Touhou Project is a video game series created by Team Shanghai Alice. ZUN, the founder and only member of the group, is the sole mind behind the games, from the code to the graphics to the music and everything in between. The first game was released in 1997. Most of the games are part of the bullet hell shoot-'em-up genre, where the player dodges waves of beautiful and destructive curtains of bullets called danmaku. ZUN is a staunch supporter of doujin developers and has encouraged others to create fanworks based on Touhou Project. This has lead to Touhou becoming a cornerstone of internet culture for over two decades through memes, music remixes, artwork, and fan animations.
