished companies and start producing shit, it eats up cherished animes and starts producing shit (unless it's like SAO, where it's just adding to a turd).>>1669831 >Dragon's Dogma 2 had a strong first month (possibly even week), then sales fell into the toilet (they dropped the game to 50% off on Steam and only got ~100,000 sales for that quarter when the original Dragon's Dogma sold 100,000 on Switch alone in the same quarter). It's nice to see that raping they did to Dragons Dogma, didn't do them any favors. IP's likely gone the same way as Lost Planet; death by the most retarded western pandering.
>>1668923 It was the most realistic choice, really. It and Xillia 2 are still locked to the PS3. Zestiria's crossplay, so its PS4 version can be played on PS5 Berseria does have a Japan only PS3 release, and the PS4 release, too, is playable on PS5. Arise is contemporary Vesperia's not on current gen consoles but BC makes it playable Graces F R released this year. Symphonia has like a trillion ports already So Xillia. Abyss, Legendia and the 2D games are probably coming later, if ever. I guess the Vita remakes were also a plausible option.
>>1670713 >crossplay I meant crossgen. iirc the PS4 version was made specifically for the Western release. could be misremembering though.

>>1670713 >Vesperia's not on current gen consoles but BC makes it playable The definitive edition is so mishandled that Steam and Switch are lost to memory? >Symphonia has like a trillion ports already Needs more if it hopes to overtake Resident Evil 4 and Skyrim.
>>1670742 Symphonia DESPERATELY needs a port that runs at 60 fps. It kills me every time I see them porting alterations to the ps2 version.
>>1670713 Phantasia PSP is an option. High quality sprites on a 3D field, and you get the bonus that almost nobody has played Narikiri Dungeon. It's also an excuse for them to translate Phantasia again.
>>1670713 i really want a abyss port on PC. also a port of Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2, but that's like wishing for a PC port of Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity, it's not going to happen, ever.
>>1670742 Honestly the Switch made generational conventions confusing to me, since Nintendo just released their tablets mid gen. But like I meant the Switch 2 can play Switch games,so it can play Vesperia. PS5 and Series can also play their predecessors' games, so yeah. I will admit I was mostly console focused in my post, so yeah I kinda forgot about the PC version. >>1671079 Isn't that Phantasia X? That was the second PSP port >Narikiri Dungeon I'm sure ND X is VERY Different from the OG GBC game Also, while I'm happy Xillia is finally getting freed from its PS3 shackles, it's disappointing we're not getting a double pack with 2. But hey $$$

>>1675845 I tip my fedora to you. If anyone want an undubbed version, I have that and I don't mind uploading it. Also I don't understand. Why the fuck just the first game? I know >>1673439 said < it's disappointing we're not getting a double pack with 2. But hey $$$ Which yeah, sure, it's more money, but almost no one will buy this piece of shit 4/10 game if it's more than like 10-15 bucks. Both games would have at least prompted people to put 40-50 bucks in and see it as good value. Instead all you guys will get is the fucking tech demo. And it's even more censored for some retarded reason. Yeah, don't buy this shit, pirate it at most. Also intense sex with both lolis up there to knock them up
>>1675845 Is anyone really surprised? Pretty much every "re release" gets censored in some way, shape, or form. If you want to enjoy these games, just emulate them. This industry doesn’t deserve your time or money.
>>1675845 I lack the supercomputer required to emulate this (assuming that's what this is as you sure as hell didn't elaborate), but I thank you on behalf of those that can.
>>1675845 Thanks anon. Do you happen to have the jp version as well? As in, japanese text/interface.
>>1350832 You mean how the developers had a more interesting premise in the first game involving sci-fi and space for the first 1% of the game but then their Japanese genes kicked in and they immediately abandoned it for a traditional and forgettable generic fantasy plot until the last 1% of the game? I don't even remember any of the non-scifi parts of the plot, it was so forgettable.
>>1827039 Star Ocean was literaly made by ex Phantasia devs.
>>1827046 I played them back to back a few years ago. The original SFC version of SO 1 even uses some of the same menus and sound effects as Phantasia.
>>1827110 SFX of that era were often from sound libraries or incredibly simple (e.g., Doom's item pick up is actually an incredibly basic from scratch sound) so I'd think something like menu sounds is just same people picking what to use for both rather than an actual copying.
I wanna get into this series but i only have a PC. Which game should i start from and which games should i play in order?
>>1827859 Most of them aren't linked together plot wise, so you'd be fine starting at any point. I'd start with the snes version of Phantasia with the Dejap TL. It's old, it's basic, you'll hate the AI for being dumb as a rock but the story is still solid and the gameplay is fun. It's also not complicated nor very long, so you'll never really need a guide if you have even a smidge of patience. And you'll know if you like the 2d games and want to keep going in order. If that fails or if all you want is to experience the 3d era, go with Grace F or Berseria. They're both flawed and grace has a really, really terrible shounen story but they're also the best 3d entries gameplay wise. Just... Never expect good stories or good dungeons going in any of the "tales" games.
>>1827968 Why not the psp version of Phantasia? From what I heard it's more or less a 1:1 port, but with voice-acting, and it also has a translation patch. >Never expect good stories Maybe the stories are not high literature, but I am playing through Destiny Director's Cut and enjoying the story and characters. The story might be just "shounen tier", but I like the overall optimistic and light-heated story. >>1827859 Like the other anon has said, the games aren't inter-connected, with exceptions of direct sequels, like Destiny 2. I guess if you want the best version of the 2D combat, I heard Abyss is the best one, as it was a culmination of all the lessons they had learned from the previous PS2/Gamecube era games, but haven't played it yet to confirm.
>>1828003 Abyss is kinda 2D in the same vein that symphonia would be. Main fighting is a 2d grid but you also get 3d free run and dash attacks. (With crit stunlocks if you get hit while you freerun.) I do only recommend the stuff I've personally played and I never tried that psp port, so that's why I said the snes version. (I also tried the ps1 version but I found that to be just a worse experience overall.) Also I said grace was shounen tier, not the others. While the old 2d game usually had better stories, they were still pretty basic. Destiny has a lot of pacing issues and unexplained important stuff but it's still enjoyable even if the MC is retard tier.
>>1828053 >I do only recommend the stuff I've personally played Fair enough. >I said grace was shounen tier, not the others When I called Destiny's story shounen tier, it was just my personal assessment, not a counter argument. I was more going for a "even though the stories aren't great, they can still be enjoyable" which I think we both agree on. >even if the MC is retard tier I should preface by saying that I am playing the JP version, and I am not fluent, so some things might go over my head. Personally I enjoy the MC, yes he is a bit of a retard, but he fits right in with the story, maybe because it's from his perspective. I like how he clashes with some of the other characters like his sword, such as that one scene in the beginning, when he says something akin to "Whoah, I have a talking sword, it's like I am one of those Legendary Heroes", to which the swords retorts and calls him a dumbass. Plus he does mature a bit as he travels around the world, so it's not all that bad.

I know there are controversies with the Xillia censorship, so I have to ask if Vesperia also had the same problems, or if the Definitive Edition is just the PS3 version but with better graphics? I tried searching online, and couldn't find anything, which is a good sign, but I just want to be sure.
>>1872648 Xillia was the first one to censor things in a remake. Vesperia DE is just the PS3 version with slightly better textures and all the costume dlc bundled in. Same with the Graces F remaster.
>>1872910 Thanks for the info anon.
>>1872648 >>1872910 Vesperia PC is missing some licensed costumes. Apparently mods can restore them though.
>>1872910 >Same with the Graces F remaster. That one is missing some DLC costumes, though. I think the Code Geass, Miku and im@s outfits arent in it.
