Breath of Fire IV Anonymous 04/25/2025 (Fri) 10:34:26 Id: 9772c8 No. 1252820
Just released on GOG
>random encounters No thanks
>>1252820 10 bucks? I might do. I have no idea if the restorations are things that bothered me. I never beat the horseman superboss
HOLD ON JUST A SECOND They don't mention if the censored parts from the NA version are present. Wtf? Are they retarded?
>>1252820 Hey, that's cool.
Is it upscaled?
>>1252820 Neat that they included some improvements. Ive already played the PC version but Ill support it in hopes they do some more.
Shame it's also the worst one despite being the best looking
>>1252820 Beautiful looking game, but goddamn did I not like it. Ryu constantly was treated like a side character by the catman with a corndog for a weapon. In the end I sided with the silver haired guy, seemed like the right thing to do. >>1253153 Out of curiosity what exactly was censored? >>1253334 So many people claim to like this game and I just don't see it at all. It felt like Ryu had the least amount of agency of any game. It kind of reminds me of FF12 and everyone talks around you and you are just along for the ride, was not a fan.
>>1252820 I've seen the so-called improvements and they didn't mention anything regarding the censorship. The superior version is still PS1 with uncensored patch.
>>1253359 >Out of curiosity what exactly was censored? partial nudity and reference to alcohol, there's an infamous fanservice moment where the girls are bathing in a pond that was never in the na version
>>1252820 That's weird but I'm going to buy it. Was 4 the really bad one? >>1253359 >>1253153 It's fine, it'll get fixed anyway.
>>1253381 I don't think even titties could've saved this one. It's a real shame capcom just let it die, but I guess it never sold like FF or DQ did for Squaresoft. Last thing I had heard was a browser game was made with a red haired protagonist and it was set in the BoF universe. There is also a fanmade project being slowly developed called Tears of Mana iirc, but it's got some of that diversity that games made in current year like to add.
>>1253381 Don't forget the emperor beheading scene.
>>1253407 >Was 4 the really bad one? No it's not, don't listen to these morons.
>>1253407 >Was 4 the really bad one? i don't think so? i mean, i liked it
>>1253407 >Was 4 the really bad one? I thought that people didn't like Dragon Quarter, never knew people didn't like 4. Especially with all of the hype behind the uncensored patch from a couple of years ago.
>>1253419 >>1253421 I must be thinking of one of the later spinoffs or something. I played 1, 2, and 3 >>1253448 I remember people not liking the completion aspect of dragon quarter.
Dragon Quarter made people rage, because you could easily brick your save. It also likely killed the series. 4 was a miss for me, didn't like how Ryu was just a mute cuck along for the ride. I guess if you dissect the story he is kind of retarded. Some people really like it though and that's fine.
>>1253359 Ursula taking her pants off, the beheading of the current emperor by fou-lu, a bath scene that, irc, wasn't even shown(black screen).only the chara portraits were nude.
>>1253502 >because you could easily brick your save I thought you could NG+ DQ any time you wanted, and that was an intentional feature.
>>1253604 I remember the EU Version was different in that case. There was no NG+
(277.20 KB 954x735 bof4.png)

i replayed it in japanese last year. i feel like emulation is actually better for me these days since i can easily take screenshots, save state and go back whenever i need to (mostly for the sake of stopping playing whenever but sometimes to reread something etc). i'm actually gonna play tales of vesperia soon and despite owning it on steam, i'm gonna emulate the ps3 version i feel like if they uncensored this, people who really like the game might buy it but otherwise it doesn't make much sense to me

>>1253572 i don't remember ursula taking her pants off. there was a section in the boat where the girls have to stay alone and fend off some cockroaches and whatnot. i don't know if that part was censored, but i *think* the dialogue was heavily changed. i played the original like over 20 years ago and didn't beat it and didn't retain most of it though so i could be wrong also the batch scene is so tame, it's really stupid they censored that. even the beheading. i guess whoever was (((localizing))) this game at the time was really retarded/pozzed
>>1253619 >There was no NG+ I'm going to say that's not possible, as the whole game is built around NG+. You aren't even intended to properly finish the game the first time around.
>>1252820 Did it add some new content or is it just a re-release with QOL? I heard that this game had to rush some things from its story due to not enough devtime
>>1252820 did they fix the slow loadtimes? that's the only reason I never finished the PS1 version
>>1253407 Haven't played it yet, only played the first two and some of the third game which had to pause due to being fatigued after playing so many turn based RPGs in a row. The general consensus I've seen >Breath of Fire is good but very simple >Breath of Fire 2, 3 and 4 are really great. However some stuff in 2 is obtuse, 3 is kind of slow and 4 is kind of rushed near the end >Dragon Quarter is worse than the previous 4 due to being too clunky and difficult but still has some merits, would benefit from a re-release >Breath of Fire 5 is severely shit and most people pretend it doesn't exist, including Capcom Overall this series beloved and most would recommend the first 4 games. It's great that I haven't played 4 yet, hopefully by the time I beat 3 someone had already made an uncensored patch for 4.

>>1254242 Seems to be a pretty basic port
>>1252820 >Just released on GOG Is it any different than the old PC version? Or is it just that same version released on GOG? Pretty cool regardless, that means Capcom hasn't completely forgotten about BoF, plus Fou-Lu was a boss in SFV, right? However, if it's just a port, then it's kinda meh since you could already pirate the PC version. It will only truly mean something if they port something like BoF3 which was never on PC. I think a Steam bundle of all 5 games would be super kino. >>1253407 >Was 4 the really bad one? You're probably referring to Dragon Quarter (5), but Dragon Quarter is not actually bad. It's a very good game, and imo it has held up the best of all the BoF games in modern times, because honestly even the best games (3 and 4) are very very slowly paced in modern times. Anyway, DQ is remembered poorly because 1) it's "not Breath of Fire" meaning it's not 3 niggaz in a row and the whole vibe is different, and 2) it's a roguelite RPG back before roguelites were so ubiquitous, so people weren't yet used to the idea of "losing" progress to gain incremental progress. >>1254242 >>2 localizations of the game included (English and Japanese). Is this truly "localizations", as in you can choose whether or not Ursula drops her pants or Ryu gropes her or Fou-Lu decapitates the emperor, or does this only refer to the language? Did we ever get confirmation whether or not it's "uncensored"?
>>1254392 when does she drop her pants? i don't remember that. is it when she gets captured by the party? i think i remember ryu groping her but i don't remember exactly when
>>1254549 >when does she drop her pants? It's not a big deal, it's like way less of a big deal than Deis being naked in 3, but she just quickly drops them for the pirates. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IE3U3FV1Fs
>>1252820 >Slow burn >boring combat where you only mash A >weird story and weird characters >weird music It's alright, one of those games that you try when you run out of RPGs to play
(331.47 KB 946x704 1745594032.png)

>>1252820 At last! I knew that voting for it on the dreamlist thing would be worth it! It having had an official PC version that just wasn't officially available anywhere must have meant that its chances were pretty good. That said. I was just expecting them to just make sure that the game was compatible with modern Windows. I wasn't expecting all of picture related. Rad.
>>1252820 eh 4 is OK but 3 is the real gem
>>1254785 Yes, but 4 has the aesthetics, it's just a shame that the series never had a release past this game. Never.
I will not pay $10 for BoF4. Call me when I can give Capcom $50 for Dragon Quarter instead (I am NOT kidding).
>>1252820 nice. here's hoping digimon world also gets its pc port updated and fixed to be at least as good as the ps1 version >>1253407 the one that split the fanbase in half was dragon quarter. everyone wonders why they called it breath of fire. it's as absurd as capcom releasing a restaurant management game with under the resident evil name >>1253502 >easily brick your save that's literally impossible thanks to the ability to start a NG+ anytime >inb4 restarts bad that's not the problem. it just suffers from the same issue inherent to all games with resource management: fuckups snowball. frontloaded difficulty which is at its highest when you begin, then plummets as you learn >>1254392 >that uuuuuoooooohh pic funny seeing that again after all those years
very based thanks for the heads up op
I do hope the other games come to PC. 3 was my favorite. >>1253789 iirc, wasn't Scias in the Jp version drunk all the time? In the NA version, he had a stuttering problem, which I always though was weird.
>>1254581 huh, i don't remember that part. i'm sure i must've seen it and forgotten about it. i vaguely remember ryu groping her >>1258136 yeah, he had a drinking problem
>>1256189 >that's literally impossible thanks to the ability to start a NG+ anytime He's probably referring to the dragon meter forcing restarts. I can see how it would be frustrating, go through a whole loop and not be able to win because you didn't know how the dragon meter has to be used at the end. For anyone who doesn't know, in order to beat the game you must be at the final boss with a certain % of meter left in order to finish him, but you wouldn't know this. It's plain trial and error, because the other wrinkle is that the last half dozen bosses or so more or less require you to use the dragon transformation to defeat them due to them having damage threshold shields which refresh every turn. You have to deal a certain amount of damage every turn, and only damage above that number will count - every turn. When I played I beat a couple of those bosses without transforming because I felt like I had to hoard the dragon meter in case something happens like hoarding elixirs. And then this backfired on me because I didn't clue in that I HAD to use it on the final boss lol. If it wasn't for save states I would've had to learn that, then play through the game again. Emulation saved me like 15+ hours or something.

>>1258230 oh huh, i actually forgot about it. he says they can't ride the boat, says "can you show us your butt" and she does it and says "so is it ok if i show you my butt"? i watched the clip for the grope, you actually see his fingers move after he places it on her chest lol. i didn't remember that as i played it, i guess i was paying too much attention to the text
>>1258323 I didn't really think it was that big of a deal. I just used it for bosses on my playthrough and I beat it by basically going: >"exploratory" run to the next save point >reset >"real" run to the next save point >rinse and repeat to the end of the game
>>1258484 Exactly, a clever player would slow down a minute and think about the weird loop system and how to use it to their advantage. It makes sense why a lot of players would approach it like a traditional jrpg and get frustrated, cause playing these games is typically automatic, grindy, and doesn't require strategy. And there's nothing else like DQ.with this,,, roguelite (maybe?) system that's tied into the narrative, from which you could infer that it's going to be a part of the narrative at some point rather than a simple gameplay mechanic that only serves as a super ability with drawbacks. The solution to my experience in particular would have been testing the limits of the dragon transformation early in the game and knowing what all of its abilities do, rather than assuming everything I'll need to know at the end would come naturally.
>>1252820 I emulated It years ago
>>1258548 Same, around 2020. The final boss hits like a truck if you are under leveled/ haven't done any side-quest. Ershin is easily MVP. Do you see the grill or the red triangle as ershin's mouth?
>>1252820 Is there a reason to play this over emulating the PS1 version ?
>>1259201 DO play the PS1 version.
(122.47 KB 812x598 gog version.jpg)

>>1259201 with the emulator you get shaders, savestates and easy speedups
I know the game is pretty but all these BoF games are pretty mid and not really worth the time they take to play when there are much better Jrpg's out there, like FF or Suikoden. And I say this as someone who has played BoF1-5, none are very good.
>>1259214 >>1259254 Alright bros thanks for clarifying
>>1259314 I always thought they were pretty good, certainly above par-- though I really took to 5, probably because I couldn't figure out the aptly named SOL system. This was a long time ago, and my only memories aside from 5 were catching whales in the fishing game. I do hope to play remastered BOFDQ on PC one day, alongside Unlimited Saga, Parasite Eves, KUF Circle of Doom and all the other things that will never ever happen. But, SaGa Frontier got a new coat of paint so my hope to cope ratio fluctuates accordingly.
>>1259314 i think bof3 and 4 are better than final fantasies outside of tactics, 7, 8 and 10
>>1259314 JRPGs are a mid genre. On the PS1 they're all about the same length, the same difficulty, same progression, same strategy. For what it's worth, when I finally tried Suikoden 1 it sucked balls.
>>1259314 >says BoF is "mid" >recommends Suikoden I don't necessarily disagree with you. Breath of Fire 1 and 2 are "mid" even for their consoles. Breath of Fire 3 and 4 are at least "high mid" for their consoles. Dragon Quarter is also at least "high mid" for its console, but is a somewhat different genre so may not be strictly comparable. Suikoden, however, sucks. Cast bloat is a cancer and ruins any game it infects.
>>1259557 Honestly, balls are pretty good for sucking. If you want to say something is really bad, say it's like sucking an elbow.
>>1259425 We will absolutely 100% get an Unlimited SaGa re-release.
>>1259314 Half the FF and Suikoden games are bad though. Hell only Suikoden 2 and 5 are worth anything and they are still just good games, not great.
(2.43 MB 3456x2234 BOFIV original.png)

(520.68 KB 3840x2160 bofIV remaster.jpg)

How did they manage to make it look worse. If they'd just left it alone it would have looked perfect. I also can't believe they're keeping the old localization. Even besides the censorship there's a point halfway through the game where you get cucked by Cray out of nowhere because of a mistranslation.
Why can't modern devs use colors so well like in this game?
>>1258484 >>"exploratory" run to the next save point >>reset >"real" run to the next save point well that's the crux of the complaints. trial and error and duplicate effort are huge no-nos in modern game development. I'm guessing it comes from the idea that savescumming is bad (saves are supposed to suspend play, not let you 'cheat' by looking into the future), and no one likes unwinnable scenarios (how was I supposed to know I shouldn't have done that 5 hours ago). and don't forget that the game penalizes your rank for saving (quicksaves aside) >>1258539 >It makes sense why a lot of players would approach it like a traditional jrpg and get frustrated because most people are dumb and only approach and judge things based on what they know, so if their existent knowledge is ineffective then it must be the game's fault! I'm not trying to say the game is an uncelebrated masterpiece or anything, just that everyone is all too quick to judge and write off things
>>1259104 Neither, but I'm seeing them at the same time now thanks to you anon. I hate it.
Capcom sleeping on re psx and bof remasters will always be a mystery for me
>>1265992 >tfw you will never see deis naked in full 3d
>>1265992 >>1266419 There's no way whatsoever that modern gaming would allow naked Deis. It's a shame that we were relegated to the darkest timeline.
>>1265992 I really wanted a remake of the first 2 Breath of Fire games that expands on the village customization mechanic and a remaster of 3 and 4. But I'm disappointed that this remaster didn't add the stuff they had to cut from 4 due to crunch time. I wish they remastered games that added the original vision of devs new that they have more time, Xenogears and Digital Devil Saga would benefit greatly from it.
>>1266627 I don't know if you're aware or if it's anything like what you're meaning, but there is a Breath of Fire 2 fangame that adds a bunch of stuff like a skill tree https://knightmarish-games.itch.io/breath-of-fire-awakening-fan-game He's apparently working on a 2.5D "HD Remaster" version of this too.
>>1266700 I wasn't aware, this is awesome thanks
>>1259314 Suikoden is boring as shit. JRPG gameplay is almost always boring but they sometimes make up with it with interesting settings and stories, Suikoden's is just completely generic.
>>1252820 One the biggest flawed masterpieces because they ran out of time developing the game. You never get to kill that fagget
(25.72 KB 736x981 1740611180188830.jpg)

>still PTSD'd by the boss encounters after renting at Blockuster two decades ago I JUST WANNA FISH
>>1260402 >you get cucked by Cray out of nowhere because of a mistranslation. Is it when Nina says "I think I am in love with Cray?"
(41.38 KB 320x240 bof7mockup1x1.png)

If Capcom decides to go for the remake option, I'd like them to use BoFIV's graphics and gameplay to improve Bof I & Bof II.
>>1301060 >Has the coolest Ryu >Has the hottest Nina. Breath of Fire II is so underrated.
>>1301060 >I'd like them to use BoFIV's graphics pixels don't scale to 1920x1080, let alone 4k. snk went bankrupt twice over it
>>1260402 >>1300973 Is it fixed in the various uncensor versions of the game for the ps1? Or has anyone ever fixed it? How can you even mistranslate "I think i am in love with Cray"?
