vidya with best audio design? Anonymous 08/24/2025 (Sun) 17:15:28 Id: 440e70 No. 1688664
What vidya out of all those you've played has had the best, most atmospheric/immersive audio design? I'm getting high quality headphones for the first time in my life and would like to test them out on some games. As of now, I've heard that most horror should have good audio, but I'm a colossal pussy so would prefer other genres. Apparently Metro 2033 and Last Light are good, as well as Red Orchestra. Is there anything else?
Thief: The Dark Project Disciples II: Dark Prophecy
>>1688664 I enjoyed STALKER, but gotta admit I realized about it while playing modpacks like Anomaly. Shilling this yt channel cause I like it https://www.youtube.com/@RadiostalkerMusic

Dead Space.
I don't have a list here or anything but unironically speaking, a ton of older games especially from the earlier 3D gens. Silent Hill and Resident Evil are probably the most famous out of those but the advent of higher quality sound recording and space for sounds themselves really helped to revolutionize the atmosphere you could convey through vidya. A lot of PlayStation and Dreamcast games do really well with sound design because of it.
>>1688664 Probably Dead Space or Alien Isolation, at least these are the ones where I remember paying attention to it.
>>1688664 Titanfall 1 and 2
System Shock 2

This bitching game
STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl, Doom 3, Dark Messiah Thief, System Shock 2, Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill 2/3. Outside the last, you can just mute the music and the ambient sounds just draw you in. Honorable mentions to Postal 2, Subnautica, Post Scriptum, Dead Space and Super Robot Wars Original Generation

Audio is such a huge part of Thief, you can hear at a distance where something is. I can't think of any other games to do this.
I remember The Alters' audio design really sticking out to me. The rapidium and QC especially.

>>1889328 Most stealth games I notice have some really good audio design. Playing through TLOU 1 and 2 you realize the game doesn't really needs its assisted listening mode if you have a decent set of speakers, because hearing clickers and the other zombies is really precise. Same with the callouts with the cultist whistles. Its one of the parts I enjoy most about the games honestly.
I remember people tried to praise Devil Daggers' audio design here years ago before any discussion of the game was drowned out with >ONE LEVEL >ONE WEAPON
>>1896995 I made the title edit of that meme. Devil Daggers was textbook FOTM, it was also one of the first games I can remember to adopt the faux PS1 look. I remember everybody trying to act like it was some unique and important game, now it's completely forgotten not ten years later. Please tell me somebody still has the image, I lost it years ago
