Am I crazy or do the PS3 games and the Kiwami games have a completely different feel to them I dont know if its the lighting or what Obviously the PS2 games are COMPLETELY different but the 3-5 and Kiwami 1&2 are supposed to be pretty similar
(548.12 KB 1280x1280 Emil_Pag_HS.png)

>>1138644 >Replaying 3 on Legend
>>1138644 You're retarded, is what you are. Yakuza 3 released in 2009, Kiwami 1 released in 2016. Yakuza 3,4 and Dead Souls are all on the same version of the same engine, Yakuza 5 is on the Upgraded version of that engine, so was Yakuza 0 and Kiwami 1. Kiwami 2 is on the Dragon engine, an entirely different thing altogether. If you couldn't tell there was an engine difference going from Yakuza 3 and 4, to Yakuza 5 and 0, then you aren't very observant in the Subtleties of the games you are playing.
>>1138644 Of course they’re different. Yakuza 1-5 were made for actual Yakuza fans. 0 brought in all the secondaries and redditors. The soul really started being sucked out once Kiwami 2 happened. I don’t consider the Like a Dragon games to be a part of the same series. Ichiban and his fans are all faggots.

Heeey, Boy!
>>1140010 why did they make him so strange looking its like hes wearing white face or something
(1.06 MB 1742x980 station.png)

>>1140233 Modelling white people from scratch with no face scan isn't really something it was important for them to learn until Infinite Wealth.
>>1138644 >and Kiwami 1&2 are supposed to be pretty similar 3 and 5 are meant to continue after 1 and 2, while Kiwami 1 and 2 are meant to continue after Zero. They're made with completely different ideas, and trying to tie them together beyond being all Yakoozzi gayms is dumb
(2.92 MB 1280x540 wide kiryu.webm)

>>1138686 >Komaki moves that make light work of blockuza enemies locked behind chapter 6 would not be so bad otherwise. irrelevant but was the Majima game any good?
(1.54 MB 1920x1080 dumb.png)

>>1140432 >irrelevant but was the Majima game any good? It's pretty good. I'd probably put it somewhere in the middle of a series ranking.
>>1138644 ok serious talk, I want to get into this series, get the feel for kabukicho with plenty of fanservice and hostess bars whats the best game to start it off? Do the older games have current day remakes, and which are console or PC available?
I never finished Lost Judgement because I really hated Yagami and Kaito, also Yakuza burnout I guess but I've been thinking about giving it another go. Do people actually really like them and I'm the weird one here?
(38.29 KB 686x386 yagami.jpg)

>>1141009 I find Yagami charming in an odd way. He's supposed to be this cool guy since he's played by a famous dude in Japan, but none of that translates over to here, so to me he's just a fucking weirdo wearing skinny jeans in his 40s (he's supposed to be in his mid 30s, but I don't buy it). Kaito is okay. He's really just Diet Saejima. I liked the twist his DLC took with the final boss.
>>1139468 >0 brought in all the secondaries and redditors. I was always wondering how to describe 0 and later games, this really perfectly nailed it. 5 will be the last Yakuza game to me, although I really loved 6 despite how unfinished everything felt. >I don’t consider the Like a Dragon games to be a part of the same series. Same. I don't like Ichiban, gameplay is fucking trash. Why I love Yakuza games so much is there's no other game like it, basically a fighting game with a ridiculous story but still grounded in reality. LaD took both out of the series, why the FUCK would anyone enjoy watching turn based fighting? Cmon man, gtfo with that faggot shit for weebs. Also Judgement games, idk, I really don't care about Yagami nor Kaito? They really feel like Sega milking Yakuza IP to the max.
>>1140971 The remakes aren't that faithful and 2's is far worse than the original. Go in release order and you'll get a good sense of how the series as well as Kamurocho has progressed over time. Here's a good mod guide too. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1veZGNEN6KTmn4TNVircGAoaN8JRPL9uV3HY2W88JBF4/edit?gid=0#gid=0 >>1141009 LJ has the best combat in the series and really great side stuff.
>>1140971 I'm of the minority opinion that you should play the PS2 original games. 1 is a bit rough but it's really unique for the time. 2 is actually peak Yakuza. You can then go through 3,4, and 5 steam ports. Maybe play 0 after that. 0 and Kiwami 1 are okay, but it's full of fan service despite playing better than OG 1. Kiwami 2 is actual shit except for the hostess game.
(2.66 MB 498x463 majima-dance.gif)

>>1140432 >irrelevant but was the Majima game any good? Combat feel might be my favorite in the series just because of how fast and fluid it feels. I dig Honolulu but i kinda wish they included Kamurocho.
>>1141077 ngl i feel like they could've aged down Yagami into mid 20s range and it'd likely have worked better.
Was anyone else pissed that they got rid of the mangas at the convenience store? Now what am I supposed to do when I get shit faced on Kakubin?
>>1141222 >>1141227 pic related, now clarify for an idiot, is kiwami 1 and 2 somewhat of a remake or are they completely different things from OG 1 and 2? also, really wanted to try and play them fully in japanese, how hard of a level should I be to dive in while still understand enough of the story? Any big differences between the japenese and localized versions?
>>1147063 They are very faithful remakes but modernized with new game engine and bling. If you just want to play Yakuza, play the remakes. If you want to experience Yakuza, play all games, both og and remakes, the way they were released. >Any big differences between the japenese and localized versions? There are some in earlier installments but I think there are zero differences up until 0, only a few differences and they're very minor.
>>1147113 >there are zero differences up until 0 I wanted to write after 0, not up until.
>>1141222 Thanks for the link, I'm a bit curious but any of those links in the top include the full game? like if 1 and 2 are PS2 only, are the links the roms already? >>1147113 like for example in the sheet, it appears to have quite a lot of licensed/censored content from the modern games?
>>1147165 I didn't check the sheet, I just played the games. >it appears to have quite a lot of licensed/censored content from the modern games Mostly song licenses, Japanese games always had an intro with some famous band. If you're playing on PS3, those games in the West had some cut content and weird localization but not in Japanese version.
>>1139468 oh so now we gonna praise 5 despite its shitty ending, haruka being an utter failure, a dumb fake-out with kiryu (to their credits it's the first game where he actually ACTS LIKE A HUMAN BEING), Saejima having OOC moments or the general shitting on 4's ending?
(13.46 KB 380x298 ballsout.jpg)

>>1147235 >haruka being an utter failure Kiryu thinking of himself as a good and caring dad when in reality he just let Haruka do whatever the fuck, never encouraging her to go through with what she started. She always left a fucking mess in every game she appeared in, just being associated with Kiryu puts her in the crosshairs. I mean Kiryu come the fuck on, either go balls out or stay away (which is the premise of 5 and the ending of 6). All in all, Haruka is fucking stupid and fuck her stupid idol arc.
I like Ichiban and I'm tired of pretending I don't
>>1147063 1 is closer but it's more of a sequel to 0 and the plot has changed accordingly. The hostess stuff is very different too since they started getting the same group of real JAV actors later on. 2 is even worse with this as there was an entire host minigame cut out. An entire location was cut too and the engine was just changed at its time which made it really bad. >also, really wanted to try and play them fully in japanese, how hard of a level should I be to dive in while still understand enough of the story? I can only base this on my impression with the Japanese only game Kenzan, but I think N3 would be good enough to get most things. >Any big differences between the japenese and localized versions? It depends on the entry, but if you don't want any hint of localizer cancer, it's worth it to play Japanese. Little meanings and phrasing get changed all the time.
(30.50 KB 478x642 yakuza5yume.jpg)

>>1147235 You're be surprised, but there's people that are genuinely defending the MUH YUME last boss...
>>1147712 >1 is closer but >2 is even worse You mean Kiwami compared to the OGs right? >group of real JAV actors later on what do you mean here? what for? >there was an entire host minigame cut out really? I watched a bit of someone playing it and really seemed like the managing a hostess club part was there >>1147209 Yeah, I'm gonna be moving to Japan in a few months, so waiting to buy them in japanese is an option, tho I could just start with the ROMs for 1 and 2
>>1148326 >You mean Kiwami compared to the OGs right? Yes. >what do you mean here? The characters and dialogue are all different. >managing a hostess club No, Kiryu becomes a host himself in a cabaret club for women. The manager minigame is copypasted from 0 as a replacement. https://youtu.be/d7s41N16GCM?si=1VXiOVH9GZAvk1qE&t=1409
Picrel is also a thing if you're gonna play on PS3 and in Japanese only. You don't have to worry about anything censored in Japanese versions of any installments then.
>>1147352 she "suffers" the same problem Kiryu has. Kiryu thinks himself as worthless meaning he's gonna go all out for other peoples dreams, but said people will love him so much for that they will sacrifice themselves for him to "return the favor" fueling his sense of worthlessness. Kiryu has never raised Haruka telling her she was nothing and he never actually hindered someone save for Daigo, which is weirldy half-admitted by the writers but not so much that it would upset the status quo. So Haruka had 0 excuse to just throw everyone's efforts away: I get the message that she doesn't feel any shame about Kiryu's status as a yakuza but it's still a dumb and dangerous move to say you love Al Capon on live TV no matter how deserving he is. >>1147467 7's combat system was clunky but it felt like an actual passing of the torch with Gaiden giving him and the yaluza of old a last Hurrah. Shame the nips can't let go of Kiryu. I can bet they gonna milk him until the VA croaks
>>1147956 I dare say I liked him as the final boss being a parallel to haruka. And him being durable as fuck could simply be a Kiryu having lost a lot of blood
>>1147352 I think Kiryu's relationship with Haruka oddly peaks with Dead Souls. She gets kidnapped and he's ready to go scorched earth to get her back. Cashes in his connections with the Tojo to do shit like bust through the quarantine wall and casually walks past the police guarding it, basically daring them to try and stop him.
>>1153458 He’s also a parallel to Nishiki too. They even reused one of his QTEs in K1.
(75.54 KB 1920x1080 Beta Yagami.png)

>>1141077 Do you think the beta design would of been better? It still kinda looks weird to me, like he's a tried hard.
>>1157915 He looks like he sells crack to high schoolers, no wonder they face-scanned that male idol.
>>1157915 he looks strangely more attractive than the idol guy, just change the hair.
>>1148408 You said group of JAV actors surely you mean group of voice actors?
>>1160324 No, they get literal JAV actors face-scanned as hostesses like Anri and Ai.
>>1138644 Let me guess. You played the games in the wrong order, and played kiwami (which came out years after 3) first.
>>1147956 He's carried hard by how good his music and the one billion well animated QTE's in his fight. Some autists are also severe theme fags and like that he fits 5's themes i guess.
(2.38 MB 1920x1080 sleepy_shinada.png)

>>1168419 You have to be big on thematic elements to enjoy 5's story. On the surface level, it's total fucking garbage outside of Shinada's story, and even that peaks at the end of his chapter with nothing left for him in the finale.
Why are Yakuza and DMC threads deleted?
>>1168419 Meanwhile the chad Mole in judgment is carried by good music,QTE and a good twist at the end
(1.41 MB 2160x3729 1704789831374073.jpg)

>>1170185 I miss Shinada. He'd unironically be a great pick for either a party member in an Ichiban game or a major character in a Judgment game if they themed it around another pro sports conspiracy. Weird to think he shares a VA with Sephiroth.
>>1140971 Yakuza 0. Chronologically the first game and by far the prettiest gsme in the series. I can't comment on the post-Kiwami games as they haven't been cracked yet.
>>1171611 So you're so poor you can't buy the collection for 20 dollars
>>1174489 Yes. I'd rather choose to eat for 5 days than waste money on games.
>>1170185 Shinada fighting Baba for practically no reason is kino though. His pals at home calling him after is great too.
>>1170185 The most I'll say is Haruka being retarded is a part of the point and Kiryu tanking as much as he did without dropping until the credits was insanely cool.

Happy Ueno Seiwa Day.

(2.91 MB 1152x648 suicide.webm)

am curious how many people unironically believe Kuwana was in the right: the dude was a rabbid dog who got offended when he discovered his students didn't really respect him. Yagami did more by pretending to be a teacher than him his entire career, and while "muh sawa-sensei" is memed it's a valid point because sooner or later he'll have to dispose of people refusing to let his methods slide. What's your opinion on him?
>>1206271 Yagami was completely right. I guess it's the execution that's to blame. It would have been better if he didn't use that rationale as a crutch for half the game and had a better written villain to play off of.
(324.17 KB 1920x1080 downloadfile(11).jpg)

>>1206271 I'd back Kuwana if he was a pure solo act. His blackmailing people into being accomplises and getting grieving parents in vulnerable emotional states involved in his work is where I'd draw the line. Yagami's central argument when confronting Kuwana is that he's indirectly responsible for Sawa's death. If Kuwana was just a ghost of a man and didn't leave so many loose ends by bringing other people into it, she probably would've been fine.
I originally skipped the first two games and now I'm thinking about going back to them. Does anyone have experience with the undub patch? Is it worth using?
(246.29 KB 800x800 Dragon of Sunnyvale.jpg)

>>1217285 I'd call the patch essential unless you REALLY think listening to a silly 00s dub with gratuitous swearing won't get old by the end of it. It also touches up the script and restores the proper names of characters and locations that they didn't use until Yakuza 4, so definitely go for it.
>>1220703 rare instance that only watching is a good recommendation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH4EJPIwwT8
(208.69 KB 1079x1079 10 years in the ring.jpg)

>>1170185 I want a Shinada only game focused on the seedier side of baseball and gambling. Obviously will never happen now that they’ve dropped the gritty neo noir elements and are now just pandering to Redditors with their lol japan so wacky games.
(660.02 KB 2160x3840 shinada offer.jpg)

>>1221328 I thought Gaiden had a very tasteful balance of the gritty elements and the silly stuff. I'd definitely play a Shinada game, especially if they flesh out his fighting style so it's more smooth to use.
>>1206271 Most of his defenders just pivot to the “muh sawa-sensei” meme (not a meme, Yagami was right to bring it up.) None of them are actually interested in having an honest discussion.
>>1221348 Yeah, Gaiden is probably my favorite game they’ve released recently. I still think they’re moving away from alt of the elements that got me into this series with the Ichiban games. Maybe they’d have to put Shinada in a Judgment game to continue his story, as another anon said. But would the reddit secondaries even bother with a game like that? It seems like they have very different expectations from what a Yakuza game should be. Its popularity has been both a blessing and a curse.
(1.53 MB 2050x1080 sawa.png)

>>1140971 I want to try again. I remember playing Yakuza on the PS2 and it was a lot of "japanese humor". Years later I tried 0 and got 30 hours in before I got tired of the "japanese humor". This series just might not be for me.
>>1252209 >Japanese humor As opposed to what? Can you give me some examples of your idea of oh-so-superior Western humor?
>>1252813 Plenty of anime and Japanese media is funny. Yakuza's humor seems so out of left field and just straight up unfunny and misplaced
>>1252209 They're completely different beasts. Yakuza 1 humor is <The cabaret floozy I fell for left me, time to kms! <OH GOD I'M GETTING SHIT EVERYWHERE YOU GOTTA GET ME THOSE POCKET TISSUES THAT KEEP FILLING UP YOUR INVENTORY AND ANNOY THE FUCK OUT OF YOU Yakuza 0 humor is >lol here's a chicken for bowling a turkey >ha ha eyepatch guy sings a girly song
>>1253285 Absurdism isn't something exclusive to Japan you know.

>yfw a good game becomes a fucking fantastic game due to one mod https://www.nexusmods.com/likeadragoninfinitewealth/mods/336 I hated when they started the turn-based yakuza shit with 7 but this mod genuinely makes 8 more fun to play because brings back regular yakuza gameplay. No more turn based crap, everything is in realtime, and if you combine it with this mod... https://www.nexusmods.com/likeadragoninfinitewealth/mods/327 You can customize who is in your party and who the leader is. >>1267685 Been working my way through the games. Started with 0 awhile back, and finished Yakuza Kiwami 2 the other day. It's been real fun. I'm on 3 now, and I missed the 'classic' combat. The dragon engine combat in Kiwami 2 felt pretty rough, in that my options felt really limited. Back to the engine before that and Kiryu feels like a well oiled machine again. I installed a couple of mods because apparently the PC port has fps issues, in that the FPS controls game logic (very common it seems) and they didn't adjust game logic for 60 FPS. Quickstep still feels like shit regardless of mods, though that might be because I haven't leveled Kiryu that much.
>>1267685 Really cool mod, gotta try it
>>1275247 soon you gonna play 4's kino. I think the dragon engine only started to be bearable with Judgment, too bad they doubled down on juggling with LJ and Gaiden
>>1261894 Whatever the fuck label you want to put on it, the humor in Yakuza is unfunny

>>1267685 Been playing through Yakuza 7 recently. I played through the Kiryu saga a few years back and stopped after 6, partially because of burnout and partially because I wasn't sure how good RGG would handle the switch to turn based combat. I've been liking it more than I thought I would and the story is really solid (on chapter 11 so far). Combat feels a little barebones but given that it's inspired by Dragon Quest, I guess that's part of the appeal. I just wish there was a little more depth in the battles like being able to move for positioning moves. I've been spoiled by Kiseki combat which is the gold standard for turn-based JRPGs imo.
