What is retro?

Games that are allowed to be discussed fit the following criteria: All console games up to 5th gen. All Pinball games. All PC/Arcade games prior to the end of 2004. All 6th gen games provided that they were not also released on a 7th gen console that is not the Wii unless it came out prior to the end of 2006. All DS or PSP games provided that they were not also released on a 8th gen handheld. These last two rules allow for games like Twilight Princess, Baroque, and Godzilla Unleashed to be talked about while restricting games like Guitar Hero 5 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2013. HD rereleases/collections and ports are to be considered separate games when considering if a game may considered retro. eg: Okami HD does not invalidate its retro status on the PS2. Remakes and hd releases may be discussed but only in the context of their originals. Meaning you may not make a thread about the DQ3 HD-2D Remake but it may be discussed when being compared to other DQ3 releases. Adjacent topics may also be discussed. Magazines, guides, hardware, peripherals, tvs/monitors, etc. Keep in mind though that these are not explicitly the topic of the board and so a bit more effort should be put into OPs involving these things. Hopefully these rules seem fair enough to most people. And remember, if things become too busy here or discussion becomes to lopsided to the newer titles then a v2k board will be made. These are the rules as they stand right now but feel free to discuss them or alternatives in this thread if you wish. We might as well have this conversation now. I know most people feel that the term "retro" as it applies to games should be cut off after 5th gen. This is fair, since after that point games really did start to get smoothed down and corporatised. Not to mention 3d graphics got much better in the 6th gen. A lot of people with this mindset usually suggest a /v2k/ board. I have to say though, if you want to talk about dead boards, a board dedicated to only two console generations would definitely be one considering the traffic we get around here. On the other hand some people use a simple rule of if console is 20 years old then its retro. This makes things simple and let's face it, none of us are getting any younger. Even GCCX has accepted the PS2 and Gamecube as retro though they are played rarely on that show. I think the 20 year rule is good but the problem is you will inevitably face the issue where you end up talking about the 360/PS3 and at that point you're very clearly not in any sort of world where things feel retro. That gen had its own fads and expectations that are clearly different from the ones that game before it. So another option, and one I'm pulling a bit towards and I know some people won't like, is that "retro", at least as far as this board would be concerned, will include 6th gen + DS and PSP and that is the absolute cutoff. The 20 year people will have their stuff and it is nice to be able to talk about Sega's entire hardware lineup on one board. And there are definitely a good amount of ps2 games that still have a experimental retro feel to them. The DS and PSP besides the 20 year rule, their major benefit is that they received a decent amount of retro game remakes and it just makes it easier to talk about those games when no one has wonder if they're allowed to talk about them. HOWEVER, in the event that the board does actually get a lot of traffic or there's too much talk of Halo, then a /v2k/ split at that point would definitely be justified and enacted. But tell if you have an opinion different than what I laid out above.

Night-only games

I started playing Koudelka recently. I'm only on the first disc but I feel like I've already fallen in love with it. I think a big part of the reason I'm enjoying it so much is that I decided to only play it at night. I turn off all the lights in my room and just lose myself in the world of the game. It surprised me how scary the game became when I did this despite it being a turn-based RPG. I keep startling myself when I think I see something suddenly moving on the screen, and whenever I hear a spooky noise I can't tell if it's coming from the game or the forest outside my window. What games do you like to play at night? And if you've played it, what are your thoughts on Koudelka?

Reposting from /v/, I'm trying to figure shit out here on the site: 4chan refugee, don't know where to go, don't know what to do. Before the site died, I installed XP on an ancient PC I had lying around for the purposes of making it into pre-Vista gaming rig, strictly offline, of course. Much of my library fits the 98 and XP era, and I managed to get some games installed with GOG's offline installers. The reason why I'm bothering to make this thread, is that I want to know what source port and/or emulator is available to use, that's still compatible with XP. I don't expect much, already have ePSXe, Project64, and DosBox installed, just need to find what fits best. Another thing, I'm not holding my breath on it, is finding out how I can get some of my Steam games working. I heard of Goldberg Emulator, bit I never used anything like it. Don't really want to rely on One Core API for everything. Also, didn't think of it before, but is there a chance the N64 decomp ports would work?

Morrowind

So I beat the bloodmoon expansion for morrowind the other day. And while I did like it, I have to say that in the end it was kind of a not underwhelming but not great experience either. Solstheim is absolutely CRAWLING with enemies. I used jump spells to get around and even then they were still annoying, I can't imagine actually walking to get anywhere. You would end up spending half of your time in the expansion just beating on bears and fryse hags. It seems they decided to counter this by putting health potions in almost every single chest and on almost every dead character. I'm wondering if they were also doing that to make sure you'd be loaded up for the last area and the final fights but who knows. Todds design language seems to be all over it though. There is a mountain in the middle of the island that you CAN climb. The majority of areas in solstheim(I can't even call them dungeons) and just small burial chambers with maybe a couple rooms and a few enemies. "dungeons" are long tunnels with a few branching paths. The area you think will be the final dungeon or something close to it, castle karstaag, is just more of those branching tunnels below and a few mostly empty rooms up top. I don't think there's a single lock in the whole expansion with a difficulty higher than 75 and most are at 50 which is strange considering the recommended level for the final areas is 40, at least according to the wiki anyway. It figures that todd must have told the designers to make sure that players can do everything in one run of the expansion. They probably weren't thinking about adding any replayability. I do have to say though, I did like the main quest for the most part and I liked the raven rock quests as well except for the one where they tell you to fuck off and go across the island to figure out what stahlrim is. That really killed the flow of those quests. I ended up forgetting about raven rock for quite a while after that and I would have preferred I didn't. The side quests were a mixed bag. I liked the curveball they throw at you with the falmer research quest and I also thought the sovngarde quest started well but then completely fell flat on its face in the end. Same with the uncle sweetshare quest. Him actually giving up the act because you ask him seems out of character for someone that far gone. Some of the enchanted items you get are pretty good like the robe that fortifies your magic and cunjuration but lowers your personality by 100 and causes the sun to damage you. The white walker robe though is kind of dumb and basically just tarhiel tier shenanigans. Overall I'd say it's maybe a 6.5 or 7 out of ten. Now I just have to finish tribunal which I started and then quit when I had lost some save progress. People say that it's the worse one so I guess that will be interesting. I'm looking forward to hearing guards say "Mournhold, city of light! City of magic!" for 25 hours.

DOS Rom Sets

Where can I download DOS rom sets? Myabandonware has purged several games, dropping from 5565 to 4530. I'm hoping to be able to get all 5565 games in one set. Archive.org has a few sets, but torrent sites seem to be the best option. The problem is they are shutting down, and the remaining ones have lousy search functions.

What's the time limit for a game to be considered retro?

It's clear at this point as the years go by systems like the ps3, Xbox 360, and the Wii would be considered retro systems at this point but other disagree. What are your opinions on this because as unusual as it feels to some I feel that it's apt for the seventh console generation to be considered retro. Pic unrelated.

I beat silent hill for the first time last night. While I did enjoy a decent amount, I got the worst ending which left a bad taste in my mouth. I looked up what I did wrong and apparently there's a sidequest you can just easily miss. Same with saving cybil. I had the plastic bottle but I didn't find the spot to fill it. Oh well, that's how it is with these types of games I guess. I plan on playing silent hill 2 at some point but maybe I'll look up before hand what things I need to do to the good ending if I play it since I don't have time to replay games these days. I really liked the town though. At first I was pretty intrigued at the idea of a horror game where you have a whole town to run around in but I quickly saw that it's actually quite linear. Still, I liked its design and I imagine a lot of kids tried every single door to see if you could enter them.

What import games does /vr/ like? I've been looking forward to playing Sweet Home. I have a Famicom I got some years back, and I can use the English translation as I own a flashcart. I'm pretty fond of the PC-Engine and MSX as well, both very interesting consoles/computers in my opinion. What does /vr/ like?

Edutainment games that are still fun to play

I often see some edutainment games fondly talked about, but with a lot of them it appears as though nostalgia is doing a lot of the heavy lifting, because let's face it, they're squarely aimed at young children, so there's usually little depth to them in terms of content or gameplay, so there's not much to go back to as an adult. However, there are indeed exceptions, so let's talk about the ones that actually hold up. The Oregon Trail, for one, is still a fun little romp thanks to the fact that you have choices and there's resource management, and though there's an element of randomness which will sometimes bite you in the ass or even end your game through little fault of your own, it at least ensures that no two trips are ever quite the same.

DS RPGs

What are your favorite RPGs to play on the DS? If you're playing any now or finished one recently, feel free to share what you think about that too. The last big one I finished was Dragon Quest IV. My main party for the final chapter was Hero/Alena/Maanya/Minea. (Original, I know.) I played the Japanese version so I had all the party chat and I was really impressed by how much of it there was and how many incredibly minor and specific situations the characters would react to. I found one scene where you had to have both Maanya and Minea in your party and talk to a specific character while being polymorphed. Overall I thought it was pretty good. It didn't blow my mind; there were parts I liked and parts I thought were frustrating. I never ran from any battles as a self-imposed challenge, which as it turns out is the requirement for getting the best title, so that was pretty cool. It's the kind of RPG where I'm really happy I played it all the way to the end, but I wasn't interested in doing the postgame and I don't know if I'll ever replay it. If you're looking for a good RPG, know Japanese, and can find a copy for a decent price, I say go for it, but it's probably not a must-play.

Anyone remember those VIDEO GAME stores where you could sell your video games or trade them for credit? They were great places to find used Colecovision and Atari software. One of my greatest regrets though, one of these stores offered $10 credit for Test Drive II (Genesis) used, and I saw it at another store brand new for only $5. I could have bought all the $5 programs and traded them for double the credit. But I was too young, and afraid it wouldn't work.

Infuriating game to play. The rival cars constantly cockblock you in turns --unlike in previous games, their behavior will mimick the characteristics of the cars, such as drifting in turns-- which makes it so if you're close to one of them, you have a 50/50 chance of unavoidably bumping into them and having your lap ruined. They also can bump you from behind which destabilizes your car handling. In addition, the difficulty is balanced like shit (I played in normal and hard difficulties), if your first lap is not perfect, you won't have a chance to win the race even if the following laps are great. So you'll have to retry a lot to get a good first lap, which in turn it feels like RNG-dependent because you don't know if you'll get unlucky with the rivals. That shit ruined my enjoyment of the game. A shame because the courses are very stylistic and I liked to customize my cars' liveries (like in Rage Racer). RRT4 remains the last great RR.

Archaic Sealed Heat

I played this for some reason. It is a 2007 JRPG for the DS whose development was (I think?) presided over by Hironobu Sakaguchi a few years after his departure from Square. It was not released in English. I think there's an English patch but I played it on original hardware. It's a pretty good game. The mechanics are generally solid, with a few minor gimmicks that are kinda cool and a few annoyances. The UI is fully stylus-driven which neither helps nor hurts the game. The story is a shallow, under-explained mishmash that is worthy of the director of Final Fantasy 1, especially in that it includes a weird time loop that cannot be fully understood. It is charming enough and somewhat evocative, but it actively avoids taking any interesting risks. I don't really recommend playing this game, but I don't recommend against it either. It's fine. Maritie is best girl. I resented not being able to talk about this game on 4chan's /vr/, since it would have perfectly fit the rules if it would have been released on the PSX, which could have handled it well (except for the stylus support which is never used in the game for any purpose that buttons and a cursor couldn't easily serve). I haven't anything special to say about it here. But now I have made a post about it.

What Are (You) Playing?

Title says it all. I'm currently playing through The Great Battle II: Last Fighter Twin, my first impressions of the game aren't all that great. You play as SD versions of popular Japanese characters from different franchises in a crossover beat 'em up. Extremely lackluster so far, since all characters play the exact same.

Dead board, just like Sega. And it can't be revived, just like you can't revive the Saturn. Or can it...? So anon, did you ever play a Saturn game? Did you ever play a Dreamcast game? More importantly, was that game Floigan Bros Episode 1? Do you also think that Sega exiting the hardware business signified the end of the retro era?

Medievil

Do you guys like Medievil? I loved the first game as a kid but I could never beat it as a kid. I find it amusing that it got not one but TWO remakes across different generations. However no one ever seems to talk about MediEvil 2, was it that bad? How good is the PS4 remake?
