RIP Oatmeal-san Anonymous 10/16/2025 (Thu) 08:53:36 Id: e51bdd No. 1850821
ITAGAKI "HARADA-HARASSER" TOMONOBU DEAD AT 58 Picrel is the message he had a family member post from his FB account, after his death, it appears. MTL as follows: >The light of my life is about to run out. >The fact that this sentence has been posted means it's finally time. >I'm no longer in this world (this last post was sent by someone special to me). >My life has a series of battles, and we have stayed winning. >I've caused a lot of trouble. >I stand by my beliefs and I owe it. >No regrets. >I just feel so sorry to all my fans for not being able to deliver my new work. >Sorry. >It is what it is. So it goes."
>>1850821 RIP Thank you for creating the greatest action game of all time.
>>1850821 You are just trolling me anon, right... right?
Haven't played his games myself but still sucks that a notable dev dies before retirement age

The DoA babes are still iconic to this day because they're hot and the world is a lesser place without the man that wanted to push cheesecake onto fans of fighting games. RIP man, you will be missed and fuck Tecmo for screwing him over.
This is just depressing.

RIP Oatmeal cookie. Even though you never regained your footing after leaving Tecmo, you still created two of the best hack n' slash games ever made while you were as well as gifted the world some of the best waifus.
Oh, damn. Any word on how he died?
He was one of the realest motherfuckers in the Japanese video game industry. The one of the few that still had balls of steel when his contemporaries caved in to the false song of the "modern audience". Rest in peace, Itagaki-dono. You will be definitely missed.

This is some pretty awful news. If anyone wants to see what he's worked on, I've attached his mobygames list not including special thanks. If you haven't take the time to check out his work. Its very useful to also compare it to Tekken, Virtua Fighter, and other contemporaries to see what he did in Ninja Gaiden and DoA that was so exciting.

Are the DOA games actually good as fighting games? I always assumed people only played them to look at the girls.
How is devils third?
>>1851321 Yes, go play them right now >>1851323 Pretty shit Try out Wanted: Dead though, it's pretty decent
>>1851321 They are very casual games in a good way. Easy to pick up, pretty graphics, lots of content etc. The main reason why DOA6 bombed was not actually censoring of the tiddies (though it still played a huge part), but chasing after the hardcore e-sports crowd.
>>1851332 I hate how every game needs to chase competitive fags to stay relevant. It completely ruined FPS, RTS and Fightans, almost ruined racing games.
>>1851336 Yeah, esports is shit.
>>1851336 >almost ruined racing games. No it has as well, can't have any high profile title without enormous catering to esports fags, besides Forza but instead it turned to complete shit, otherwise yeah simcade / rally / hardcore sim are all tainted with that shit.
>>1851321 Yeah, DoA 5 is fantastic. go pirate it.

May he rest between thousand bobbies for all eternity. o7
It's a shame the industry pretty much cut all ties with him. He's the kind of guy who built this industry and gave players what they wanted. He loved women and vidya, and that's what he gave us: action packed, timeless entertainment. This is why I don't support the industry anymore and won't support it for the fuck of me. It's a husk of its former self, an industry hellbent on shaming the people who built it from the ground up. An industry obsessed with remaking perfection just to spite the fanbase and insert their propaganda. Fuck this industry. Mr. Itagaki will live forever in the hearts of all true gamers.
>>1851321 I had fun with them. They are much more casual. Gameplay wise 3/4 are very nice. 5 has the peak of many elements the series is known for. 1/2 are good but they are missing some of the additions 3-5 have added. 6 is good but 5 overall is more complete due to 6's lack of content. The Xtreme subseries is the same where the newest entry doesn't have many things the previous entry is known for, either due to budget cuts, or actively trying to add it later as paid DLC.

>>1851323 I've only played the game briefly, but it seemed to play fine for me. The only "real" complaints I've heard levy at the game basically boil down to the fact that it "feels" like it was released "too late". That it was still trying to a balls-to-the-wall classic action game in the vein of the first two Ninja Gaidens, from the late sixth and early seventh gen, when everyone else had already "moved passed" that phase. Just on the Wii U alone, it's following up the acts of 3RA, W101, and Bayo 2. So for a game to "regress" in terms of gameplay to a earlier phase threw a lot of shade and criticism on the game. Also, while that may sound "good" now, remember that this was LONG before companies just began straight up releasing remastered PS2 games.
The last video game rockstar, RIP.

>>1851960 Well, since I finally have a new PC, I guess now's the time to try out some Xbox emulation so I'll boot up some NGB this weekend. Also, goddamn Harada.
>>1852305 That whole twitter post was before Itagaki died. Just to be clear.
>>1851960 Coincidentally I was testing DOA3 emulation through xemu yesterday, it used to slowdown to a crawl in bigger stages and characters lacked specularity, but the development has progressed quite nicely and it runs more stable now. Good memories of beating the tag arcade mode with my older brother and being impressed by the unique team victory poses and grabs, it became our defacto game to play together at the start of every gaming session. I owe it to the man to boot it up one more time.

>>1850821 I wish Tecmo had not screwed him over or screwed over must of the original staff at Team Ninja. I loved Ninja Gaiden Black and I liked Ninja Gaiden for Xbox 360. That man had timeless wisdom.
>>1850821 >>1851960 A reminder for anyone who doesn't know. It actually is possible to play the DLC for NG2004 again. It requires using the Insignia, the fan made replacement for Xbox Live 1.0. The DLC required an Xbox Live connection to start a run, so until recently it was boarder line Lost Media, and now while it requires a bit of set up it's far more accessible than it's ever been for decades. The Hurricane Packs DLC are most relevant for The Intercept Technique, which is fairly similar in concept to a Royal Guard when you time a block on enemy impact. The move is fairly OP since there isn't much to stop you from just spamming block, and getting an Intercept, which is why it wasn't brought forward to NG Black. Still it's worth checking out to make a playthough of NG1 more novel. Once you make a save with the DLC you can load it without needing an online connection, so keeping one at the first save point is worth considering. Even without the DLC NG 2004 is worth a playthough even if you've played a bunch of NG Black, in some ways NG 2004 has it's own tricks up its sleeve, if you're too used to NG Black. The most remarkable part I feel is due to the being unable to charge a UT without essence in base NG2004, "that feature was actually added in the DLC along with the better camera control" when you get to the point you fight the Zombie enemies for the first time, they are actually far harder to fight without being able to charge a UT whenever you want. There is a real sense of dread having to fight so many of them, and that lasts until you reach the next Shop and you're now able to upgrade the Dragon Sword to Lv3, and then cut though the Zombies like butter, it's really cathartic, and that small journey was actually lost in NG Black. It goes to show, even if NG Black can be an objective improvement in plenty of ways, there is still value in the prior version. RIP Itagaki.
>>1852743 Good shit anon, thanks I'll give it a try
>>1850821 He was probably killed by the yakuza for gambling debt. >>1853864 Oh yeah, they carried on his legacy so much that they still refuse to port Black and NG2 over to PC, on top of 3 existing and now 4 basically being a fuck you to Ryu if leaks are to be believed. Fuck off you disingenuous cunts.
>>1851336 I don't think I entirely see what you mean by your comment, and I would much prefer this kind of discussion elsewhere in respect to Itagaki's memory, but what examples of older FPS / RTS / Fighting games are you thinking about when you imagine them as an example of "before" and "after" competitive catering?
(950.32 KB 813x900 95456565.jpg)

>>1853971 I don't know who that message is supposed to be directed at. Itagaki, DoA, and NG fans despise what Team Ninja has become, and I doubt they trust anything they have to say or release (NG 4). On the other side, you have the "new fans" who despise Itagaki and what his philosophy toward gaming and design was."
>>1853976 Not that anon, but I miss when Soul Calibur had robust single player modes. Then they got rid of them because they figured fighting games are only meant to be multiplayer anyway. Soul Calibur III had this awesome RTS mode where you could take control of individual units and play the fights yourself. It was awesome. Then IV had online, so it didn't have anything like that, and V barely had any content at all. And tourneyfags rejoiced, because according to them III sucked anyway because they didn't care about any of the cool shit it did. Even the Chronicles of the Sword mode from II (and simpler equivalents from I and Soul Edge) stopped showing up, because tourneyfags don't care, so therefore it's wasted effort, even though they're the most fun thing if you're a normal person who just wants to sit in your room and play video games, instead of going to some gay club to suffocate on sweat fumes and talk about molesting children. Oh wait, that's Smash Bros., but those Meleefags are the worst example anyway. I want Subspace Emissary back.
>>1854079 I feel like cutting single-player content in favor of stronger online focus is a general trend as games get larger, at least with FPS.

>>1854079 I'm 100% behind you. I loved fighting games and played them profusely, alone or with school friends when they were over. Since developers started catering to tournifags exclusively, they ditched any and all effort to have a good presentation and a variety of modes. Back then, from the title to the mode select screen had charm and a lot of effort was put behind it. Instead of having the 3D models when selecting a character, it would be a drawn version or a concept art design, making it pop out and distinguish itself from other games.
>>1854079 >>1854178 I see. I suppose that makes sense. I wouldn't blame only competitive fags in this aspect, as this kind of simplification and disregard for novel experiences is more something that has to do with the fact that normalfags hate different things and love the gray, corporate blob of modernism. >>1854087 Yeah, this too is a problem. Notably, developing for a multiplayer game is much simpler as well because the game is more focused in being a vertical slice of features rather than a wide aggregate of several different features and areas, which is also why corporate loves it. Most likely to get positive returns if they manage to find the space.
>>1853971 >they still refuse to port Black and NG2 over to PC I'm not sure about the original NG2, but I've heard before the source code to Black was lost. Can you still make a port at that point? That could have been a lie I heard though. >being a fuck you to Ryu if leaks are to be believed What do the leaks say?
>>1853864 Would it look worse if they didn't say anything at all. The timing right when NG4 is leaking out couldn't have been worse >>1855396 While not exactly humiliated, Ryu is barely playable in story mode since he canonically has only 4 missions in it, only slightly more than the female chapters in the previous games. You can replay the rest of the game's 15 or so chapters with him though after beating it. Yakumo gets the Dark Dragon Sword at the end of the game which has Ryu's moveset too, making him feel really redundant aside from things like exclusive Ninpo abilities. It's currently unknown as to how many weapons he'll get in the Two Masters DLC coming next year
>>1853971 >creator of iconic series dies >this isn't enough to stop fags port begging within days of his death You have one of the severest cases of autism on this board, and that's saying something.
>>1850821 F >>1850963 Are there other devs like him that still give a fuck about making sexy bitches?
>>1855418 >multiple characters I haven't really been keeping up with any updates of the game. I just assumed you'd be Ryu all the way through. I was sort of hoping for MGR Ninja Gaiden Edition just because it was Platinum. Which already changes the formula a bit but I thought that might have been better given it's Platinum. Even though it seems all the people who even started it left. Changing it to "actually you only play Ryu sometimes" is bullshit. Should just be called a spinoff at this point.
>>1855418 they're really trying to make the title of the franchise make sense this time.
>>1855457 Who is begging? they released a "master collection" with the versions he had barely anything to do with and actively dismissed when asked about them and then shadow dropped a remake which was based on the inferior version of 2. I can play Black via Xemu whenever I wish, does not take away from the fact Team Ninja have done everything in their power to bury Itagaki and what he did over a grudge they still clearly hold.
>>1855418 >Yakumo gets the Dark Dragon Sword at the end of the game which has Ryu's moveset too, making him feel really redundan Not even Dante was treated like this when he was being "retired" by Nero. At least Dante and Vergil have kept their own moves and unique gameplay. Giving the emo twink Ryu's move set and a reskinned Dragon Sword is Team Ninja looking into the camera and giving a middle finger to Itagaki and long time fans.
>>1855748 Gaiden as in side story eh? Probably thought people would be sensitive with any big departures in style and story after 3 so they crafted a new character that would fit their ideas more. >>1855755 The Tecmo higher ups at least, I imagine they're not fond of him at all, but I wonder how the rank and file members like Hayashi and Yasuda feel about him since they didn't leave to join his Valhalla studio. I hear Ninja Gaiden 2 specifically had audio issues among other things in Xenia as it performs even worse than Black in emulation. Regardless, with so many people mourning him, to say nothing with a brand new game in a big series he used to work on would have soured people from buying something they bothered to shell out money for. Then again, Microsoft is publishing it-I don't know how big their involvement is otherwise.
(269.56 KB 3840x2159 ninja-gaiden-2-xbox-one_0.jpg)

This is depressing. >>1855777 (Great full house!) >I wonder how the rank and file members like Hayashi and Yasuda feel about him since they didn't leave to join his Valhalla studio Fumiko Yasuda has never said anything about Itagaki. At best he'll glaze DoA & Ninja Gaiden as the studios foundation, but then there'll be times where he spits on Itagaki's philosophy behind the games, such as wanting to make the Ninja Gaiden games 'easier to play' & making Ryu Hayabusa a 'relatable protagonist'. He's also worn the WEF pin at one point. That should tell you enough about him & the direction he's taken TN. Yosuke Hayashi, Itagaki's successor after the 2008 firing, has acknowledged Itagaki. Interview: Team Ninja Boss Yosuke Hayashi (2009) https://archive.li/M2lF7 https://archive.li/1Kkam https://archive.li/jMiqv Hayashi, the new leader of Team Ninja, has boldly stepped into the office formerly occupied by Tomonobu Itagaki, someone whose pantomime Kikizo has long been a fan of (and we must admit, a party to, when you consider he's sat down for interviews with us no less than six times). I've seen people literally trembling as they enter an interview room with Itagaki, and then watched them leave looking like they want to cry. But while we always smile at Itagaki's character where many fear it, the bottom line is it's his games - and particularly the Ninja Gaiden series - that we're actually fans of. And the games gave him his pass to say whatever he likes. So, are these awesome games Itagaki's, or Team Ninja's? The answer from Hayashi-san may come as no surprise, but other details in our first interview with the new 'man' of Team Ninja may well do. The interview focuses on broader stuff before looking at Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, the PS3-exclusive remake of last year's brilliant Xbox 360 game Ninja Gaiden II, as well as other stuff. >Kikizo: With Itagaki-san no longer at Team Ninja, we wonder if it must be a lot, um, 'quieter' at the studio? <Hayashi: Well Itagaki liked to talk a lot! Me, I hope I don't have to talk so much. I believe my games will speak for themselves. >Kikizo: But in the eyes of many gamers, Team Ninja's franchises are seen as Itagaki's own rather than Team Ninja's. He pushed them as his creations, so how does today's Team Ninja feel about that? <Hayashi: Well games are team efforts. A person can have his vision and be a creative force, but in the end, it's a team effort. I think that the DNA, or the essence of the foundation of Team Ninja has not changed at all, and the internal staff hasn't really changed either. It's not like we're a different team, it's just that that the face and the leadership has changed. <As an example, most of my staff working on finishing up Sigma 2 has also worked on Ninja Gaiden 2, so it's not like we're giving it to a completely different part of the team. We also have a strong desire to work on something completely brand new, but which still holds true to the Team Ninja DNA. >Kikizo: What about other Team Ninja projects which Itagaki had for a long time mentioned, but as yet never materialized, like Code Cronus and Project Progressive? <Hayashi: I think the mission that we've been given as game creators and content providers is that we don't do it just because it's a business, we do it because it will provide entertainment to our fans. It's not just something that applies to Ninja Gaiden, or any of our other franchises, and it is my duty to continue things in this direction - it's the role I've been given, and it's what fits my talent best. >... >Kikizo: Itagaki-san had previously said that Ninja Gaiden II would be the final game in the series. Do you think you will go back on that and make a Ninja Gaiden 3 and beyond? <Hayashi: Regardless of what Itagaki-san said before, in time, what the consumers, the gamers are looking for is going to be the next chapter - the future of an outstanding series. We feel that we're in a position of being able to make that call, and to provide pure entertainment that's going to be enjoyed by action gamers and our fans. That calling is already there - we feel it, and therefore we will continue to work towards a future for the series.
>>1853364 Considering in his last photos he was looking like shit I doubt it. And aren't the yakuza much less murder happy these days?
58 years old, he was just a kid!
>>1856248 The Yakuza are basically irrelevant now, yes.
(3.22 MB 404x397 spy.gif)

>>1863544 Largely because the average yakuza is old as fuck. The median age is like 54, less than 5% of the syndicates are younger than 30. The socio-economic reasons they even came about don't really exist in modern Japan. Shinōkōshō legally hasn't existed for 150~ years and socially stopped mattering decades ago, so entering wider society as a burakumin or other peasant wasn't an issue, Japan transformed into an industrial nation with a high standard of living, so why be a low-level drug runner when being a road worker or cashier unironically earns better money?
>>1863544 >>1863740 Delusional. The Yakuza controls the whole entertainment industry in Japan since the beginning. They also control most companies, and have many seats in the government. There is no Japan without the Yakuza.
>>1863740 >>1863896 Yakuza are likely still around, but our perception and understanding of them may have shifted over the past 20 years, especially in such a secretive society and organization. Things like the "yakuza exclusion ordinance" have probably played a part.
>>1863740 Isn't that almost exactly what happened with most of the Irish rebels after they attained positions of power, they basically just took up official roles in government/clerical positions and started working regular jobs since they basically got what they wanted?

>>1863740 >>1863945 >>1864159 Organized crime is dying across the globe in general. It's only in war-torn and authoritarian nations like Russia, Gaza, and West Taiwan where organized crime still thrives. >>1871193 Play Ninja Gaiden Black and 2. Only play the rest if you want more. And yes, but they're ball bustingly hard, 2 especially so since it's rushed development and Tecmo drama with Itagaki really handicaped it's enemy variety, bosses hitboxes and camera control.
>>1871193 >It seems like something you'd have to have nostalgia for to enjoy How the hell are you "here" of all places, and saying shit like that? Great games don't spoil and go bad over time. They're exactly the same now as when they came out. The only thing preventing anyone for enjoying an old game is just taking the time to learn how to play the damn thing. I've starting to feel utterly defeated by the passage of time, and what has become of the modern video game player, I see people eager to sweep games like DMC1, Sonic Adventure 2, NG 1 and 2 under the rug as "bad and old", because they don't conform to what games are now. People with no patience, or adaptability. I just had to grow up with an N64 that conditioned me to be able to play fucking anything. I've always had this disconnect from being able to enjoying far more flawed games that got justifiable criticism, but now people complain about the outright good games too now. It doesn't happen as often as it feels, but it's sad it happens at all.
>>1871204 Ill emulate it kinda wanted to get into Ninja gaiden but I felt I missed the had to grow up playing it window so just didn't bother old games retrograding is bad
>>1864251 What's your timezone?
>>1871204 Actually I might just start from 1 I have an autism about doing things in order >>1871383 Calm down dude I grew up in that era of gaming too I don't get hung up on graphics and stuff I'm 30 but some things are just you had to be there to appreciate and starting something with the mindset of a 30 something is not the same as a 14 something who is just happy to have the experience, fully immersed in everything story plot art direction etc.
>>1871193 >>1871457 I do want to say they're good, actually had a friend who tail beginning gen z who has played them and enjoy them if that helps, but I do have nostalgia playing in. I get where you're coming from though. But at the same time I've played some old games I never did that were part of my/our time and still enjoyed them. It usually makes me feel oddly reminiscent because I still remember how games were back then, and also said I didn't get to play them back then. I think as long as you grew up within the era and play games during the era you'll enjoy them like some of the ones you played while getting the same feeling. Sure I can play very old games like Final Fantasy(NES), get through it, and enjoy it, but playing FF8, 9, or 10 hits a different spot even when I didn't have the chance to play them back then. Well I did play 10 a bit on a rental but that's besides the point. You can see what games have done then and now, and it takes you back sometimes.
>>1871457 Also I'm not sure if you mean 1 as in the NES games or the Xbox game. If the NES games then good luck! If the Xbox game, Black is just an updated version that doesn't change the gameplay overall so no need to play the original version.

>>1871193 >>1871204 >>1871385 I never really got into the new Ninja Gaiden because I grew up with the original and the NES games were Ninja Gaiden to me. Also because it debuted on the Xbox which I didn't have so between those two things I basically marked it off my list. I've still never tried them and I'm not sure if I'd really like them. I am really intrigued about Yaiba though.
>>1871493 Yeah I'll try the og first and if I like the gameplay and plot I'll try the remake(?) >>1871641 Opposite situation it looks cool but I never got to experience it growing up and fomo might hit which always sucks playing something way late
>>1871641 I love the original 3 NES games, the 1992 Master System version is also very good and I need to give that a try.
>>1871457 >The mindset of a 30 something is not the same as a 14 something who is just happy to have the experience, fully immersed in everything story plot art direction etc. I'm also 30 and YES IT IS GODDAMN IT!, or at least it should be. With in the last year for the first time I've beat almost every Gauntlet game, Dark Chambers for the Atari 7800, X2 Wolverines Revenge, Star Wars The Clone Wars, P.N.03, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, Star Fox 1 & 2, BodyHarvest, both Castlevania N64 games and TimeSpliters 1. Were they all perfect, no. But there was something cool in all of them. Because video games are COOL! It is a god given miracle any single video game even exists on this planet, and I don't like the idea of taking any for granted, knowing how much work it takes to make a single one.

>>1873119 You somehow become more creative in your 30s, it's hard to explain man.
>>1874233 30 is when the male brain fully opens up. That's why Plato forbid men younger than 30 from studying philosophy.
>>1872957 Idk bro I just can't articulate it as well as I mean to something about the way a teenager inherently experiences games and art compared to us boomers is just not comparable
>>1874233 >pic Keita Amemiya should open a school for his designs, so his style won't die with him. His designs are perfect.

>>1874641 >Teenager I experience it just the same, when you're a kid with no standards though, then yeah, it's a completely different experience. The sole exception might be STALKER SoC, but that was such a unique game at a time where everything was getting linear, consolized and streamlined that it really doesn't matter when you played it, it will make you feel. A good experience will be great no matter your age.
