Today I want to talk about Cherino and her hair. Cherino's hair is a thigh-length, wavy white that then takes a slight blue tone at the bottom, like the change from snow to ice. She has her hair tied in twintails that goes down to her chest, likely meant more as an accessory than the main piece. Said twintails are tied with black ribbons that have little furry balls at the end, giving a slight cuteness to Cherino. Finally, Cherino is the only student that has a moustache, which is a reasonably sized piece for her, but also rounded and smooth, with points at the end. A sensible 'stache that really captures the power that Cherino has.
Cherino's hotspring outfit that definitely isn't a swimsuit outfit in disguise is simply what Cherino would look like with her hair in a natural state. The gradient in her hair is gone, suggesting that it was done to help the viewer differentiate between Cherino's hair and her coat, and since said coat isn't worn here, the gradient isn't needed. Cherino wears a headband likely meant to keep her hair from going all over the place in a hotspring. Finally, the moustache allows Cherino to hide her mouth and thus hide her emotional expression somewhat.
Cherino's qipao outfit is very confusing, because her hair has taken on a noticeably blue tint, which I'm almost certain was a similar issue with Tomoe's qipao outfit. This is made more obvious by the fact that the moustache is still a snowy white, which only adds to the mystery. Perhaps there's some scientific reason behind this where hair can subtly change when in different temperatures, or perhaps there's some strange unknown rule about the Mystic and being in a wildly different environment. Or maybe, just maybe, I'm overthinking it and there's some simpler answer I can't think of. Hair color notwithstanding, Cherino's hair has been tied into a braid with a hairpin holding said braid high, making Cherino fit in to the Shanhaijing environment. Her hair ends with a red hairband. The hairpin's an interesting accessory, with what I believe are strings meant to resemble gold, and flowers that I can't quite put my finger on (and today is the day that I'm tinkering with my computer so I can't look it up). The hairpin itself is likely a golden piece as well. It's also explained in a 4koma that this is not the first hairstyle Cherino wore, instead being closer to Tomoe's hairbuns, which was quickly changed after Genryumon thought Cherino was with her mother because of the similarities. It's a good way to explain why Cherino has the hairpin, too.
Before going into the outfits, Cherino's physical traits are pretty interesting in how they reflect her halo's icy appearance. Eyes like a frozen lake, hair like the snow that blankets Red Winter makes Cherino feel like she is the snow itself, come to rule with an iron fist!
Cherino's outfits are all white and red, with some yellow typically on metal pieces. Her backpack is red with a white moustache dangle on it. Her coat is white, but has red stripes on her sleeves and a red triangle on the right side of its center. Near the bottom of her coat are two red tabs(?), and the actual bottom of the coat is demonstrated with a line of fur. Her boots have red soles and are relatively simple, only having the same ribbons that are in her hair with fur on the top of them. Cherino's leg coverings are a break from the red and white, instead giving a sophisticated black, which then moves up into a hint of Cherino wearing what seems to be shorts? Certainly a unique choice, but possibly done so that way her body doesn't have a vent at the bottom that removes heat, as would be the case with a skirt. Back to her coat, a medal is on the center in a cog-shape, with the cog itself being white metal, and inside it is a red circle with a white snowflake in the middle. Attached to the medal is a red ribbon.
Cherino's hotspring jacket is a striped piece that alternates between pink and white, with the white having a thin pink stripe in the middle of it. On her left side is a series of medals, meant to show her authority when she's not wearing her hat and her moustache is mysteriously missing. It's also a good way to learn the entire title one should address Cherino with. The inside of her jacket is a red, coat-like style, probably familiar to her (as well as probably being very warm inside). The inner ends of the jacket are a bold black, with the Red Winter logo in gold, as well as some lines below the logo, either there for style or possibly spelling out Red Winter. Tied to Cherino is a red and gold-striped ribbon, adding to the very serious image that Cherino is showing. Then the white school swimsuit with Cherino's name on it proceeds to make the entire outfit look silly.
Cherino’s qipao itself is a relatively simple piece with red indicating where the fabric of the qipao ends and white everywhere else. Flowers adorn it, which seem to be a subtly different flower than what’s on her hairpin. The qipao holds itself to Cherino rather tightly, as her belly button can be seen as a subtle outline. Above the qipao is one of Cherino’s many coats, likely meant to be worn whenever she visits another academy, but that’s a rare thing for her to do due to her needing to put down constant purges. It’s very similar to her normal coat, albeit open and much shorter (and lighter). The medal is now on her right side, and the triangle is shown to likely be on both ends of her jacket.
Cherino’s hair is impeccably clean! To imply anything else would be a request to be purged! The question is if Tomoe helps with that or not, which, going by how much Tomoe assists with, is a real possibility. Cherino’s hair has a few imperfections, but we all have a few imperfections, so that’s not saying much. They probably come from Cherino’s very busy work running around the very large academy she runs. Something that doesn’t have an imperfection, though, is the moustache. It is a clean moustache, the cleanest moustache, and the smoothest hair in Kivotos!
