I played this for some reason. It is a 2007 JRPG for the DS whose development was (I think?) presided over by Hironobu Sakaguchi a few years after his departure from Square. It was not released in English. I think there's an English patch but I played it on original hardware. It's a pretty good game. The mechanics are generally solid, with a few minor gimmicks that are kinda cool and a few annoyances. The UI is fully stylus-driven which neither helps nor hurts the game. The story is a shallow, under-explained mishmash that is worthy of the director of Final Fantasy 1, especially in that it includes a weird time loop that cannot be fully understood. It is charming enough and somewhat evocative, but it actively avoids taking any interesting risks. I don't really recommend playing this game, but I don't recommend against it either. It's fine. Maritie is best girl. I resented not being able to talk about this game on 4chan's /vr/, since it would have perfectly fit the rules if it would have been released on the PSX, which could have handled it well (except for the stylus support which is never used in the game for any purpose that buttons and a cursor couldn't easily serve). I haven't anything special to say about it here. But now I have made a post about it.
>>239 I approve of this as the first ds game posted on /vr/. How did you like the soundtrack? I've liked the other mistwalker osts that I've listened to.
>>241 All the music in the game was good. And some of it was memorable enough to stay in my head for a few hours after some play sessions. It didn't especially dazzle me, but I have nothing negative to say about it. I looked into reviews of other Mistwalker games through 2011, but will probably never play any of them, though a couple tempted me. This one caught me because I prefer JRPGs with 2D graphics (which is what this mostly uses, though most of its animations are technically prerendered 3D) and because I was curious about what Sakaguchi was up to at this time. Blue Dragon seemed a little blatantly kid-oriented for me but a story starring a serious-looking, non-chibi waifu caught my interest. (She is not best girl, however. But she is a good girl. Also, that thing sticking up from behind her is a gun, which is fun.)
>>239 was this game not popular at all? there's like 50 piece of art on gelbooru and half of it is just official art
>>244 It seems to have sold about 100k. For reference, of the several DS games with the Final Fantasy name linked to them to be released in the 2006-2008 range, only Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales matched that record. All others achieved 3-10 times as many Japanese sales.
