I'll have to give it a whirl after finishing Look Outside. Wasn't expecting it to be free, but it seems this is only Chapter 1.

Pretty good. I wish Ena didn't use the masculine voice as often as she does.
Played 2 "routes" so far, passed the skill check run, was very satisfying. The humor and aesthetics are in line with previous episodes, I'd say. I think one issue I have with these walking sims/LSD-likes, (besides the massive amounts of forgiveness), is that I sometimes get nauseous or motion sick playing them for extended periods

>>1084078 It's lowkey a playable animation. The creator is a professional animator after all Visually the game is great and super polished, the gameplay is serviceable, nothing too fancy, like a single step beyond a walking sim. You either love the aesthetic and will break your back hunting every single secret and bit of lore or you'll find it completely uninteresting.

>>1084101 I love weird games that don’t prioritize gameplay, but I have a pretty significant distaste for games that try to emulate the aesthetics of old games in new engines like Unity. Haunted PS1, Ultrakill, Buckshot, etc - genuinely, I would rather set up a Windows 95 virtual machine and throw a CD from a Freegames/LMW ripper on Internet Archive than play any of that shit. I played Dream BBQ for an hour and might revisit it. I’ve watched every previous Ena and I always liked Hands Up more anyway.
>>1084106 Give a try. The paradigm is shifting There's been interesting developments in shading / filters for indies. They are getting pretty close to emulating the aesthetic of old 2000s content, but also firmly their own thing. Simply things like a Dithering emulator for things like Mouthwashing make interesting visuals.

>>1084112 Do you have any favorites among the type of game that Dream BBQ is trying to emulate? LSD, Myst, Drowned God, Pink Gear, Cyber Oz City, Toymaker. There's enough stuff on Saint's channel alone to fill a replica of the 4/vr/ surreal exploration game list.

Game is fun if you like adventure games and/or weird aesthetics. The character roster is pretty memorable with the list of oddballs you can meet and/or do odd jobs for. This Ena isn't as fun most of the time because her secondary/girl-voiced side isn't as active. Depressed Ena was fun in the web series and pissed(?) Ena is fun in the game, but the latter doesn't come out as often. I wish to impregnate the schizo catgirl.

ENA was already one of the last bastions of absurdist internet art, being and adventure game puts even more "outdated" weight on it's shoulders but it might work out since chapter one seems good. >>1084281 He effectively bypassed all the bullshit VA union FAGtra bullshit by asking his youtuber friends to voice characters for free, it's a smart move. >>1084071 It's not, Joel G used to keep telling them to fuck off when someone assumed it was but I think he gave up on repeating the whole spiel at somepoint and just says that ENA is a girl without expanding on it when someone asks. >>1084296 ENA's left face is on her third VA.

>>1084671 I fucking love that wizard. You talk to him again and he's just vibing, but if yo KEEP talking to him, he'll stop, then just stare at you.
I hate ENA because it's complete absurdism for the sake of absurdism. Maybe that makes a statement and I'm retarded but it really irks me the exact same way randumb quirky humor does. That plus the main character is a wacky woman who is voiced by a man makes me think the creator is either a faggot or tranny, as is almost always the case with shit of this style. I don't know anything about the artist but I've disliked it all purely off of a gut feeling.
>>1084678 It used to be called "Dadaism"
>>1084694 see >>1084671 It's not troonery, it's just an aesthetic choice.
>>1084704 Ok. I still don't like it.
>>1084697 Dadaism is pretentious pseudo-intellectual commie garbage. Perhaps the most utterly worthless "contribution" of the 20th century.
>>1084713 Like most art that came out during the late 19th and early/mid 20th century. Including cubism, expressionism, fauvism, pop, etc...
>>1084694 He's a man from Peru Fucking Christ you niggers never played a 90s adventure game.
>>1084694 I want to pet those kittens Consider switching from clay litter to wood based litter (I buy ökocat super soft wood clumping cat litter) Wood based kinds have less of a smell, less dust, is healthier for their feet, and is lighter. Best of luck to them!
>>1084694 > it's complete absurdism for the sake of absurdism. I'll be real with you: It's only absurdism if you fail to pick the references. ENA borders on 2deep4u /mu/ tier autism on the sheer amount of references to "cultural aesthetics" it has. it's not trying anything new really, it's all a reference to something. The last sentence is a bit of a criticism tbh.
>>1084713 >>1084715 The key error was assuming the only value “realism” had was supplanted by photos. Real life stuff simply looks better than abstract stuff for the most part. You might say that real women are uglier than fictional ones, and overall you’d be right, but the most good looking fictional women in my opinion have a “photo-realistic” artstyle while at the same time exceeding the beauty of actual real women. Not to mention you can have surrealistic elements like coloring, structures, etc while still having realistic anatomy, shading, etc. At the same time, not every appealing piece of art is in a realistic art style, but it all has the same kind of symmetry that real life has. Even when a character design is asymmetrical it’s still comprised of symmetry. It’s difficult to put into words. Samurai Jack looks good, Picasso’s Weeping Woman looks bad. But Samurai Jack’s artsyle is probably descended from commie art like Picasso’s, or at the very least there’s similarity.
>>1084671 >It's not, Joel G used to keep telling them to fuck off when someone assumed it was but I think he gave up on repeating the whole spiel at somepoint and just says that ENA is a girl without expanding on it when someone asks. That's honestly really good to hear. I've always loved her design. Why even have the dichotomy, then? And why explicitly have a male voice? Shouldn't it just be a philosophically different female one?
>>1086577 Because it's weird. This is surrealism for the sake of it without meaning. ENA having 5 faces with different personalities & like 3 different voices shouldn't be baffling.
(62.56 KB 377x437 1382670005769.jpg)

It actually took me a while (while being "several years") to even notice one was a male, and someone else had to point it out to me first. Kids itt and on 4v seem completely clueless on decades old practices in the industry and instantly cry "tranny game" when they head the VAs. Don't even wanna imagine what English speaking kids go through at school to end up so paranoid at the mere prospect of hearing a male sounding voice on a fem character.
>>1086612 >4v The question is why the fuck you're using the trainwreck that is 4/v/? I don't think I've posted there in over a decade.
>>1086638 News? What else would I use hobby boards for? Occasionally something worth replying to pops up, but it's really just for news.
(184.91 KB 618x590 thinking roman architect.png)

>>1086612 >Don't even wanna imagine what English speaking kids go through at school to end up so paranoid at the mere prospect of hearing a male sounding voice on a fem character. There were people that thought tails and slipply were girls in the 90s until they recasted them because they sound feminine when the intention was young and naive young boy voice instead. So a woman has a guy voice = tranny or guy is a perfectly normal assumption. This is just a failure of execution of the author to convey his intentions to the audience.
>>1086712 News like “would you let vegeta anal-vore your mom”? Cuck/v/ has been naught but a glorified /b/ for over a decade now.
>>1086743 The only people that thought Tails was a girl only played the games with no dialogue in them, never read the manuals, and never watched the TV shows or read the comics. The voice had nothing to do with it. In the TV shows and comics, Sonic is always calling Tails "little bro" and stuff like that. Also, Tails was actually played by male voice actors in all of his English appearances until Sonic X. But even with all of that, I still think it's silly to look at that character design and think it looks feminine. My hypothesis is that people who had little sisters are the ones that thought Tails was a girl. Tails is the character you give to your younger sibling that sucks at video games but wants to play with you anyway. Slippy being a girl is just ridiculous. I mean look at him.
(7.25 KB 480x360 slippy.jpg)

>>1086766 >Slippy being a girl is just ridiculous. I mean look at him. Now I get what you mean by that, but when I was a young kid I actually thought Slippy was a girl due to his voice being very high-pitched. The Pixelated picture also made me think his hat was actually a hair tie for a pony tail. It wasn't really something I thought that hard about, at some point eventually I realized I was wrong about that. In that regard, I thought my Aunt was a guy for years because she wasn't traditionally feminine in her Appearance to me, and had a voice that could be mistaken for a guy at my young age.
>>1086743 Lucio, statistically you'll find the opposite case in the VA industry, many cartoon characters are voiced by their opposite gender due to pitch, accent or age requirements, or sometimes simply because they can make it work, and few people ever find out. Even then people should intuitively grasp that a character with multiple personalities, in a series known for it's intentional misdirection, has considerable leeway in their choice of VA >>1086778 well, nothing stops 12 years old from posting here.

I really like the genie Theodora and her Greek way of sing-speaking.
huh, there's an ENA thread here too. Good, good. I see everyone here wanted to fuck taski too. Good taste.
>>1084694 I don't mind one of her voices being voiced by a man, the problem is the voice doesn't sound like a woman. You get character voiced by people of the opposite gender but it normally works because they are specifically putting on a voice that sounds like the gender they're meant to be portraying. But that voice doesn't sound female, and the belief that it doesn't sound female is justified in discovering it literally isn't a female doing the voice.
>>1092351 anon the voices are just voices, they're not supposed to sound realistically female, they're supposed to just be tones that she speaks in remember she's also half red half white and made of floating polygons I think you're all just overcome with so much tranny derangement that you freak out over if when it's not there and then demand things be made such that you can't possible conflate them with trannies anymore to soothe your own panic
>>1094383 It makes it very hard to think of the character as female though. Since ENA speaks with that male voice most of the time and appearance-wise almost passes for a boy. Also I never mentioned trannies, you're the one who has brought that up.
>>1097821 When you walk into alcoholics anonymous you assume everyone is thinking of booze even when they're not saying it Let's not pretend we haven't all been on the web long enough to know it always comes back to tranny chimpouts regardless of what websites you're on Still though, I understand if you didn't mean that and just meant you struggle to see it as analogous to a real person, but still I must remind you that it's not a real person If your mind struggles with an unusual thing in a game all about absurdism, it then it's best to train it to absurdism because this is what you're getting, as opposed to demanding the absurd thing be made more palatable to someone's preexisting expectations about the real world
>>1098657 >as opposed to demanding the absurd thing be made more palatable to someone's preexisting expectations about the real world But you're doing that by assigning a gender to it in the first place.

>>1109000 >But the dev did that by assigning a gender to it in the first place
>>1113644 yes, the dev also gave it visuals and sounds that the human mind can comprehend absurdism is about giving you specks of insanity intertwined with things you recognize, not a cacophony of ethereal noises of visuals the eyes cannot concieve and the brain cannot theorize of like some kinda impossible ninth dimensional being, there will always be ideas that your brain recognizes but it also demands you take those ideas and go on from there, not get stuck on "b-but these two things don't match most real world cases, i-i don't know what to think!!! reeeeeeeeeee!" if a concept as simple, basic and frankly quite entry level in the realm of absurdism as 'mismatched voice' sends you into a shock maybe absurdism isn't for you, maybe start with childrens' picture books and go up from there when you can handle it just don't read the one about the talking elephants, elephants don't talk in reality and your brain might explode if you see it in the pages seriously, it's very obvious what you're focused on and cannot let go of, it's the things you're subconsciously most obsessed with, and you accepting everything else *but* it makes it clear you have some personal mental hangup on that isn't our problem if you accepted that doors lead to locations they're not supposed to lead to, 2dimensional people walk around in 3 dimensions, people get eaten and korean women exist, and yet "female with... male voice? whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?" is what did it, ask yourself why that's your mind's breaking point and then don't tell me i don't really care about your past traumas just sort it out away from me
>>1113944 Not reading that wall of text but I agree with him, it's annoying having this sexy cubic block of fuckmeat talk with a male voice most of the time. >>1127005 The bathroom sequence seems to indicate that the angry voice is the "real" ENA and the Entrepreneur / Worker voice is an artificial addition.
>>1132933 I don't think that's the case, ENA clearly uses the female voice when she's upset or emotional so it make sense it'd be the voice she uses when she's hungover and feeling like shit I don't personally think any voice is "more" or "less" real, they're both just two sides of her >>1132907 Also I absolutely love Theodora's voice and singing, it's so nice sounding

It's painfully contrived, especially when compared to one of its inspirations like LSD Dream Emulator, a literal dreamscape recreated from a dev's dream journal. I don't think it's simply the knowledge of ENA's intentionality that's ruining it, but there's something there which is off-putting, and it probably comes from the intent to create the surreal. Not even saying that the intent to create the surreal will always produce something stilted and weird (in a bad way), it's just the case here
>>1176672 Was the wiznerd a reference to anything? It feels like he is but I don't recognize it. I'm ashamed that I didn't realize ENA's poses at the start of the game are a reference to Japanese Spiderman, I've watched a ton of that show and still didn't notice it
