Playing videogames in public Anonymous 08/04/2025 (Mon) 17:48:22 Id: d4fc58 No. 1630644
>"Waaaah! People will make fun of me if I play video games in public!" Why are 4chan schizos like that? Playing video games in public has been a thing since the creation of video games with the arcades games and later with the handheld lcd games like the Game&Watch ones and then with portable consoles like Game Boy. Besides with lots of obnoxious, annoying people in public like niggers, illegals, gypsies, loud Karen, normies who talk loudly at their phones etc, nobody will give a shit about a person who plays games quietly in a corner with his phone or portable console.
Edited last time by Wardog1 on 08/04/2025 (Mon) 18:47:18.
>>1630644 Caring for what people think about playing your videogames in public is gay, but I feel like retards don't even make fun of that anymore because people just walk around with electronics in their hand all the time nowadays anyway What is a steam deck or switch in a world where everyone walks around with phones?
>>1630644 >Doro >normies >>>/gacha/
I'm more worried about someone stealing my handheld while I'm playing it, like some lunchtime rowdy will run by and swipe it so he can pawn it off for drugs.

>>1630724 >What is a steam deck or switch in a world where everyone walks around with phones? A target of theft? Brilliant idea making these "portable" consoles so fuck huge that they won't fit in your pockets, forcing you to carry them around in gay little purses or in your backpack where they are easy targets for niggers to snatch and scram. Vita was the last true portable console that could fit comfortably in your jacket pocket or jeans and had a battery life longer than 15 minutes.
>>1630995 Theft is a concern, but I was talking about the social shame
>>1630995 That's why I put my vita in a 50 pound bag that I carry with me everywhere, filled with useless garbage that will confuse thieves who try and rummage through it. I also put the vita in a cushioned storage container, to prevent damage to the sticks and screen. Let's see some disenfranchised future astronaut try to rob me.
>>1630644 I can't comfortably play BrownDust2 in public, and camera shutter noises on phones aren't mandatory in America. I and may other people who want to play games in public could easily become laughingstocks.
>>1630644 I used to always play my vita in public despite all the nintendo and Xbox fanboy fags yelling at me for playing on a "dead pony system". Sadly however my vita has been suffering many hardware faults all at once which has been exhausting to repair because that fucking rear touch screen cable. First my right analog stick broke (replaced), battery dried up (replaced), sd2vita died (replaced), new right analog stick breaks (hasn't been replaced), SD card corrupts after 5 years finally (replaced), front touchscreen randomly stops taking inputs (not replaced), and now its starting to randomly power off at any power level. I'm not sure what to do at this point, so I bought a cheap Chinese handheld called an R36S to hold me by while I decide what to do.

I cannot focus on vidya in public, or at least in an outdoor setting, it's just not possible.
>>1631354 Damn. That sucks to hear. As a fellow vita owner, my heart goes out to you, the damn thing is nice but it feels fragile, so I pray mine doesn't break.
>>1631418 Considering manga piracy outweighs comic book sales, Stan was wrong on this one.
>>1631972 Not really, it is a different experience, Stan didnt factor in that the comic industry could go full retard and let tumblr bitches run the asylum because muh current year.
>>1632020 It wasn't just that, Disney didn't give a shit about comics since they're such a small market (despite the fucktons of merchandising they built from a loyal fanbase that popularized it worldwide) and they want short term fuckhuge profits with their shitty movies. Comics are to give their useless investors kids jobs as nepobabies. I'm honestly glad, capeshit is a fucking cancer, literally never good outside the rare graphic novel by an actual talent working contract.

>>1631972 >>1632020 Let's look at something comparable such as manga sales in Japan. According to this article https://archive.ph/60N6F, last year 70% of manga sales were digital. Yes, such sales did rise during the lockdowns, but it's been years since then, and people still prefer digital. I guess that while a phyiscial manga might feel nice in one's hands, the convenience of instantly having a manga on a device, with just a few clicks on a website app, is a much better experience than ordering it, and waiting for it to be delivered, or going out to a shop to buy it. On the other hand, https://archive.ph/ZamnH print books still out-sell ebooks 4 to 1, at least in America, and 68% of young readers, so between 18 and 29, prefer print books. Printed books, outsell e-books in a lot of other countries like Canada, Germany, France and even Japan, so maybe there is some allure to a book that a manga does not have. I wish, I could find data on light novel sales in Japan, to see if physical also outsell digital.
>>1632157 Imo book reading is a bit more "pompous" and "serious" than manga, so those who like lit are most likely to enjoy real books. Manga readers don't care and just want their fix
>>1631337 You're joking but when it comes to protecting a Vita, no measure is too extreme.
>>1631354 Update, I got the R36S in the mail, and it ended up being a clone which is shit. Started a return and now I gotta wait for it to get back to get my money back. Maybe this was a sign that I need to stick to fixing my vita even if its extremely fucked right now.
>>1630995 Clam shell handhelds were always better designed for portable use. An exposed screen and analog sticks isn't.
(17.23 MB 1554x1174 Vita-tan's eulogy .mp4)

>>1632157 Its infuriating that nips are letting their manga magazines die imo, plus print manga volumes too. Eventually they won't own manga at all and it'll be controlled by corps on a subscription basis because they traded their ownership rights and valuable property for convenience (like we did in the west for so many things). Hopefully they course-correct on that. >>1631354 >>1632459 Props to you for working so hard to keep your Vita alive and for playing it in public, but damn that's a lot of problems. You don't have a backup Vita? After a certain point all those repair costs presumably add up to being more than the cost of another Vita. You might have to retire her (but I hope you can still fix her). I'm terrified of the day when my Vita starts having problems as I'm the exact opposite of handy. I might end up buying some broken ones as practice to see if I can restore them to working condition when I have the spare cash to do so. >>1632503 >Clam shell handhelds were always better designed for portable use Nah, the hinges are another point for failure, as anyone with a DS can tell you. Also, Nintendo's build quality in general for their handheld consoles have always been pretty shitty, and that's coming from someone who owns far too many of each of them (save for the original gameboy and GBC). Owned 2 GBAs, a DS lite, a DSi, and 3 or 4 fucking 3DSes. Getting a Vita was by far the best gaming purchase I have ever made. >exposed screen Anyone with a brain uses screen protectors on their Vita, and an OLED screen is far better for outdoor use than a shitty low-brightness LCD. >analog sticks Fair, but I use a case if possible when I'm carrying it in my pocket, and I'd rather have an analog stick than a paper-thin circle pad which gets destroyed after playing Super Smash Bros for a few weeks.
>>1632157 I think most people default to reading (pirating) manga digitally first for convenience's sake, and then buy the physical copies only if they really liked the series. Buying physical manga before finding out if you like that series or not is considered a bad investment of money and shelf space, it seems. Also, the reason why physical books are still selling well is probably, depressingly enough, because people (women) on social media have turned books into pretentious fashion item and/or interior decor you collect massive amount, while not actually reading anything (except smuts), to appear smart and cultured. The nightmarish amalgamation of vapidity and consumerism that is booktok (book + tiktok) is well-despised by genuine book nerds all across the internet (who are also mostly women) (I don't that many men read books nowadays)
(79.18 KB 1280x720 the vore goblin.jpg)

>>1632189 I could see how a lot of people, even Japanese see a lot of manga as being disposable, but not so for books. Or that it looks better to have a bookshelf filled with books, or even light novels, instead of just manga. >>1632998 From what I know japanese don't pirate as much, as us westerners, plus we have the excuse of "Oh there is no official release, and I don't know moonrunes, so I have no choice but to pirate, but fuck scanlators for dropping a manga, when it gets official support". What the average japanese can do to read manga for free, is that some manga websites like comic-days.com , manga-one.com and comic-walker.com offer the first few issues for free, as well as the latest two or free issues. So in theory, a japanese could pick up a manga, and read it entirely on weekly/monthly installments for free, but he can only do this with new manga, not old one. Now even in this case, it does not count as a purchase, as he doesn't need an account or anything else to access them, but as you said it's a matter of convenience. Once he already is using a platform to get his latest manga for free, he might as well buy the author's older works. Then there is also the issue of reprinting older works, as it might be easier/cheaper for him to buy the entire collection of let's say, Hellsign, digitally, instead of buying it physically from the second hand market. On your second point, I think blaming it all on women is a bit unfair, as men have done the same thing for more than a century, as having a large personal library, as you said, made someone appear to be smart. I remember when a jewtuber called Vee inherited an apartment from his since or some other relative, and started streaming from his uncle's living room that hosed all sorts of books, just to appear cultured/smart even if the only literature he ever read was vore related.
>>1630644 Because they're teenagers and young adults. They still care too much what others think and seek validation from an invisible crowd. The Quentin memes are probably still taken seriously to this day. Meanwhile, most of us here are old men warning warning and as you get older, you just stop caring about what the imaginary peers think
>>1631972 I'd rather hold a physical book, manga, comic, whatever kind you want to call it, in my hands. However, piracy is free and easy. So I'll take my slightly less preferred option due to it saving me money. Stan is still right. You might prefer one format over another but still have other factors that impact what you actually do.
>>1631972 >Considering manga piracy outweighs comic book sales, Stan was wrong on this one. if i am parting with money i want a book i can hold if it's free digital is fine.
>>1630724 Caring for what people think about you in general is gay, period.
>>1633033 >>1632998 You know, whenever I see someone giving an interview on TV with a wall of bookshelves behind them I wonder if they have ever read all of them I have not played all my games on my steam library, but at least I don't proudly display it either
>>1633056 >Meanwhile, most of us here are old men warning warning and as you get older, you just stop caring about what the imaginary peers think when is this supposed to happen? I'm 26 and I haven't changed at all since I was a teenager. I'm still insecure and care about what others thing and still sensitive about how others think about me I never went through any of these age developments that people always talk about. what the fuck is going on? My life is the same at 26 it was at 12.
>>1653833 I think it's about reaching milestones that change your life. I'm older than you and haven't reached any important milestones, so I still feel the same as when I was 12, except now I am acutely aware of the milestones I haven't reached, and yearn for them. This only makes me more insecure, not less.
>>1653854 I think those "milestones" are bullshit post-war 20th century concepts that never existed prior, and now millennials and zoomers don't reach those fake milestones either. trouble is that adults don't really exist anymore. millennials and zoomers are just kids in adult bodies.
>>1653862 People got married and/or had kids before WWII, anon. At a certain point you realize time is running out.
>>1653833 >>1653862 Start exercising and get some T And stop taking shit from your parents
>>1653867 true but a lot of fake "milestones" like muh high school crush are fake post-war crap that said. I already game up. if my life is the same at 26 that it was at 12, it's not going to be any different at 35. and no woman will ever love me. >>1653869 but it's supposed to an age thing no? that means by a certain age number you automatically act a certain age? and I can't not be with my parents. too expensive to live alone
(195.11 KB 404x603 pwned.png)

>>1653872 >but it's supposed to an age thing no? >that means by a certain age number you automatically act a certain age? Yes, but plenty of people here don't get that click once they're 16-18 because they're not only co-dependent with their parents but likely also abused in some way or another. >and I can't not be with my parents. too expensive to live alone It's not about being with your parents or not, it's about not being pushed around by them or their expectations of you. You can still be a good son without falling for every emotional trick they use on you. This is also not about resentment either most do it without thinking, likely a byproduct of being abused themselves It's about finding your own way, and that means disagreeing with your parents on core issues. The reason so many millenialls live with their parents is because said parents are overbearing neurotic egomaniacs, it's a boomer thing.
>>1653833 >I'm still insecure and care about what others thing and still sensitive about how others think about me admitting is the first step. next step is wondering why it supposedly matters.
>>1654195 it does matter because if people have a negative perception of you, you are ostracized from society and cannot make friends or get into a relationship or any social activities.

>>1654211 >Oh no, some stranger saw me in public playing VIDEO GAMES, now I'll never be invited to the ice cream social!
>>1654218 take a look at all the people who had their lives ruined for saying something wrong and not "fitting in". Shiloh Hendrix comes to mind.
>>1654232 She seems pretty well off now to me.
>>1654246 yeah but if she DIDN'T have that luck, like 99/9% of us? she'd be ruined.
>play a GBA emulator on phone Nobody would ever care or really notice. If it's something bulky and obvious then maybe, but it might also depend on how old the console is. Someone pulling out a Game Boy, weird but interesting. A 3DS, it's got good titles so fair enough. A DS specifically though? Why would you use that when you have better alternatives? Unless you playing vidya in public somehow draws attention, most people will probably be on their phones, not really caring.
>>1654232 There's a huge difference between playing video games in public and lashing out at a nigger for bullying your child. Let me tell you a little secret. most people just want to move on with life and blend in with the background, they're not looking for trouble. everyone's on their phones doing whatever it is they do. You work, pay your taxes and do whatever, no one is going to stop you as long as you're not being a nuisance or a threat.
>>1654276 >You work, pay your taxes and do whatever, no one is going to stop you as long as you're not being a nuisance or a threat. I don't know, dude. we live in a day and age where ANYTHING can and will be used against you and nothing is off the table.
>>1654322 You're failing to seeing the forest for the trees. It's like not wanting to go to the beach because you're scared of a shark attack thanks to reading so much about shark attacks and watching Jaws. Learn to live life, the only thing you should fear is fear itself.
Most of the time people play shit games and are rightfully ashamed to play it in public. Playing "uwuuuuuu japanese high school dating sim kawaii desu uguuuuuuuu" is cringe faggot shit and you should be laughed at. If you play chess or an age approrpiate game then who cares? Just don't play gay games and/or kid games as a 40 year old man and you're fine.
>>1630644 Same reason why I avoid the slot machine part of casinos... or casinos in general.
>>1653887 >The reason so many millenialls live with their parents is because said parents are overbearing neurotic egomaniacs, it's a boomer thing. Oh it's got nothing to do with having to play a gauntlet with resumes and certifications, none of which the boomers and gen x had to comply with btw when securing their 6 figure pay check. I have siblings and relatives working their asses off and they're still unable to fucking pay rent right now. Professional positions. Death to old people.
>playing on a phone You look like any other smartphone zombie on the street, nobody will notice. But for gachaniggers like faggot OP, the day of the rope will come. >playing on a portable console Is like wearing clown makeup. My friend made fun of me for using my steam deck in public, so next time we went out I made sure to download Hyperdimension Neptunia and played it at full volume so he would be associated with the guy blasting sexual anime noises from his bing bing wahoo machine. >>1668561 From what you've described, you were upset enough at a friendly banter (of course the Steam Deck is thick as hell) to transform it into some kind of public humiliation out of revenge Yeah no wonder the guy wouldn't trust such an autist who blow things out of proportion.

>>1669818 >you are upset over the guy coming back with a mildly different old joke More like flabbergasted that anon thought blasting (embarrassing) sounds at high volume in public was remotely a good idea, and in retaliation of what could have been a mere light joke from his friend for previously bringing a Steam Deck. I don't think it was worth losing friends for this kind of stunt but whatever
>all these people biting the obvious bait You either own a Steam Deck or you have friends, you never have both.
>>1666357 The steam deck IS stupid though, I'm not even talking about appearances but it's like you're holding a food tray with joysticks. I'm still assblasted the Vita failed, now everything is designed as being a weapon that you could use to bludgeon someone to death with. Might as well just weld a screen and battery onto an actual console and hold it in your hands, it'll be a "handheld". >>1669818 >how is playing anime moans any different of a prank than playing porn moans? How is playing moans or porn a prank at all? That's just kind of weird.

>>1670067 >>1666357 No wonder you guys don't have friends lol. You seem like an absolute joy to be around.
>>1671333 They never said they didn't have friends.
>>1669987 >Might as well just weld a screen and battery onto an actual console and hold it in your hands, it'll be a "handheld". Behold! The Gamecube prototype. Makes sense when you read about how they were trying to make the Gamecube as portable of a game console as possible, from it's box-shape to it's handle to carry it easy from one room to another One thing I would like to know, is where this whole "if it doesn't fit in your pocket, it's not a portable game console" discussion came from. I have seen it for years, maybe even a decade, but just thought of it as Nintendo vs Sony shitposting, and shifting goalposts like "well at least it fits in cargo pants". PCs don't have this problem, nobody looks at a laptop and says, "it doesn't fit in my pocket so it's not a portable PC", they just carry it in a backpack or in a laptop bag. I always saw the SteamDeck as closer to a laptop than a Switch/Vita, so again, i don't understand this autism of "it's too big", like nigger, I've used 15.6 inch laptops, I don't see how a Deck is too big.
>>1671474 >I don't understand this autism >reveals he's even more autistic Nigger, you don't hold a laptop with your hands while you play on it. Moreover, a laptop was never viewed as an analog to handheld gaming devices. A laptop is a laptop, a handheld is a handheld. These devices are obviously closer to the latter and its immediately obvious to anyone with eyeballs. My goodness this thread attracts the biggest troglodytes on the board.
>>1671540 >Nigger, you don't hold a laptop with your hands while you play on it. Would you be fine with the distinction between a handheld and a portable game console? >Moreover, a laptop was never viewed as an analog to handheld gaming devices. Were Tower PCs viewed as an analog to home consoles? Will your answer be: "No, because a home console was generally hooked to a TV, while the Tower PC was generally hooked to a monitor."?
>>1671566 >Would you be fine with the distinction between a handheld and a portable game console? There was never a need for that until now because handheld consoles were both portable and handheld except in rare cases, and the rare cases were usually colossal failures that were forgotten about. (e.g. the Lynx or the Game Gear) >Were Tower PCs viewed as an analog to home consoles? Will your answer be: "No, because a home console was generally hooked to a TV, while the Tower PC was generally hooked to a monitor."? PCs are not consoles. It's literally in the name, dumbfuck. They are personal computers as opposed to video game consoles. Anyone with a brain knows that a laptop is just a portable computer with a slightly different default control scheme and downgraded hardware PCs were always meant to be general use, with video cards allowing them to handle a variety of additional activities that required the additional rendering power, including gaming. A console's OS, default control scheme, and hardware was generally custom-built for gaming alone, and maybe at most a few minor media features as time went on. That's why gaming PCs often required higher specs on-paper than a console to achieve the same results for a long time to compensate for the overhead that necessarily comes with being a general use machine. Nowadays, yes, there's less distinction between them because of how much more similar they are these days compared to the old days, and there was a weird period of time where they were vaguely akin to vidya consoles like the Commodore 64, but generally speaking this was the case throughout history. Either way, this is clearly irrelevant to the point. If you can't tell the difference between a console and a PC just by looking at them and their operation then you're beyond hopeless.
>>1671474 >One thing I would like to know, is where this whole "if it doesn't fit in your pocket, it's not a portable game console" discussion came from. ease of transport - there are breakpoints to size and it correlates with portability, if you can fit it in your pocket you can bring it almost everywhere, if you need a backpack to carry it around it limits the portability since you need something extra and if its a home console/tower pc you are certainly not lugging it around
