Breath of Fire IV Anonymous 04/25/2025 (Fri) 10:34:26 Id: 9772c8 No. 1252820
Just released on GOG
>>1258323 I didn't really think it was that big of a deal. I just used it for bosses on my playthrough and I beat it by basically going: >"exploratory" run to the next save point >reset >"real" run to the next save point >rinse and repeat to the end of the game
>>1258484 Exactly, a clever player would slow down a minute and think about the weird loop system and how to use it to their advantage. It makes sense why a lot of players would approach it like a traditional jrpg and get frustrated, cause playing these games is typically automatic, grindy, and doesn't require strategy. And there's nothing else like DQ.with this,,, roguelite (maybe?) system that's tied into the narrative, from which you could infer that it's going to be a part of the narrative at some point rather than a simple gameplay mechanic that only serves as a super ability with drawbacks. The solution to my experience in particular would have been testing the limits of the dragon transformation early in the game and knowing what all of its abilities do, rather than assuming everything I'll need to know at the end would come naturally.
>>1252820 I emulated It years ago
>>1258548 Same, around 2020. The final boss hits like a truck if you are under leveled/ haven't done any side-quest. Ershin is easily MVP. Do you see the grill or the red triangle as ershin's mouth?
>>1252820 Is there a reason to play this over emulating the PS1 version ?
>>1259201 DO play the PS1 version.

>>1259201 with the emulator you get shaders, savestates and easy speedups
I know the game is pretty but all these BoF games are pretty mid and not really worth the time they take to play when there are much better Jrpg's out there, like FF or Suikoden. And I say this as someone who has played BoF1-5, none are very good.
>>1259214 >>1259254 Alright bros thanks for clarifying
>>1259314 I always thought they were pretty good, certainly above par-- though I really took to 5, probably because I couldn't figure out the aptly named SOL system. This was a long time ago, and my only memories aside from 5 were catching whales in the fishing game. I do hope to play remastered BOFDQ on PC one day, alongside Unlimited Saga, Parasite Eves, KUF Circle of Doom and all the other things that will never ever happen. But, SaGa Frontier got a new coat of paint so my hope to cope ratio fluctuates accordingly.
>>1259314 i think bof3 and 4 are better than final fantasies outside of tactics, 7, 8 and 10
>>1259314 JRPGs are a mid genre. On the PS1 they're all about the same length, the same difficulty, same progression, same strategy. For what it's worth, when I finally tried Suikoden 1 it sucked balls.
>>1259314 >says BoF is "mid" >recommends Suikoden I don't necessarily disagree with you. Breath of Fire 1 and 2 are "mid" even for their consoles. Breath of Fire 3 and 4 are at least "high mid" for their consoles. Dragon Quarter is also at least "high mid" for its console, but is a somewhat different genre so may not be strictly comparable. Suikoden, however, sucks. Cast bloat is a cancer and ruins any game it infects.
>>1259557 Honestly, balls are pretty good for sucking. If you want to say something is really bad, say it's like sucking an elbow.
>>1259425 We will absolutely 100% get an Unlimited SaGa re-release.
>>1259314 Half the FF and Suikoden games are bad though. Hell only Suikoden 2 and 5 are worth anything and they are still just good games, not great.

How did they manage to make it look worse. If they'd just left it alone it would have looked perfect. I also can't believe they're keeping the old localization. Even besides the censorship there's a point halfway through the game where you get cucked by Cray out of nowhere because of a mistranslation.
Why can't modern devs use colors so well like in this game?
>>1258484 >>"exploratory" run to the next save point >>reset >"real" run to the next save point well that's the crux of the complaints. trial and error and duplicate effort are huge no-nos in modern game development. I'm guessing it comes from the idea that savescumming is bad (saves are supposed to suspend play, not let you 'cheat' by looking into the future), and no one likes unwinnable scenarios (how was I supposed to know I shouldn't have done that 5 hours ago). and don't forget that the game penalizes your rank for saving (quicksaves aside) >>1258539 >It makes sense why a lot of players would approach it like a traditional jrpg and get frustrated because most people are dumb and only approach and judge things based on what they know, so if their existent knowledge is ineffective then it must be the game's fault! I'm not trying to say the game is an uncelebrated masterpiece or anything, just that everyone is all too quick to judge and write off things
>>1259104 Neither, but I'm seeing them at the same time now thanks to you anon. I hate it.
Capcom sleeping on re psx and bof remasters will always be a mystery for me
>>1265992 >tfw you will never see deis naked in full 3d
>>1265992 >>1266419 There's no way whatsoever that modern gaming would allow naked Deis. It's a shame that we were relegated to the darkest timeline.
>>1265992 I really wanted a remake of the first 2 Breath of Fire games that expands on the village customization mechanic and a remaster of 3 and 4. But I'm disappointed that this remaster didn't add the stuff they had to cut from 4 due to crunch time. I wish they remastered games that added the original vision of devs new that they have more time, Xenogears and Digital Devil Saga would benefit greatly from it.
>>1266627 I don't know if you're aware or if it's anything like what you're meaning, but there is a Breath of Fire 2 fangame that adds a bunch of stuff like a skill tree https://knightmarish-games.itch.io/breath-of-fire-awakening-fan-game He's apparently working on a 2.5D "HD Remaster" version of this too.
>>1266700 I wasn't aware, this is awesome thanks
>>1259314 Suikoden is boring as shit. JRPG gameplay is almost always boring but they sometimes make up with it with interesting settings and stories, Suikoden's is just completely generic.
>>1252820 One the biggest flawed masterpieces because they ran out of time developing the game. You never get to kill that fagget

>still PTSD'd by the boss encounters after renting at Blockuster two decades ago I JUST WANNA FISH
>>1260402 >you get cucked by Cray out of nowhere because of a mistranslation. Is it when Nina says "I think I am in love with Cray?"
(41.38 KB 320x240 bof7mockup1x1.png)

If Capcom decides to go for the remake option, I'd like them to use BoFIV's graphics and gameplay to improve Bof I & Bof II.
>>1301060 >Has the coolest Ryu >Has the hottest Nina. Breath of Fire II is so underrated.
>>1301060 >I'd like them to use BoFIV's graphics pixels don't scale to 1920x1080, let alone 4k. snk went bankrupt twice over it
>>1260402 >>1300973 Is it fixed in the various uncensor versions of the game for the ps1? Or has anyone ever fixed it? How can you even mistranslate "I think i am in love with Cray"?
