I could see how a lot of people, even Japanese see a lot of manga as being disposable, but not so for books. Or that it looks better to have a bookshelf filled with books, or even light novels, instead of just manga.

From what I know japanese don't pirate as much, as us westerners, plus we have the excuse of "Oh there is no official release, and I don't know moonrunes, so I have no choice but to pirate, but fuck scanlators for dropping a manga, when it gets official support". What the average japanese can do to read manga for free, is that some manga websites like comic-days.com , manga-one.com and comic-walker.com offer the first few issues for free, as well as the latest two or free issues. So in theory, a japanese could pick up a manga, and read it entirely on weekly/monthly installments for free, but he can only do this with new manga, not old one. Now even in this case, it does not count as a purchase, as he doesn't need an account or anything else to access them, but as you said it's a matter of convenience. Once he already is using a platform to get his latest manga for free, he might as well buy the author's older works. Then there is also the issue of reprinting older works, as it might be easier/cheaper for him to buy the entire collection of let's say, Hellsign, digitally, instead of buying it physically from the second hand market.
On your second point, I think blaming it all on
women is a bit unfair, as
men have done the same thing for more than a century, as having a large personal library, as you said, made someone appear to be smart. I remember when a jewtuber called
Vee inherited an apartment from his since or some other relative, and started streaming from his uncle's living room that hosed all sorts of books, just to appear cultured/smart even if the only literature he ever read was vore related.
