Got around to playing Sonic Colors DS, Generations DS, and Lost World 3DS recently. I'm not a huge fan of the Advance/Rush style gameplay, and that's what Colors and Generations are, but they're alright. I definitely didn't like either as much as Rush Adventure, but I liked them better than Rush 1, and maybe about on par with the Advance games.
Lost World is really cool. I guess I just like 3D platformers more than 2D, but the 3DS game compares very well with the Wii U game. It's weird that they made a whole other game that's so similar but just has different level designs. Both 3D platformers with the same mechanics and level themes, not to mention story (including cutscenes), but they bothered to make wholly different levels. And I like those levels. Lost World Wii U is one of my less liked mainline console Sonic games, but I still like it better than a lot of the handheld spinoffs, and I like the 3DS version about as much as the Wii U version. HOWEVER, the Special Stages were completely fucked by mandatory motion controls. I really like them otherwise, it's a really fun idea for a Special Stage, but you have to be able to move 360 degrees in order to play them properly, which means you have to stand up or maybe sit in a swivel chair. The closest you can get to a workaround is to pause, move your console in the opposite direction, unpause, and then continue moving it in the direction you actually want to turn. That obviously is not a good option. But aside from that, the Special Stages are really fun, so it's a shame this sort of ruined them.
I also beat Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin recently. Fun game, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Dawn of Sorrow. Sisters Mode and Richter Mode both aren't nearly as cool as Julius Mode, and I don't think I enjoyed the portrait gimmick very much. Theoretically it would allow for linear classic style Castlevania levels in a Symphony style game, but they didn't really do that. The portrait levels were still mostly exploration based, or at least not linear enough to really give that classic feel. I heard Order of Ecclesia goes more in this direction, so I'll have to check it out and see if they do it better. But first I have to beat Curse of Darkness on PS2. It's the only one I skipped because I hated Lament of Innocence, but now I feel bad that I skipped it so I'll go back to it before moving on to the next game.
