The Optimization Question Anonymous 06/10/2024 (Mon) 01:47:32 Id: 2c5b28 No. 978509
https://archive.ph/3i5k2 What happened over the years with video game optimization? The latest CoD slop to come out will be 306 gigabytes in size on launch. What the fuck is causing such an inflation of space? Back in the early 00's, the PS3 had 160 gigabytes for most models, and that could still fit many games, I recall my fat boy PS3 having about 15 games installed of various sizes, and I could swear I had room for more. Is this a problem with design philosophy? Competency crisis? Something more sinister?
>>979329 what I'm asking if procedural generation maybe took a giant leap with ai to the point where you would no longer be able to tell the difference between human made and procedural content? on one hand daggerfall used very basic and primitive methods to generate things and ai is clearly advanced enough to replace a writing team but there seem to be still a pattern that humans notice e.g. you can guess if an artwork was made by ai or human
>>979448 >You're not allowed to ask questions that hurt my feelings because I can't answer them! I don't understand the point of your image.
>>979668 It's a Gish gallop that doesn't even bother to make a case for any of his points.
Poor optimization sells hardware. I think NV and some of the other shiteaters pay for this behavior. Starfield is a good example - perfectly playable on a 1080 and a 10 year old CPU, if you change a few things and rescale it's textures down to sane ranges FPS will go from 15 to 60 everywhere.
>>1008625 NV did this exact same thing with Crysis 2. AMD's tessellation hardware wasn't as good as NV's at the time, so NV paid Crytek to "optimize" the game by adding a giant tessellated water mesh underneath every level that tanked performance.
GC is a joke
>>1008781 It had a lot of fun games though :(
>>1008795 Did you know text adventures from the '80s could sometimes actually reply to what you typed at them? You have less processing power than a fucking Apple II.

>>978563 I'll probably be building a new PC for my niece at the end of the month so she can play that slop and Farm Sim. Kind of debating whether or not I should try to talk her out of it since that's a lot of money to lay down on shit she can already play on her Xbox, and she needs to be using that cash to get her fucking busted ass vehicle out of my driveway. >>978590 >That art style is fucking hideous. It was hideous to me years ago, but art direction and character design has absolutely cratered in western developed games. At the very least Fortnite looks clean, vibrant, like it's trying to be fun - and the characters have generally well distinguished profiles. I've just become a lot more ambivalent to it, and mostly I hate on the game for being brand slop wrapped around a mediocre gameplay loop. Same reason why I quit playing PSO2.
>>1008812 >new PC >to play Fortnite How old was her old PC? From the system requirements a RAM upgrade should be more than enough.
>>1008829 She doesn't have one at all right now. Just an Xbox series S. Aside from a few she plays with friends, she's not really into games - and she's too goddamned fat to be an Onlyfans streamer. I don't really see the point in her getting one when she's got other things she needs to be spending her money on. But... fuck it, if I don't build it for her, she'll just buy a Walmart pre-built at a 50% markup with a Chinese power supply filled up with iron filings. That, and I think she's kind of inspired by my ATS sim rig, so she's going to eventually want to get a steering wheel, button box, shifter, and VR or a TrackIR or something for her farm sim.
>>1008836 From what I've heard, prebuilt prices have gotten a bit better over the years, with the insane graphics markup. >chinesium power supply That's still a concern, yeah. Is there any way to dual boot the Xbox? That'd solve everything at once.
>>1008836 >I don't really see the point in her getting one when she's got other things she needs to be spending her money on. Then don't. >But... fuck it, if I don't build it for her, she'll just buy a Walmart pre-built at a 50% markup with a Chinese power supply filled up with iron filings. And that's your problem...how?

>>1008812 I have grown to unironically love Fat Diego. What a character design, his pants are hiked up to his tits, his trench coat looks like it's made of plastic and is arching over from his distended belly. Anytime I see this obese bastard a smile comes to my face.
>>1008839 >Is there any way to dual boot the Xbox? Probably, but I'm not jailbreaking other people's shit. It's too much of a pain in the ass to play tech support when they inevitably fuck something up. Phil's talked about putting full-on Windows installs on the Xbox and allowing people to use third party storefronts, but if that happens - I doubt they'll do anything until next gen, or it'll just be for the rumored handheld. >>1008842 >And that's your problem...how? It's just family. You gotta look out for family. Or at least pick your battles. If I'm going to be a dick about anything, I'll be a dick about her getting her fucking vehicle off my property.
>>1008848 >It's just family. You gotta look out for family. Or at least pick your battles. That is very nice of you, but be wary of them using the F-word on you expecting free support. Because every family member I've ever build a PC for has come to me crying years later for making their zoom call fuck up or that I personally siphoned the ink out of their printer. >>1008843 Honestly, if the game was about futuristic mall ninjas or a Los Angeles pest control company gang war, he would fit right in. But as an intergalactic bounty hunter, god damn that's embarrassing.
>>1008851 Help once, means you volunteered to be tech support the rest of your life and anything that goes wrong is your responsibility/fault, regardless of what the F themselves did.
>>1008856 The general case of this is why welfare must wilt. The xenos think access to Whites is their "human" right and have turned fat and entitled off White labors, taking the White world down with their greed and gluttony.
>>1008861 Don't gotta make it weird, I agree with you but this is just about computers and family being retarded
(68.06 KB 450x200 computers-are-racist.jpg)

>>1008856 I'm still the only "Computer Guy" in the family, so I'm used to it by now. Modern computers are a hell of a lot more idiot proof now than they used to be. There will be some of that I'm sure, but it's been a long time since I was spending every other weekend digging out malware out of someone's system because they clicked the wrong facebook popup or installed some sketchy sex hookup software. For all Windows 10/11's faults, I've noticed that it does tend to keep retards corralled away from vital system components and scam software. Either that or they're so conditioned by the surface level access of their phones that they never bother to get into trouble these days.
>>1008870 >I just wanna grill Bit late on Planet of the Apes. In a time when trannies are normal, weird is a badge of honor.
>>1008872 Put them on a user account with no administrator permissions so they can't execute downloaded files, it should keep them out of trouble.
>>1008872 >>1008883 Or you could just buy them a Mac.
>>1008625 > perfectly playable on a 1080 and a 10 year old CPU What about a 980 and a 15 year old CPU?

>>1008884 >Overpaying to Mac level for a relative's Facebook system
(893.32 KB 1024x768 ansi_blondie_by_ice.png)

>>1008884 >Buy them a Mac No, I love my family. >>1008883 Not a bad idea, but I'd probably just end up getting called over more often to manually install the stuff for them - and it'd create resentment because they can't use their own property without my permission. I've done it with some of the younger nieces and nephews, as well as setting them up as child accounts to mine so I can monitor what they're doing. Surprisingly they're a pretty good bunch and I've only had to restrict or lock them out of their systems a few times when they were grounded or slacking on their school work. They barely use it for anything but Youtube and stuff for school. Shit, when I was their age I was browsing gore sites, distributing copies of the Jolly Rogers Handbook, and piggybacking BBSs to access a local collage's network so we could skim their internet access without paying.
>>1008932 >Won't buy them a Mac, I love my family It's like buying them an expensive car, then they have to pay expensive insurance, and expensive maintenance, and replace expensive parts. Worse, when Macs break the usual fix is "replace the whole damn thing."
>>1008930 >>1008950 In context of idiotproofing for family who aren't good at computers Macs do it better despite being overpriced.
>>1008960 If that decides it just buy them a phone.

>>1008993 I would more say PS3 but yeah.
>>1009009 Yeah, looks like a slicker max Payne, so ps3.
>>1008969 >Crackberry RIP my sweet prince
>>1008930 Used macs can be cheap because the sheep need to upgrade every year.
>>1009089 Or because the Intel ones are doomed to obsolescence.

>>1008969 Android is interesting because it's basically just a distro of Linux but nobody considers it that. This graph is mixing smarthphone and desktop OS, which I never like.
