Borderlands. Anonymous 09/12/2025 (Fri) 01:10:11 Id: 631e4a No. 1744035
I am confused by something /v/. I was surprised to find out that borderlands 4 was released but it has less than 4000 reviews as of me writing this. I think this is odd since I was entirely expecting normalfags to just eat it up like they ate up 3. So why aren't they? It might not seem related at all but I was under the impression that about 3-5% of gamers leave steam reviews. So having the numbers for a major triple AAA game be low baffles me a bit. I want it to be clear that I fucking hate gearbox and i have hated them since the second borderlands game. For some reason people pretend like borderlands 2 is good for whatever reason. So I am quite a bit happy that Gearbox is flopping but I am still confused why. The quality of a game doesn't matter at all to sales so I am ruling that out. Was there a controversy before hand? That usually doesn't matter either but maybe some people were more pissed than usual? Maybe people are just distracted by everything else going on right now. That could be a factor but I am not sure if that is enough to explain how little this game is selling. Maybe I am to quick to jump to conclusions and the game will sell really well tomorrow? Please help me out here /v/. Also the pestilent defiler is the best gun.

>>1744035 Been years since the last entry and now even normies have had enough of AAA's bullshit.
>>1744112 No but she can have my penis any time of day
Borderlands 3 was a pretty critical disappointment. I don't have sales numbers or anything on hand, but the combined fact that it was originally only available on the Epic Launcher for its release and the fact the game sucked (even a few of my normalfag friends admitted they stopped playing it halfway through) probably left a sour taste in the average gaymer's mouth. You can bully me for this but there are also a significant number of video essays by YouTube channels that second that sentiment of it not living up to BL2. Combine all of that with the impressively negative reputation Randy Pitchford and Gearbox have grown over the past decade and it's not that surprising to see BL4 doing so poorly. Also there's been almost no advertising for it that I've seen, so I'm not sure a lot of people even know it came out. I'm actually curious, now... Hey you, random Anon reading this. Did you even know Borderlands 4 was being made? Do you even know what it's about?
>>1744196 Might have heard it in passing and my reaction to it might have been "why are they making another one of these?", but I did not remember of its existence until now
>>1744196 No advertising as well as not having the innate word of mouth from the last entry being good made it about as well-marketed as store-brand items.
>>1744196 Knew it was in dev but had no clue it was out until I saw it mentioned on some other forum. HATED base 3 story with the passion of a thousand suns and was mixed on gameplay but thought the first three DLCs were good especially bounty of blood being a return to the space western feel the game should have. Moze was also a pretty fun character and more of a straight man to the game's bullshit, plus being an explosive focused mech operator was fun even before she got buffed to the moon. As for 4, all I know is it's cyberpunk bullshit and completely abandoning the space western stuff. So I'm out. That and the atrocity that was Tiny Tina's wonderlands doubling down on base 3's issues inspired negative confidence.
>>1744196 >Did you even know Borderlands 4 was being made? Maybe in the vague idea, that all games have a sequel getting worked on, like how I am sure there is a COD game getting worked on, but I have no idea what it will be about. As for Borderlands, I haven't played any of the games, so even if I had heard of it, I wouldn't have bothered keeping tabs on the game. The last thing I heard about the franchise, was the failed movie, which I also haven't seen, with the exception of some clips.
>>1744196 Yes, but only realzed it was coming out because of a mention it was releasing in the same launch window as Onirism.
>>1744196 I heard murmurs, but didn't realize it came out until I passed by an advertisement display for it when I was grocery shopping one evening. tbh, I liked base Borderlands 1. The endgame drops off, but it's otherwise a cozy little loot adventure with sidequests. I thought the Tanis recordings sidequests were especially neat, being able to hear this woman's slow decent into madness, but she's lucid enough by the time you meet her to tell you to put a bullet in Steele for her. I could not finish 2 because the game constantly gatekept progression to dialogue audio and it never shut up.
>>1744082 Luminyu is a genius.
>>1744196 >red text Yeah normalfags mentioning it was why I was aware. >Do you even know what it's about? No. I only ever played the first one.
>>1744200 >>1744325 >>1744724 >>1744753 >>1745225 >>1745570 >>1746712 Okay, so I wasn't the only one and it really has just been incredibly under-advertised. I myself was only aware it was getting made because of a video I watched like a year ago, and it was completely absent from my mind until a friend launched it in Steam. Oddly, it seems like it's had an incredibly "successful" launch but we all know that means jack shit compared to player retention and actual sales numbers. Plus being sold on Steam makes me wonder how many copies Gearbox was forced to refund due to the platform's policy. Reviews also seem mixed due to performance and technical issues because of course a AAA game has those at launch. https://archive.is/l3Wx4
>>1744035 >>1746686 I would personally kill every person in the state of Idaho to spend one night with Moxxxie.
>>1746762 What happened to the Epic store?
>>1746840 Do you mean for this game or in general? Epic kind of gave up trying to make it happen. From 2020 - 2023 they saw little growth, and third-party sales actually declined in 2024. Their MAUs peaked in 2023 and third-party revenue peaked in 2022. Games Market did a breakdown of EGS' stats, and it's dire. https://archive.ph/BDh8I By the way, that 2022 peak? $355,000,000. For all third-party sales, for the whole year. That is absolutely awful for the ambitions Epic had, that's about as much money as Fortnite earns per month. GOG pulls about $55,000,000 in annual revenue, and they're a niche platform for retro games. There was a unsurpassable mountain between where EGS was and where Steam is, and Timmy seemed to have realized they couldn't climb it.
>>1746840 Gamer Girls got to it
I've actually replayed 1 and am trying to painfully get through 2 just to say I've done it The only faults with 1 are >areas are all the same shit >not enough unique guns and not enough variety in uniques >skill trees are too bland >can't really farm stuff well until DLC3 To attempt to mitigate what I hated about 2 I've done the following >JP voices >modded game with BLassic which restores BL1 scaling and drop rates (as well as a few things like BL1 balanced revolvers and mashers, also a handful of hybrids) and another mod that restores weapon proficiencies >only play shorts bursts when I feel like it >limit grind to "am I having fun" amounts It's sorta working, the JP voices makes the game kinda weird but it sorta works in a weird way always Maya / Gaige panting while sprinting makes my dick hard with JP voices >>1744035 >Also the pestilent defiler is the best gun. >>1744196 I remember seeing it on some game awards show. I don't recall which one. It didn't look like a Borderlands game and I was so disinterested in the series after the horrible but salvageable story of 3. Something the trailers for 4 failed to do that I think is kind of indicative of their failings is that they don't introduce the characters names during the trailer. Knowing who you are going to play as in the game kind of helps sell a game. Borderlands 1 did it best when the trailer not only introduced the characters, but gave a little who they are i.e. Brick as himself. 2 just introduced their names, but they did give the subtitles in the opening cut-scene, but IIRC they showed part of the opening cut-scene at a game awards show before the game came out. I swear to god they release part of the opening cut scene at some kind of event and it included the characters subtitles but I cannot for the life of me find evidence so that may be a false memory. With 3 they revealed it at the E3 2019 trailer with their subtitles. So that helps with getting a feel for who you are going to be playing as. With 4 >Cinematic Launch trailer No characters names are mentioned >Borderlands 4 Official Story trailer No character names are given >Official First Look Names not given >Official Teaser Trailer No characters even show This is a pretty major failing of marketing. Who am I supposed to play as?
>>1752011 For fuck's sake Randy, you probably paid top dollar for that USB stick of minors peeing, but when it comes to a mask, suddenly you're poor?
>>1752177 As bad as 3 was, I do like FL4K, even if just for his design.
>>1752177 >Who am I supposed to play as? You're supposed to get involved in hte marketing campaign and seek the individual character presentations as well as the youtuber shilling pre release gaming footage.
>>1752024 A few.
>>1746928 Does that BLassic have the pestilant defiler? Or double anarchies?
Why hasn't any other studio made a looter shooter that's on par with BL1 yet? Seems like it'd be such an easy thing to copy even for a AA or indie studio, and I'm sure people would pay gangbusters to play a BL-like not made by Randy.
>>1803029 There's 100 of them, pick one, they're all trash, including Borderlands.
>>1803170 Well no duh, if you think BL1 is trash then you'd say anything on par with it is trash too retard. I'm asking why hasn't anyone superceded BL or even just challenges their place when it's such an easy genre to copy while removing the cringe writing. Why are people still playing Borderlands when they could be playing Borderlands, but less shit?
>>1803029 Looter shooters are inherently trash. The only good RPG shooter period is New Vegas and 1: That game's shooting is crap 2: The gun loot is only interesting because it defies looter shooter conventions. Weapons (except some of the random low level melee stuff) all have some deliberate "purpose" instead of filling a gap, upgrades are always worse in some ways than their direct predecessor (such as not having a suppressor available, or having a lower capacity with longer reload making the DPS inferior even if the burst damage is way higher), there's deliberate gaps in progression (not every "tier" has a rifle, pistol, shotgun AND MG in it) and possibly prohibitive strength requirements to force swapping around weapon style, and there's actually a few ways to get pretty good results out of common gear with a well built character (take Grunt and Hand Loader and mid-game Marksman Carbine outdoes end-game weapons and even the early game and omnipresent Service Rifle will do pretty well).
Ever since playing the first game I maintain that an FPS with Diablo-style loot is retarded. After playing Nioh I realized it's retarded even in Diablo but Borderlands, Destiny, Division etc. are especially awful games made by morons.
>>1803387 Literally anything that includes diablo-like tiering of loot is retarded and objectively normalfag slop. It's an entire subsystem designed to hack your dopamine sensors into "rewarding" you with piece meal progression, so that you'll constantly be drip fed at least some aspect of progress even though you shouldn't be stuck grinding for shit like that in the first place. it's shit that was engineered by psychologists to FEEL fun but not actually BE fun. Literally all single player games would be better without item-rarity and artificial progression like that. Literally all of them. The only place where I can see this being applied and NOT being horrible is with cosmetics in multiplayer, but that's already a can of worms by itself. Fucking normalfags ruined video games, man.
>>1803481 >Diablo is a shitty game for normalfags I agree, and I am excited to see the shitstorm that will happen in this thread when other people notice you said this.
>>1804703 >>1803481 >>1803387 You're all retarded.

>>1804703 >(1) awarding a (1) >while being criticized by a (1) :^) Not really, if anybody compares BL to Diablo it suggests they haven't played either. Beyond loot, they have little in common; Diablo is structured around delving into procgen dungeons, collecting loot, and returning to town unload and make dosh; Borderlands is set around open zones you explore, talking to NPCs, clearing out quests and side-missions in designed areas, before progressing to the next zone. Money in BL games is functionally useless as vending machines virtually never have better gear than you and people often stop engaging with the loot mechanic at all besides "is this weapon better than mine?". If I were to compare it to anything, other FPSRPGs like STALKER or Deus Ex are closer in structure, but obviously that's also a terrible comparison because Borderlands isn't an immsim and doesn't share the same level design or multitude of approaches. What's bad about Borderlands is the strange floaty controls, awful writing, annoying characters, and flood of loot that's 90% worthless. I now expect you to play the entire quadrilogy , the remakes, and side games then compile your thoughts into a 150 page essay on why Randy Pitchford needs to be sent for off-world relocation.
>>1803481 Yes indeed. When I was a kid I've played Diablo I and II and I only cared about getting through the campaign with a playstyle that I've enjoyed and it was a blast but I didn't understand why my friends spend so much time playing the game on battlenet doing Bhaal runs over and over like hamsters. Most newer games are so riddled with dark patterns that you either willingly jump on the retard-treadmill or you don't even pirate that shit because you know exactly what it's going to be.
>>1805437 >awful writing, annoying characters opinion discarded, the NPC dialogue is what made the series fun, at least before 3 (we don't talk about 1.5)
(2.21 MB 960x720 Bordermemes.mp4)

>>1806943 >Anthony Burch actually posts here Hey Tone, eat a bullet!
>>1806943 >the NPC dialogue is what made the series fun no
>>1806943 The problem of annoying as fuck dialogue ruining the game started with the second game. The first game had some annoying dialogue but the second game was the unbearable one.
>>1806943 Wow, the one Burch fan on /v/. I will agree the writing in 3 is even worse. I could tolerate 2, but 3 was so bad even redditors were sharing guides on how to remove the dialogue. >>1806980 The funny thing? Memelands was by absolutely no means a common insult for the game, that's something you only heard on 4chan. Burch had to have been browsing /v/ and getting butthurt which means he also had to have seen the wall-to-wall cuck jokes. >>1806993 Okay to be completely fair, the context of that is when he kills a female character in-game. He also says something like "FEMINISM IS AWESOME". This is something I have heard second hand and am completely open to it being false
>>1807002 >"FEMINISM IS AWESOME" I think that one is from battleborn. Its ok to get that wrong though, no one remembers battleborn.
>>1806980 >>1806993 >>1807001 All i hear are squeaky noises from future meat bicycles. Squeak on niggers, it means nothing to me.
>>1807031 Burch, you should have made Clappy canonically gay and romancable.
>>1807006 I haven't played battleborn in over a decade at this point, how do you even remember this?
>>1804703 <Diablo is a shitty game for normalfags Because, looking back with 20/20 hindsight, it kind of is a really basic game. Yes, it's genre defining and yes it's fun, but you're not there for this tiered loot bullshit, yet that's pretty much the most important feature from Diablo that shitty normalfag games took from it and that's what I'm focusing on the most as a response to >>1803387. There's a fuck ton of games for normalfags where the design misses the forest for the trees and ends up implement tiered loot so that you'll end up focusing entirely on leveling and dropping bullshit shiny items as a distraction that you're playing a shitty game, which is 100% the case for Borderlands, for Destiny, even for that shitty Hogwarts game, it's ~le modern gaymurr design~ just like having a front-facing menu with items you can artificially fill in a feel good and a telltale sign that if a game has it, it's probably a really shitty game making up for itself using psychological tricks and is slop aimed at the lowest common denominator. >>1805437 You're right, agian, but this is why normalfags play this shit, they get hooked on through those psych tricks rather than enjoying the game itself, I've had a bunch of friends that would refuse or deride games that didn't have any open progression mechanics, because they really are addicted to the idea of being drip fed content, which is just abhorrent, and that's one of my biggest criticism for modern rogue-likes nowadays that force you to slog through their game to unlock the things that you would enjoy doing the most, rather than having it all unlocked from the get go and allow yourself to learn.
>>1807053 It was one of the few things that came out of it people kept memeing everywhere. Wait... >played battleborn Oh my God I'm so sorry.
>>1807053 >how do you even remember this? I dont know. I didn't even play it. I didn't think anyone actually played it. Did you actually anon? Why?
>>1807050 He'd have to be more of a dork and less of a bastard to be a viable robottom.
>>1807057 >>1807059 I got it for like 5 bucks and wanted to see what all the buzz was about, it wasn't good
>>1802762 >Does that BLassic have the pestilant defiler? Sadly no, but you can roll the masher acc. on other unique / legendaries which ends up having some pretty busted and funny combos. >Or double anarchies? It does have anarchy, not sure you can also roll double on top. >>1803029 There has been attempts and they all suck far worse than BL even, Destiny in particular I fail to understand how you can spend so much money to produce so much nothing.
>>1807050 >but what if even MORE gay???? Found the 1.5 enjoyer.
>>1807073 His bastardry could be brat play~ >>1807127 >There has been attempts and they all suck far worse than BL even, Destiny in particular I fail to understand how you can spend so much money to produce so much nothing. There are prolly some indie takes on Borderlands. The problem is indie games can be so obscure nobody on this board would know of them, I know I've asked here and elsewhere for game recommendations several times and gotten bad/no answers, but found a game matching my requests by happenstance. The average game on Steam sells less than 2000 copies, I've played some of those and they've been good! I've heard Mycopunk is like Borderlands, and it has cute bugs to boot. >>1807161 Never played it, in fact.
(129.63 KB 261x383 cyberpunk 1983.png)

>>1807191 >Mycopunk I wonder how Bruce Bethke feels about having such a direct influence on the English language?
>>1807055 Did I seriously just read an entire paragraph about game progression being bad? You could have just said "I only like pure sandbox games" and typed less. >>1807191 >Never played it, in fact Almost every new character is gay and they retconned 3 old characters to be bi (or gay). It's the exact kind of self-destructive hyper progressivism that infested the entire industry. 3 wasn't much better in this regard.
>>1807191 >There are prolly some indie takes on Borderlands. A lot less than you'd think and most either died or sucked, mostly because they don't have a fixed world but are short run roguelikes, granted doesn't mean they can't be fun, Mycopunk and Unyielder do look like decently fun games but it's not quite borderlands
>>1807031 Being a retarded cuckold won't bring your WiiU back.
>>1807191 >The average game on Steam sells less than 2000 copies Wow, that's shocking and a little sad but makes sense. And it's sort of inspiring in a way, it means even if most of them are trash there's always bound to be a few gems out there nobody's really discovered yet.
>>1807055 I just don't play any game with tiered loot, makes everything an RNG fucking chore.
>>1807191 >average game sells less than 2000 copies That's not a useful metric given the sheer number of games on Steam (and the fact that AAA games take the lion's share of sales) A more accurate metric would be what the median game makes.
>>1807001 Yes but the first game had awful gungplay so even if you're a rainbow loot faggot and don't mind most of the gameplay being inventory management there's still no decent entry in the entire series.
(52.70 KB 700x700 mfffww.jpg)

>>1808592 >Yes but the first game had awful gungplay How bout you stop trying to sex up the gungans you disgusting lowlife
>>1807006 There's a very similar line in Borderlands 2 though. In Tiny Tina's DnD ripoff DLC in the quest you get armor for Ellie, if you give her the full armor set instead of the battle bikini she exclaims "Yay feminism" or "hooray for feminism". I can see how someone could blur the two lines. I only remember this because I didn't want to see the fat fuck in a bikini and got flashbanged by that line instead.
