City Building thread Anonymous 05/18/2025 (Sun) 12:21:18 Id: b47cde No. 1374722
Hello folks, I've been out of the loop for a while, any news on the city building front? Last good thing I've played probably was W&R, nothing else comes close to it imo, in terms of how satisfying actually planning and building turns out, even though I think the game lacks some balance.
some pics of my last play I guess

I have said this before and I'll say it until the end of time or until Sweden is taxed to the ground but it still makes me sour as shit that Minecraft has such a piss-poor town/city mechanic, instead of something more along the lines of Terraria or even its own mods like Millenaire. So much creative freedom and all for some of the ugliest fucking messes a sad intern at Mojang whipped up in an afternoon's worth of work, inhabited by some of the ugliest and annoying creatures designed by human hands. Look at what you could have had, Mine man, and weep.

>>1374842 >minecraft nigger no! not everything has to be minecraft while on topic tho, Manorlords was a decent village builder too, even tho in EA hell
>>1375182 Is it abandonware at this point?
>>1375277 It just released last year in EA, and has been receiving updates. I don't see how it could possibly be abandonware.
>>1375277 definitely not, but only god knows when it will actually be fully released tho even in its current state I'd say its fairly fun/chill medieval village builder
>>1374722 So what's the best simcity in your opinion anons?
I hate how little freedom most city builders give you in, y'know, building a city. Cities Skylines was really great because of that but it's Paradox and borderline aids without a ton of dlc and mods. Has anyone played the second one since it's come out? How does it compare to the first?
>>1382531 I was right there, in the hype train when CSL first launched had my fill of the fun, but to say >I hate how little freedom most city builders give you in, y'know, building a city. Cities Skylines was really great because of that Can't say I get what you mean, what type of freedom? In the end I just realized it was a very shallow city painter without much depth to it, and really lackluster until the several DLC added value to it
>>1375934 Tropico 4. It is just 3 with more stuff.
>>1397659 What I mean is a lot of city builders don't allow as much freedom in customizing assets and placing things where you'd like them to go instead of on a grid, something that CS excelled at. Those are the things I feel really make a city feel like it's something you've made, and not just one of a few thousand permutations that could exist. A lot of city builders operate on a grid-like board for practicality but I feel like it's still a bit of a holdover from earlier games that restricts freedom in design. Funny you call it a "city painter," despite its shortcomings that's probably how I'd describe why I like it. There definitely has to be a better balance between depth and aesthetics though. Townscaper is another little game I love messing around with but is solely visual, there aren't any real mechanics beyond just making something that looks nice. Like, if this sort of thing had an economy and zoning and specific districts and features for buildings I'd consider it an all time classic.
>>1375182 >few months without a word >expect an update maybe this month or early next >comes out and says he will need a lot of time itching to play it again but I've basically done everything there is in it
>>1411589 I has just bought this on that last sale, at least felt like a lot has changed since I've played it the first time > tfw time just flies when you wage slave away
Has anyone else played either Foundation or Kingdoms and Castles? I like both of them from the first few dozen hours I played them, but Foundation definitely fell off in terms of interest since it became a grind of getting enough resources to actually keep building stuff once my town became sizeable enough to need more than a couple resources. Lots of freedom in customizing your buildings like churches and castles, sure, but still very demanding in terms of resources and needing your populace to be happy before anything significant can really be done. Kingdoms and Castles has been way easier to jump back into every couple of months by virtue of being way more arcade-y. Like a year or two ago the devs added AI kingdoms to contend with on maps you generated, which actually provides some sort of incentive to force you towards productivity or at the least making some stuff worth trading. Shame you can't romance anyone yet... Fun every once in a while, but a little basic as far as city/kingdom builders are concerned. As far as I know though both games are still getting worked on, so at least there's improvement on the horizon for both of them.
