Yakuza Thread Anonymous 09/14/2025 (Sun) 02:25:18 Id: 29298d No. 1750825
I had been wanting to get into the Yakuza series for awhile, but didn't know where to start, so I got a used copy of the remastered collection. I just started playing Yakuza 3. It feels like it's taking forever to actually get started, but I'm interested to see where everything goes. It seems like it could be really fun once things finally get going. However, I later found out a lot of people consider it the worst game in the series, and that makes me wonder if I should even keep playing it. Some say to skip the first five games altogether, while others say everything after Yakuza 5 is fake nu-Yakuza, especially the remakes or 1 and 2. Who is telling the truth? Also, general Yakuza thread.
>>1760837 Who do you think paid a pretty penny to write those journoshill articles?

>>1759161 >>1758480 You guys talking about PS2 emulation being on a weird spot... my Intel Integrated HD Graphics, 8GB RAM, potato ass PC can run Bully, God Hand, DQV and Yakuza flawlessly, so I dont know what to tell you. (It cant, however, run Metroid Prime 2 properly and has a seizure with TTYD, so there is that lmao).
>>1760906 The graphics chip does not matter that much unless you want to play with fancy stuff like crt scanline filters, filtering or supersampling, in fact current day integrated graphics can run most games for only 300 bucks
>>1750825 I don't understand peole asking where to start in a series when a series isn't even that old or as expansive as other games. It's one thing when you have Metal Gear, Mario or Zelda which now are all over 40 years old and multiple different platforms, some of which (MSX) are nowhere near possible to get again. Albeit that Metal Gear for the MSX is available on MG collections. In current year, if you really care for a series and are so far behind, whether you're 20 or 40 years of age, you can literally "skip around." The method I've noticed that helps is simply watch a few of the earlier games on (J)outube, aka longplays and preferably longplays over let's plays. Yakuza has only been around since the PS2 era, which you can easily emulate or as mentioned before, just watch it on (J)outube and continue on until you're caught up. >Oh Dragon Quest 7 remake is coming out? Better catch up! Come on anon, it's not that hard. Hell, you could even search for an abridged story version of Yakuza the same way some dude did for the Dead Space series. I hope you're not into Japanese radio dramas, because then, hoh ho hoh ho. wew lad anyway, have fun playing it, seems like fun, i only partially played the first one way back.
>>1760978 But it's not just about the story, it's about feeling the gameplay evolve. I remember when Skyward Sword was announced I was very impressed, and decided to try to catch up on the whole Zelda series, despite only beating the first three by that point. It took me so long that by the time I finally got to Skyward Sword, Tears of the Kingdom was about to come out. And now I'm fully caught up, and I think I did have more fun because I experienced the full evolution of the series. And it's not because of story, because Zelda obviously is not about the story. But seeing the gameplay evolve, seeing everything about the series evolve, was cool.

>>1760978 To be fair, skipping around entries is very situational thing that solely depends on the series itself, rather than it's longevity. You mention Mario as an exception, but I disagree; given the way Mario is laid out, you can start by SMB3, SM64, New Soup 2 or Odyssey and it wouldn't make a significant difference. Metal Gear, however, It's heavily dependent on the game you pick, cause you can start by MG1 in virtue of being the real-life first, MGS in virtue of being the series' "checkpoint" and the first of it's series or MGS3 in virtue of being the in-universe first, but starting with any other game would leave you in an awkward spot. Then you have the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games where it also doesn't matter where you start because none of them are related to each other (as far as I know, though)... and then there's Zelda, where no matter where you start, you're always missing out on things because all games are connected to each other in a subtextual way lmao. I'd say skipping series is only relevant based on the amount of information you're missing out on for both the game's gameplay and storytelling. I personally like to take my time to see where it's best to start a series with based on it's gameplay progress over the years and their story while also discarding prequel/origin stories out of the equation. If you got me to choose between starting with Yakuza 1 or Yakuza 0, I'd choose Yakuza 1 because I want to know what the series was at it's inception, same reason I started Metal Gear Solid with 1 instead of 3.
>>1761050 Starting Metal Gear with MGS3 is absolutely retarded. It's a prequel, which is a type of sequel, and meant to be played after the things it's a sequel to. Release order is always correct, except for in the case of Star Wars because the creator specifically begs viewers to watch it in chronological order.
>>1761056 I mean sure, it kind of is, considering I wouldn't do that myself... but I personally think it's a realistic option given it's a "first" in it's own way, so I see a lot of people going for MGS3 first because of that, same way people would go for Yakuza 0 instead of Yakuza 1.
>>1760906 >has a seizure with TTYD Try opengl graphics, it worked for me after experiencing the same thing
>>1761050 I understand what you're saying but I think I am by now a little tired of hearing people ask this (in general). It started when MGS Phantom Pain was close to releasing and people asking ad naseum where to start. The consensus was to start by release order with the MSX games being exceptions because for all those games were, you get the exact same thing in MGS (1998) which in some (my) view is one of the best remakes ever made. regardless, your points are valid because it does depends on games that are story focused (MG) or more gameplay focused (Mario). And as for Zelda, isn't there all kinds of time travel in that now?
>>1761104 The story of the Zelda franchise overall is very complicated, with generational battles and time travel and split timelines, but the story of each individual game is generally pretty light. They all reference each other, but you can understand and enjoy practically any of them on their own. Even a few that are more direct sequels, like how Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild, are still more standalone than a lot of games from other series. But of course if you do that you're missing how the gameplay changes. Tears of the Kingdom's gameplay is Breath of the Wild with more stuff tacked onto it, some for better and some for worse. It would feel weird going backwards through the entries.
posting for mood idk how to embed this here, sorry https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/im0RmkCWgk8
>>1761109 I had only played A Link to the Past when I tried Breath of the Wild last year (yup never played n64 thru wii versions of zelda). And while I liked the new take on gameplay, I like hunting and crafting, but man did I feel so underpowered while first playing that I gave up on it not even 5 hours in. maybe i'll get it again after playing dq3 remake to try. it was my understanding BoW and TotK filtered A LOT of people?
>>1759195 Do you have a recommendation for a PS4 emulator? Theres a few options but I trust the opinions here more than some jeet/AI article written about them
>>1761115 Hello newfriend, we usually avoid posting youtube links here, instead we use an invidous instance it's something from a very long ago, basically it was in order to do view denial, as in not even give a view to the jewtuber https://yewtu.be/watch?v=im0RmkCWgk8 Next step, would be to download a video and post it as an mp4/webm, but it's not something that can always be done. Would post it as a webm, but right now I am no Tor, and it's a bit more difficult
Sage for double posting >>1761187 (Me) And .se is back.
>>1761129 I just did not try to fight much in that game until much later. I never found combat to be the point of Zelda. Breath of the Wild is about exploration. You can simply avoid a lot of combat, at least until much later in the game. But yeah Breath of the Wild is one of the most standalone entries in the franchise. It references all of them, but it takes place over ten thousand years in the future, after whatever game would otherwise be latest (I guess Hyrule Warriors, or Zelda II if you don't count that). The point is just that it's so long after that all the previous games are forgotten, or only remembered as very vague legends with a few artifacts (pieces of clothing), or ancient landmarks to be found. Link to the Past is also very standalone. The back of the box says it's a prequel to the first two games, but the game itself doesn't make explicit reference to that. Aside from a few landmarks and enemy types recurring, it's practically a reboot. Ocarina of Time, on the other hand, is much more explicitly a prequel to Link to the Past, and references Zelda I and II rather significantly, but it's not like the story relies on you knowing the old stuff in order to get enjoyment out of it. I wouldn't say the same for Metal Gear Solid 3. I think a very big part of that is the satisfaction of seeing that world in the past, seeing how it got to where we saw it in earlier games.
>>1761140 The only ps4 emulator worth using is shadps4, alternatively you can always buy a used ps4 pro with 12.02 or older software to jailbreak it
>>1761644 Shadps4 is also the only real PS4 emulator. There are/were others but they're either closed or abandoned. The first PS4 emu to get real attention was Spine but that was abandoned in 2022 and was closed source. We have an actual emulation thread rather than discussing this in the Yakuza thread
>>1761648 Yakuza 1 and 2 along with the PS3 spinoffs can only be played on PC through emulation, so it's somewhat fitting.
>>1757667 >>1757946 Does it run the ace combat games properly yet?
>>1763850 It ran them fine like ten years ago on a laptop, I am sure it's even better now.
>>1763850 Yes, cont. here >>1763956
>>1761140 The only real option is Shadps4. There are technically others, but that by far is the most developed and supported. One of the recent milestones is getting Ratchet 2016 to run. As somebody following the PS4 emu scene for 9 years, it is incredible how fast SPS4 moved. It went from "kinda boots menus" to "genuine emulator" in the span of like a few months. It helps the devs had a decade of abandoned and scrapped projects to learn from.
So, TGS soon. Hopes? Expectations? Fears?
>>1780244 Kiwami 3 already leaked which was like the last thing I wanted them to do. Hopefully Stranger Than Heaven still looks good.

Kiwami 3's been officially announced now, although I only see English dub trailers right now. Along with the main game, there is a prequel where you play as Mine covering the story of him joining the Tojo clan. Nakahara, Hamazaki, and Rikiya got hit with the Real Japanese Actor likeness stick. Kiryu's shirt green now.
>>1783686 I said earlier in the thread (different ID now probably) there's a huge list of things I would rather they have done than remake 3, but the Mine story does soften the blow a bit.
>>1783686 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KezwEjSgcU a gameplay of Mine. Looks interesting but if it's like th eother dlcs it won't be long and overpriced
Is RGG studio just gonna go the remake train like everyone else?
>>1785849 This is already the 4th remake they're putting out so it isn't anything new for them. But it's obvious the Kiwami and Gaiden games are the smaller workload projects that are a faster to release between the main line entries that require creating more band new assets. Making the assets for Hawaii naturally leads to remaking Okinawa with them, plenty people saw Kiwami 3 coming.
>>1783686 >Another shitty dragon engine remake >For a game that didn't need one at all <But at least there's some new story >But the normal story will be remade worse because this is current day RGG Nah that's a fucking hard pass Why don't they port the psp games instead? Cowards.
>>1785966 My thoughts exactly. This is a pirate from me. I did enjoy Yakuza 3's story but I won't support a lazy cash grab like this.
>>1786143 >This is a pirate from me. It has denuvo.
>>1787307 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ They won't get my money for this title either way, and they removed denuvo from previous titles in the past. I'm not torn up about it.
