You gotta find yourself a community to play it with if you really wanna feel like you're making a difference in the war effort, but plenty of units are fine with recruiting complete newbies. If you're fortunate they'll also actually show you what to do per some in-game bootcamp they've got set up.

Played it a long time ago, before a lot of the major updates. I enjoyed it, but I'm generally okay with grinding supportive tasks. If you want to be a lone wolf one man army you'll get burnt out real quick, the game and community doesn't really facilitate that playstyle. If you enjoy cooperating with others and aiming for long term goals you'll get more out of it. It's also a pretty big time sink, not something you pick up and play for short play sessions.
