Gundam finally competing against Warhammer 40k in traditional gaming Anonymous 01/04/2025 (Sat) 21:36:55 Id: 642292 No. 1252 [Reply]
This is actually some really big news since Games Workshop has been getting sloppy recently and Gundam can introduce some new competition into the space. Still, I figured this was huge enough news to make a thread on the subject since Gundam is officially /tg/ now. Personally I don't know what to expect, but I hope for good things.

>>1461 Yeah, I meant this and the card game. I will say the card game has a solid foundation and I like they got a cross promotion going on with the pre-order structure decks getting you minis as well. Smart move.
>>1466 That's cool. I had been curious about the card game. It hasn't shown up at any of my locals so I wasn't even aware it was out yet.
>>1547 My friend managed to get into the beta and my LGS were putting up the pre-orders for the structure decks, hence why I was able to get it. He knew what I liked as well, he got me the Zeon attack! deck which comes with two Zaku II and a Char Zaku II mini for the miniatures game.

Really sad that this happened, the minis looked so cool, the rules looked kinda ass but I could have reworked Savage Worlds Showdown rules to make something more like what I'd want. I really like the minis and I want to buy / print some and paint them. I haven't given a penny to these guys yet and knowing they're SJWs I probably won't now. I missed the Kickstarter because I didn't have space or time for a wargame but now I more likely do in the future so I might print some of these at some point.
To be honest, I lost interest the more it moved away from Occult WW1 to the fantasy WW1Hammer it is now.

/osrg/ is dead, but /osr/ is so FUCKING back! This is thread for Tactical Studies Rules (TSR), Old School Revival/Renaissance (OSR), Fantasy Adventure Gaming (FAG), Classic Adventure Gaming (CAG), and other faggot (nuSR) games, i.e. Boomer D&D and bootlegs thereof. Generally speaking, the OSR playstyle focuses on a very early 1970s "intended" D&D playstyle heavy on logistics and player skill that was displaced later. Some games that are generally the focus of this general are: >Original, Basic, and Advanced 1st Edition D&D >clones like OSRIC, Labyrinth Lord, Old-School Essentials Other games are not strictly OSR but related: >Advanced 2nd Edition D&D >Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG and derivatives >Basic Fantasy RPG The above lists are not comprehensive! Core OSE rules: https://oldschoolessentials.necroticgnome.com/srd/index.php/Main_Page

>>1542 My circle of friends, four different tables a week. You're in what we call the "nogames" camp
>>1544 That sounds interesting. I take it OSR is mostly build on a "Trust the Dice" kind of mindset? I did want to say that I had an interesting concept that I could work into a game (I originally had an idea about it for 5e for 5E, but don't tell webring /tg/ about that), a sort of alternate ruleset for honest rolls. Basically, roll a number of D6 (~72, I would say). Your character's strength is equal to the number of 1s, their Dex is equal to the number of 2s, ETC. Has someone come up with this idea before? >>1545 It's interesting to hear stories about this, given I have not played OSR (Yeah, I'm a newfaggot as far as this goes, having only done far less grognardy sorts of stuff). I might give it a stab at some point, but my RPG schedule is already starting to get packed as is.
>>1551 >I take it OSR is mostly build on a "Trust the Dice" kind of mindset? In a sense, yes. You know how Blood Bowl is a game where as a player you want to minimize the dice rolls as much as possible? That's kinda of the OSR mentality but focused on a smaller scale. >Basically, roll a number of D6 (~72, I would say). That's a bit much.

>>1515 Nice! I was also playing with idea of introducing action points but ended up with fast action economy, where you basically started with 3 fast action and could convert 2 fast action to 1 slow action, or use fast action as reaction during enemy/ally turn. The whole idea was that you can have equipment/statuses, that add/remove fast action from your pool. >If I ever run another YZE gothic horror, I will probably use Stress Dice from the Alien or something like that. I found out that Resolve is good replacement for Sanity/Stress, at least my usage was: >Resolve is hard to recover >You bet Resolve points, when pushing rolls >Current Resolve value is used for resource rolls, when sanity is checked >Exhausting Resolve results in mental collapse, breaking the character
>>1529 Well, it seems we came to somewhat similar mechanics. Your Fast Actions sound like my Action Points, and your Resolve sounds like my Focus/Fatigue Points. It is indeed nice. I just like the idea that, for example, you can have from one to three Stress Dice, and when 1s are rolled, there are consequences regardless of whether the roll was pushed or not. I would home rule that, let's say, when all three 1s are rolled, the PC is doomed. He will die immediately or at the next suitable opportunity. It brings a kind of Hitchcockian tension. When the stakes are high and your stress reaches maximum, there is always a doom looming over you with every action, making you anxious, not just depleting a resource.

I am looking to make a campaign set in a grounded JRPG kinda setting. Think Tactics Ogre, Unicorn Overlord, Suikoden, FFT, the first two TitS games.etc. I don't want mechanics for over the top teleport behind you powers, but still a bit fantastical. So no Exalted stuff. A decent character creator with customization. Tactical, but not super-tacital combat, so no theatre of mind. And not super crunchy I got plenty of world building tools, and the plan is to use them to slowly flesh out the world and villages and themes
Have you tried Fabula Ultima? I have heard good things about it. Not really sure what would fit your requirements that isn't D&D. Maybe try and modify the story teller system? There is also the unofficial d100 elder scrolls game.

>>1477 Yeah, found it a a week or two. It's been pretty good, I like the class system, and it got a lot of fun world building stuff. But, from what I gather, it's a lot of scene-specific stuff. But, I will use the books a lot

Ironclaw Anonymous 08/15/2023 (Tue) 12:43:56 Id: 622803 No. 992 [Reply]
Ok I know how this looks but hear me out. Ironclaw has a pretty neat looking system underneath the anthro characters. How it works is that basically you have several different dice depending on your skills, career and gifts. You roll all of them and instead of adding them all up you only take the highest showing number. I thought this was neat since it means lower dice like D4 and D6 can still be useful since difficulty checks seem to generally be on the lower side. Character stats are also kinda funny. They are represented by dice instead of numbers. So when making a character you assign dice to attributes, a D4 in body might represent a weak and scrawny rat. On the contrary a D8 in body might mean the character is quite fit. The funny part though is that both Career and species are stats. So assigning a D4 to a rat would mean that character is really bad at being a rat. Conversely putting a D8 in Species means your character would be far more rat than he is human. Not even anthro anymore, He is just a rat. I am going to be playing this with the group on friday and I am very excited.
