Classic fantasy. Anonymous 08/27/2025 (Wed) 21:05:39 Id: 8dbf79 No. 1698382
I have recently got this urge for classic fantasy. I mean the kind of sword and board that used to be everywhere. The kind of vibe that I am thinking of can be found in Heretic, There you are an elf shooting lightning at bad guys while flying around on wings of hatred. I think Golden axe has a similar vibe but a lot lighter. Gauntlet dark legacy has it as well. I guess Hexen has it as well being a sequel to heretic but I dont enjoy backtracking.
There's a pretty good slew of classic style fantasy games on the SNES and Genesis. Less common than the ever ubiquitous JRPG but still there. What would you consider "classic fantasy," though? As far as more modern stuff Dark Souls really nails the epic fantasy world and aesthetic in my mind, but other games like Legend of Grimrock and older RPGs like Gothic could still fall in that category but with a different tone.

>>1698575 >What would you consider "classic fantasy," though? I am mostly thinking about this specific style of sword and board fantasy that was popular in the 80s and 90. Most of my examples are just old warhammer art. Its this kinda over the top and ridiculous aesthetic that was more concerned with looking cool than making any sort of sense. Conan is a great example, big barbarian slicing his way through the castle of an evil wizard and his weird snake cult. I want to talk about pic number 1. It is actually one of my favourite pieces of warhammer art just because it makes me imagine. I see it and I start thinking of impossibly large towers. On the bottom dwells naught but goblins and orcs while the top houses chaos warriors, gargoyles and the evil wizard Morcar who commands them all. I hope all of this is getting across what I want, I am not really sure how else to explain it without just dumping a bunch of classic fantasy art and going "I like this, I want more".
>>1698616 They had the right idea about what to do with (((wizards))) TWD
>>1698616 >>1698382 I think you want something like Wizardry? You probably can't go wrong with other dungeon crawlers of the time and anything that bases itself off of D&D that also happens to be old, like the first Baldur's Gate maybe? >>1698575 Dark Souls is a very specific brand of dark fantasy and it still takes inspiration from the Japanese views of Western fantasy, so I don't think it's the same thing
>>1698616 I love Conan too, the feel of the art and stories are basically unmatched. Like the guy above me said though looking for stuff based off of D&D (or citing Conan or art like that as a direct inspiration) will probably be your best bet. >>1698644 Dark fantasy, light fantasy, low fantasy, high fantasy, how many kinds of fantasies are there anyway?
>>1698644 >Wizardry Heard a lot about Wizardry, Japan loves it. Which one would you recommend I start with? I am not sure how well I would do with those super old commodore games. >>1698663 >how many kinds of fantasies are there anyway? As many as you want! its fantasy after all.
>>1698663 >Dark fantasy, light fantasy, low fantasy, high fantasy, how many kinds of fantasies are there anyway? At some point or another it becomes like music genre autism, but urban fantasy, industrial fantasy and historical fantasy come to mind >>1698683 >Which one would you recommend I start with 6 into 7 and 8 if you don't mind some jank 8 is the most approachable, but you can also import your party from the two previous games Dark Messiah might be to your tastes too if you haven't played that one yet somehow
>>1698712 Rock Music specifically. I’m convinced they deliberately make up new genres for the meme at this point.
>>1698712 >industrial fantasy first time im hearing about this, is it similar to steampunk - as in medieval world and magic vs industrial revolution and technology?
(99.65 KB 480x320 The QUEST.jpg)

-Might&Magic -Wizardry -The Quest -Heroes of Might and Magic -Dark Messiah
>>1698801 I've always thought of it as more just fantasy but in a very industrialized setting. Like steampunk or diesel punk but with magic and some medieval tropes still present. The closest game equivalents I can think of to match that would be maybe Dishonored or even Oddworld.
(3.73 MB 960x540 1666668818770383.webm)

>>1698810 >Dark Messiah I really need to try picking up that game again.
>>1698801 >>1698815 Yeah it's a magic setting where society has undergone or is undergoing a industrial revolution Fantasy with heavy industrial elements
(60.28 KB 546x593 GODS.jpg)

Myth: The Fallen Lords, Warlords Battlecry, Disciples, Lands of Lore... Does "Gods" count? it's more of a greek thing but the design is closer to that of classic fantasy.
>>1698712 >>1698810 You know what I think I will try Wizardry. I think 6 might be a bit too old for me but ill try it anyway. >>1698953 I looked it up and apparently it had a remaster that is no longer available. Is that cover by Simon bisley? His art isn't exactly what I was thinking but it gets close to what I want.

>>1700766 Also give Heavy Metal Fakk 2 a try Fuck I miss stuff like that, how did we go from stuff like that to the absolute infantile corporate sanitation of today? >>1698863 ABOMINATION
Oh shit, almost forgot
Play TES 1.
Witchhaven 1 and 2 for all their jank for what you are looking for. A more recent example may be Elderborn as well.
(24.58 KB 287x347 rune.jpg)

Rune might be up your alley. LGR did a vid on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZXjKaioNl8
>>1707866 Shame we will never get fun hack n' slash games like Rune ever again because we live in the time-line where people pretend souls-likes are actually good.
>>1707940 >Shame we will never get fun hack n' slash games like Rune ever again Make one.
>>1707770 Kinda? its in the same ballpark but not really the thing I was aiming for. >>1707866 ALready played that years ago. Its good but its nordic themed setting. I know classic fantasy has a lot of random viking bits in it but in my mind there is a difference between that and a full on nordic setting.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning This is classic fantasy in every sense of the word, though the cover may say otherwise. Colorful forests, battling goblins and giant spiders, hanging out with elves and gnomes. Check out some gameplay vids.

>>1708512 >>1708521 I don't think you quite understand what OP is looking for
>>1708521 >>1708512 Another one that I have played before. Didn't really scream classic fantasy to me at the time. When thinking of Amalur I am more thinking about how in the 2000s they kept trying to make fantasy "cool". Like adding marilyn manson to a DA:O trailer. I miss that era.

>>1708841 Dark sun is my favourite D&D setting. I hope I actually get to play it someday.
>>1698382 Have you played a game called "Die by the Sword"? >>1708606 That takes me back I remember playing it with my friend on his C64. One match we played I only had 1 bar left then I decided to try the insta-kill decapitation move. Damn thing worked.
(7.57 MB 1280x720 hand_of_doom.webm)

TAL ETH IST ORT Hand of Doom is fun. Maybe not the classic fantasy kind you're looking for as it's far more satirical, and maybe you're more into the powerful warrior type, but it was kind of fun to play around it.
>>1708946 I laughed for a solid minute after he talked to him again. I'll give this a try for sure, thanks anon!
>>1698382 Odallus matches the Frazetta vibes but it's a slight bit too Berserk to fit the classic swords and sandals.

More art to inspire the imagination. first 3 are classic warhammer pics and the 4th and 5th are Boris Vallejo.

My DM, while we were talking about dragonfable and mechquest mentioned this game called Demise. has anyone else played it? Looks like what I am asking for.
Has anyone mentioned Arx Fatalis yet? It plays pretty similarly to Dark Messiah, mainly sword and board combat with a bunch of spells thrown in for variety and utility. Very close in tone and look to classic fantasy: MC is a strong, able-bodied man, the game has knights, castles, demons, magic, liches, hot monster women, giant spiders and monsters and goblins and trolls and stuff like that. Only main difference being it's set entirely underground due to the setting. Screenshots don't really do it justice so I'd recommend checking out a video for a better peek at the game: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=Valmsq_Ku90
>>1723375 Have played it before. Got pretty far in too until I realized the game REALLY wants you to play a battle mage. Then i got stuck. Should absolutely try it again.
>>1723597 Funny enough I also had the same experience. Really liked it but spread myself a little too thin in skills so started to hit a wall.
>>1723625 I think a lot of people had that experience. I would also like to have a moment of silence for the men who invested into archery. If only they knew what a terrible idea that would be.
>>1723375 Anyeone itching to go (back) into Arx Fatalis should note that it has it's own OpenMW equivalent in Arx Libertatis, which is what you should play on.
Bumping the thread with some Frank Frazetta art.
>>1723375 >It plays pretty similarly to Dark Messiah, There's a very good reason for that. Dark Messiah actually has several remnants of its origins internally (most obviously the names needed to spawn various weapons which often have names like "weapon_arx_short_sword") >>1725792 There's actually a major difference: OpenMW is reverse engineered and thus has several minor unintentional differences from the original (I recall one relatively recent one was what got the priority for spell effect visuals differed from the original engine. Not something that harm your experience, but not accurate to original). Most of which are very minor, but are ultimately the reason the project won't declare "1.0". Arx Fatalis had its source code released, so the source port is much more accurate. Doom/Quake is probably a better comparison

>no ultima underworld >no goldbox philistines the lot of you
>>1947317 Mark Mann is literally palirat.
>>1947317 I hate that the playstation version of ultima underworld has that inventory bugs that fucks you over.
>>1948033 What is the best version of ultima underworld? PC I assume.
>>1948405 Well if they fixed that bug in the ps version then it would be the best but as it stands yeah its the pc version. I remember hearing there's a patch that adds mouse look as well if you want that.
>>1948405 PC version plays perfectly fine by today's standards. Except maybe if it had a sort of keyring mechanic, that would be nice, but there aren't that many keys in the game. Other than that it actually feels quite modern. It even has some proto-wasd style controls instead of placing movement on the arrow keys like most games of the time. I was worried about the interface that I would constantly have to to click on the buttons to switch modes, but the game actually let's you do pretty much everything right in the game world using the mouse. You can for example right-click-drag a door to open it instead of clicking the button to first enter interaction mode.

(3.08 MB 3000x1152 AR-concept-Labyrinthian-2.jpg)

The first two Elder Scrolls games are very classic fantasy. Arena's concept art is absolutely fantastic, a lot of these were used as dungeon art. First pic is actually where the Imperial emblem came from.
>>1700871 I am trying to but it just aint working on my machine. Installer refuses to actually install the game.
>>1948938 Tried daggerfall. It was fun until I hit a brick wall. I wanted to like it but it feels like I have to look up a guide. But if I look up a guide I am going to destroy the game for myself.
>>1955044 DF has a bit of learning curve, what are you having trouble with? A big thing new players get caught out on is levelling, people bitch about Oblivion and Skyrim but TES levelling has always been bad. In DF you can easily end up underpowered if you're not "rerolling", i.e savescumming before levelling up to get optimal stats. A few bad rolls of low points and low +HP can gimp a character heavily. A tip? Critical strike is worthless, it's not programmed correctly.
>>1948938 God I wish we got to see those more classic fantasy designs realized in the TES world. >>1955433 Not him but the thing that fucked me over when I finally got around to really trying out Daggerfall was the dungeons. I know DF Unity has a simple dungeon option and I think I fucked myself over by not choosing that but I really wanted the authentic experience. They're probably the single worst part about the game imo considering how overly complex they can be and sometimes outright just fuck you over without the right spells (levitate, open, and recall).
>>1955468 You really need to use mark and recall for those dungeons, get it as soon as you can. Make liberal use of the dungeon map, it also reveals hidden doors if you pay attention. If a dungeon has portals you need to make mental notes and play mindfully, it's very easy to get confused about how to navigate otherwise.
>>1700871 someone shoulkd post FAKK 2 I can't find it on Gog repackage sites anymore.
>>1955534 Its not on GOG at all sadly. Would have made it easier for me if it was. https://www.myabandonware.com/game/heavy-metal-f-a-k-k-2-3kw >>1955433 The thing I got stuck on was the dungeon with a necromancer in it. You have to deliver a letter to him but soon as I enter I get stuck in a hole that you need levitate to get out of. Reloading a save I try a different hole and go up against 2 undead that I cannot beat for the life of me. The big dungeons are actually fine. I was stuck in one for hours trying to find a specific Giant I needed to kill and that was genuinely fun. Only bad part was trying to find the exit.
