>The controls were horrible
they are completely fine and can even be considered superior to our current standard control scheme since the game can be played entirely with just one hand on the keyboard
>The strength progression was way too easy to cheese
>Money and 99% of items became worthless the second I realized I could just beat up merchants for all of their stock
don't intentionally cheese the game and then complain that it feels like ass to play
>NPC AI was retarded in the original meaning of the word
In what way? To me it had always been fascinating that they had a daily routine and reacted to player inputs like rushing over to you to tell you to fuck off when you enter their house, it took 5 years until Oblivion to recreate these mechanics and they still ended up not being nearly as immersive as in Gothic
the combat AI isn't perfect but it can still pose some challenge to the player and they don't bug out all that often
>The game doesn't let you explore on your own—everything is locked behind a quest
That is a complete lie, you are free to explore almost the entire world right from the start, what is keeping you away from exploring the areas of the map before the developers intend you to are stronger enemies, that's a fairly standard practice for most RPGs and it works quite well in this case, of course some areas of the map are inaccesible until you get a prerequisite quest for them, but again that's not exactly exlusive to Gothic
>It had the most annoying fetch quests that led you going back to the same places over and over again, etc. etc.
can't deny that, but there are plenty of other positive things to be said about the game that vastly outweight it's negatives
