Majora's Mask Anonymous 04/18/2025 (Fri) 22:19:40 Id: 81cb40 No. 1138086
I've been replaying this lately, it's a lot of fun and has a great atmosphere.

I don't have a lot to add but MM is a masterpiece and it will always be my favorite if I had to pick one. I love OOT and WW but neither come close to the creativity of MM. Time crunch and limitations worked out very well for it. Best Link, best abilities and items, coolest environments, weirdest enemies (in a good way), best written NPCs and dialogue of any Nintendo game (though I'll admit I haven't played Mother 3 nor gotten far in 2 so I don't have those as a reference), and overall just so standout and memorable. Perfect example of a same engine sequel done right.
>>1138086 I started playing it randomized seriously for the first time because of all the new options and it's breathed a lot of life back into the game for me. Even learning the glitches is fun.
>>1138086 It's a shame no Zelda game since has managed to capture the same atmosphere. I still remember first playing it as a kid and being freaked by some of the details in the game.
>>1138386 >Time crunch and limitations worked out very well for it. This is also what's hurting modern day Zelda, too much dev time means a long wait for an otherwise underwhelming title. Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and even Skyward Sword should have had sequel games, and while I do love Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks especially to death, they would have flourished better on a console, using Wind Waker's exact engine. I don't care how stressed out Aonuma or whoever was developing MM, it's clear they had to think about what they were adding with such a short deadline and it worked. Those same conditions may spark some new life in the dev team today.
I lost my data around Ikana and didn't feel like restarting. it was cool though
My favourite game of all time. Playing this on a rainy night in with my cousin in our grandma's old house was KINO and SOULFULL

>>1140357 The Gorman Brothers chasing after Cremia's milk delivery definitely would feel out of place in any other Zelda game. Ditto for the Flatwoods Monsters that want to abduct the cows.
How do I play it? On Gamecube or 3ds? I've read emulating N64 is still tricky to this day. Is there a decompiled version for PC that's just download and play without hackering github nonsense?
>>1147646 Thanks man, I didn't know a decomp was released this recently. I tried a SM64 decomp but it wouldn't work.
>>1144763 Based memories. God I miss my grandma
Majora's Mask was one of the most unique games at the time and honestly still to this day. I can't really think of any game like it. The level of tragedy and despair. When you solve everyone's problems only to undo all of that just so you can save them and still have what you could've done haunt your mind. Its a really strange experience that most of the OOT retards can't really ever capture and I respect it for that.
>>1147766 The NPC schedules really made the world feel more alive than any other game back then. I was so invested in saving that town
>>1147823 MM is really definition of small world, detailed environment.
It's fun being pretentious. It's fun because in order to get there you have to think relatively highly of yourself, and then think that there's some profundity, some insight into your own perception that others don't also see. it's fun because, even if you're a brainlet, it makes you feel smart to notice and touch upon a work's themes and messaging, to use your limited brain power to connect dots and, through inference and pontification, posit theories about why and how and what and etc. regarding any given work. It's something of a problem, when every asshole under the sun gets to have an opinion. It dilutes discourse, and I'm saying this as someone who is far from a genius. I love Majora's Mask but this sort of game tends to attract those types of people, the pretentious hipster fuckwards who think they're smart because they can recite Socrates and Kant and Beauregard and Marx and whatever other big brained historical figure they can find to make themselves seem smart by proxy.

There's a lot of Tim Burton and Jim Henson influences in this game. I'd like to see a MM movie scored by prime Danny Elfman.

Please keep your bait at 4chan where it belongs. Forbid an imageboard has a genuine discussion about things.
I can still remember the first time running around Clock Town on the 3rd night. Seeing the place become a ghost town with Link pretty much the only one left and having that sense of unease as the earthquakes become more frequent and the sky becomes an ominous red. Then the countdown timer begins with the music starting to play and that feeling of time is running out as I'm panicking trying to figure out what to do. I don't think I've ever played another game that's made me feel like that. Majora's Mask really has a unique atmosphere that I can't really compare to anything else. Shame we'll probably never get anything like it again.

>>1151179 I know that, doesn't mean you need to bring that bullshit here.
(1.26 MB 1039x2655 gorman.png)

Who's your favorite NPC?
I love Majora's Mask for a variety of reasons I can't exactly narrow down. It's fun, creative, pushes the boundary of the Zelda formula and its system's limitations, memorable, but most importantly sort of embodies the overzealous "edge" a lot of games in the 90's-00's had. Probably explains why I like Twilight Princess more than most other people too. >>1152480 Deku Princess

Something about Majora's Mask feels more 'European' than other games in the series, I don't know if it's the carnival aspect of it or something else entirely.

It's a poetic masterpiece that recreates feelings of grief, despair, and existential loss better than not only any other game, but most other works of art. It's to video games what The Divine Comedy is to literature, and I don't care what anyone thinks, but I hold them as equals in quality.

>>1143323 >Time crunch and limitations worked out very well for it. Melee also had that in its favor and wound up being an accidental masterpiece
The manga for Majora's Mask was fucking retarded, it completely missed the point of the game's message. The author made the Happy Mask Salesman some evil spirit who wanted Majora's power for himself for no reason when in the game he was just an eccentric salesman who actually was happy about the evil spirit being gone and that the mask is no longer cursed. Not only that but rather than accepting that Navi is gone and moving on with his life since not all friendships last forever which was the message of the game, Link goes back on his fruitless quest to look for Navi instead of going back to Hyrule to settle down with Malon where TP Link will eventually be born.

>>1151020 Is there anything else you should do beside saving your money ? I feel like it's only panicking the first time, then you know you can just reset, and even better slow down time.
>>1138086 Is the original N64 release still worth seeking out? At some point I want to play through all the 3D Zelda games on original hardware, and I already got an expansion pak for Majora. >>1199535 You could add vanilla SMTV to the bottom right corner of your pic
>>1201608 you can look for the swordmaster that's hiding inside his shop in a hidden room scared shitless. It's kinda depressing really, Romani is all happy she finally gets to try Chateau Romani for the first time but it's just Cremia giving her a sip of the alcoholic milk so she wont suffer when the moon crashes.
>>1201715 There used to be a very good reason with all emulators being inaccurate but there's no longer a point with a native PC port. If you're dead set on the authentic experience, go for native res and hook up your computer to a CRT.
>>1199662 >written by a w*man Figures.
>>1201974 I never even realized that, no wonder why it sucked and felt like bad fan fiction. I wonder if the Twilight Princess manga is any good.

(181.65 KB 662x1024 1653915272530.jpg)

>>1202528 TP manga was widely celebrated and written by old women
>>1199662 The game left it pretty open ended with the whole "up to you" thing and Link by definition has no character to speak of. I'd see your point if HMS played a bigger role but that's a pretty inoffensive direction to take things in. >>1202671 It was so close until what I can only assume is a Nintendo mandate fucked it up at the last second.
>>1202751 Link making peace with not finding Navi is one of the most explicit things in the story. Skull kid's entire character arc and relationship with the giants is even exists to be a parallel with Link and Navi. Both that and the change to the happy mask salesman are outright inversions of the original story.
>>1203171 Again, Link has no character. Without anything explicit, there's nothing to invert and it's presented as a choice. Even as a theme, the Giants still saw Skull Kid as a friend despite their parting and the game's cast at large has a variety of angles and outcomes in that respect.
>>1203510 >Again, Link has no character. Yes he does. He wouldn't even be seeking out Navi in the first place if he didn't. >the Giants still saw Skull Kid as a friend despite their parting Yes, that's part of the point. Even though they have to leave it doesn't mean that they aren't still friends. And it's the same with Navi. It's not a choice, it's a lesson.
>>1203623 He has no visible reaction to nearly everything, no agency in any other respect, and no internal monologue. Couple that with the literal concept of him as laid out by Miyamoto being the link between the player and the game and it's pretty clear Link is an avatar to self-insert as. >And it's the same with Navi. The Giants' parting is explained in clear terms alongside each of the transformation mask characters, Anju and Kafei, and several other minor characters, unlike Navi. Some are forced apart physically or by circumstance, some go of their own volition, and what these characters do in response changes case by case. There isn't a clear right or wrong.
>>1203821 MM Link has more agency than most other Links and even more than some real world mythic heroes. His quest to find Navi is entirely on his own initiative. No one told him to do it and it's not for anyone else's sake. >The Giants' parting is explained in clear terms Not only does this have no relevance to the necessity of Link accepting Navi's departure, the giants themselves prove it. Skull kid was as ignorant of the reason for their leaving as Link was of Navi's. And in his clinging for them he brought suffering to himself and the rest of Termina. Link, having learned this lesson, knows not to follow the same path. Navi left and that's the reality Link has to deal with. Knowing or not knowing the underlying cause won't change that just as it didn't with the giants. Also, you're overly fixating on separation. That is not the cause of suffering for all the characters. While Anju and Kafei are separated, their real challenge is overcoming the doubts they harbor concerning one another and giving themselves up to trust. Darmani has to let go of his shame and regret at being unable to protect his people. And so on.
>>1204123 >MM Link has more agency than most other Links and even more than some real world mythic heroes. That's not a very high bar. The fact remains that he's virtually not fleshed out at all. >Skull kid was as ignorant of the reason for their leaving The player isn't though. It's presented without any room for doubt thematically and Skull Kid hurting people and suffering is nothing like Link running around the world and helping people along the way. It's fundamentally different from Navi which gets valid yet conflicting interpretations to this day and only ever concerns Link/Zelda. >That is not the cause of suffering for all the characters. The cause is their attachment to one another. It taking shape in different ways for each of them is a part of my point and many can be applied to Navi whether she chose to leave and if so, if it was for her own enjoyment, out of some kind of duty, or anything in between. The most important plot point is intentionally kept vague for the player to come to their own conclusion.
>>1199662 Where in the game did you get the part about accepting Navi being gone?
>>1147766 >>1147823 On my final loop before facing Skull Kid I went through doing as many things as I could - cleared the bosses, got the couple together, saved the ranch etc. all so when the loop ended, things would be in the best possible place. You have time to do so much once you know everyone's schedule. Amazing game.

>>1202671 This is like finding out Ranma was made by a woman.
>>1147766 Yeah there are other games that have been inspired by it clearly but nothing else has captured the same emotional poignance. I wish I hadn't written these games off for so long just for being popular.
>>1138086 I really dig OOT, but I just couldn't get into Majora's Mask due to the time limit etc. Seems like you need to know everything from the get go.
(590.10 KB 1440x778 MM_Little_Guy.png)

>>1209762 >Seems like you need to know everything from the get go. It's pretty forgiving. Only the "tutorial" (before you can turn back into a human) can be a real time crunch for newcomers, and it's supposed to feel like that. There's a bank in town where you can "save" your money between time resets, there are songs you learn from a scarecrow that let you slow down and speed up time to manage events better, and there's a lot of stuff you can keep forever like songs and masks that act as de facto checkpoints. Figuring out things as you go along is part of the fun.

I haven't played it and I kind of doubt it but I remember a number of people compared lightning returns to majoras mask back in the day.
>>1205511 If Tatl had an actual body like Tinkerbell and wasn't a floating orb I bet she would've been the Midna today having thousands of fan art and everyone agreeing that she's the best companion in the games. Lets be honest people only cared about Midna because they want to fuck her.

>>1229272 I like to think that the fairies that are orbs in Zelda games do have bodies, you just can't see them within the light. Of course that's also due to the technical limitations which in tune made way for an iconic design.

>>1254268 Bunny and FD, but since both have been said already my next up would be Stone or Mask of Truth. I used to think the Mask of Truth was super cool looking as a kid and would make paper ones to tape to my face.
>>1254268 All-Night Mask stood out to me as a kid for being a 'torture device'.

(412.84 KB 900x900 Deku.png)

(1.75 MB 1864x1838 MM3D_Deku_Link_Artwork.png)

>>1242776 I'm pretty sure it was outright confirmed either in the game guide or through developer commentary, but I don't have a source at hand so I very well might be pulling that out of my ass. >>1254268 Honestly? I might go with the Deku Mask. It's literally the first mask you get but it feels like it opens up so much of the game as a result of that. It's fun spinning around as Deku Link, gliding around with flower propellers, and infiltrating Deku royalty like a sneaky little shrub man. It was also really sad learning the subdued story of the Deku shrub you get it from and the understated loss of the Deku Butler compared to Darmani and Mikau's loved ones. Then again, it could just be my nostalgia speaking since the beginning of Majora's Mask was always my favorite part. Plus Deku Link has a funny set of horns, probably the second best instrument next to Zora Link's guitar.
(164.55 KB 314x305 MM_Wart_Model_2.png)

Haven't played this game in over a decade (not a big fan of the time cycle), but I think it has a really cool story and I occasionally watch people do randomizer runs of it.

Atmosphere is definitely the biggest draw Majora's Mask has as a Zelda game but I think the one thing that really brings me back every couple of years is how creative and unique a lot of its designs feel, especially the enemies. A lot of them are really vivid and striking but only show up a handful of times. Even as a kid it really stuck out to me how the Eyegore only showed up twice in the whole game, making it feel all that more rare and unique. There's actually a dozen or so enemies that only ever show up in Majora's Mask, plus all the other weird NPCs/"races" like the Beaver Bros., Gabora, and the Garo, who Nintendo probably couldn't get away with today. Not to get too off topic but Twilight Princess really felt like a spiritual successor to Majora's Mask in a lot of ways, mostly in terms of style and tone.
I have a friend who based his entire online persona off the happy mask salesman. He would rp as the guy in every single game we played, his entire profile was designed around the guys theme. This has been going on for 15+ years now. Haven't talked in a bit, but I hope he's doing well these days.

Yeah I think you've pretty much hit it right on the head. One of my first Zelda-like (sort of) games did the kid hero thing and the story just wouldn't have been the same as an older teen or an adult. I also liked the kid section of DQV more than the rest of the game too.

>>1269022 The enemy designs are great but for me it's that Termina feels like a real place. The worlds in other Zelda games, including OOT, just feel like hubs for a bunch of dungeons and adventure. Majora's Mask actually feels lived in, like you're getting a three day long microcosmic view of a place where people live and work and do things. It makes it easy to care about those people, and saving the world from destruction feels a lot more meaningful as a result. Also there's no Ganon which is a welcome change. >>1181797 Lmao.

>>1294733 >Majora's Mask actually feels lived in, like you're getting a three day long microcosmic view of a place where people live and work and do things. I still haven't played a game that captures the illusion of a living world as well. I think it's the relatively short amount of time that repeats that makes it so compelling to learn the NPC's schedules and alter them. It's scripted like a point-and-click adventure with the added dimension of time. Majora's Mask has hardly even been copied. It's cliche to call it a pinnacle of video game art but it kinda is. >>1235543 here u go
I'm still really miffed we don't have kid link with his transformation masks in smash. >>1294733 I read somewhere (I've searched "Ganon in Majoras Mask and gotten nowhere) that Ganondorf was supposed to be in Termina doing something benign, but was cut for one reason or another. I guess they either wanted to save Ganondorf as a character for other games and didn't want him to be "diminished" by sticking him somewhere random. Maybe it just clashed with what the pirates/Gerudo were up to.
>>1299496 Rapeable
>>1299829 It would have been cool to see Ganondorf as a shopkeeper or vagrant or something like that.

>>1254268 Keaton's just because it looks cool. If the bunny hood weren't so obviously useful I'd be wearing it all over the place. >>1152480 Has to be Tingle. My sister hated him, especially in Wind Waker, not only cause he was annoying but I'd add to it by bombing her with her own money with the Tingle Tuner when she was playing. It's slightly tough cause of the way it works. If you push the bomb button while the tuner icon is attached to link it's a countdown bomb to let him get out of the way, but if your icon is off of him it explodes instantly, so you need to move ahead of link a bit and wait for him to walk to you, then BAM! You can even blast him out of the boat with really good timing, though it's quite difficult there, cause the map's all zoomed out in the Great Sea.
>>1210043 I liked Link and Tatl's dynamic very much and there were plenty of great moments, but way too much was just edgy misery porn for its own sake. It's to the point that the original theme of bringing others happiness gets drowned out.
>>1138086 MM made a huge impression on a huge number of people (including me) with lots of modern developers listing it among their favorite games. (and so would I) I've never replayed it, never played it again since its original release. Suppose one of these days it ought to be something that needs to be done.
>>1301000 (Chkd) I know but it’d be interesting to see him as just a regular NPC. I guess it wouldn’t really make sense but if there was any game to do it in it would have been MM

>>1304141 It'd be funny if the game hyped up a rumor of a "single powerful male among the Gerudo..." just for that Gerudo to turn out to be Beedle who runs a little taveling shop in the middle of nowhere. Alas, he'd make his appearance a few years later.
>>1314613 Not to shit all over you but these games (meaning Zelda games) were definitely made for children in mind. When I was a kid (around 10 years old), the only reason I didn't finish Ocarina of Time after having it for more than 2 years was because I was stuck in Dodongo's Cavern, and it's not because I was stumped by the puzzles but I was genuinely afraid of the Lizafos enemies that you had to fight as mini bosses. Once I got over that, I was able to beat the games no problem. Kids are fucking stupid though so maybe there are kids out there who were unable to figure out where to go and what to do.
Do you guys think Nintendo would ever dare revisiting Termina/Majora's Mask for a sequel, or is it simply too niche and unique to succeed outside of a standalone game beyond references in later installments?
>>1314720 Kids usually asked friends if they got stuck. It's also how rumours like "truck mewtwo" spread around.
>>1314812 Never going to happen. Every game needs to be set in hyrule. Every game needs ganon and zelda and the master sword. They're brand icons.
>>1314992 Huh, come to think of it, Majora's Mask was the last Zelda game not set in Hyrule, wasn't it?
>>1315226 >>1316684 I am forgotten.
>>1316718 And that's not even the last one since Spirit Tracks is set in the same world.
>>1299829 Some fragments of evidence suggest at one point in development Ganondorf and Sheik were going to run the fishing minigames, in the 3ds remake at least https://tcrf.net/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Majora's_Mask_3D#Ganondorf_and_Sheik
>>1316718 Until you posted that I did completely forget this game existed yes. >>1317248 Phantom hourglass at least has the virtue of being an okayish game. My copy of spirit tracks lays forgotten in a bin somewhere, uncompleted, and there it will stay.
>>1339645 You should give it a try. Spirit Tracks is overall better than Phantom Hourglass.
