I think one of the points he was trying to make was that the structure of the early internet facilitated an environment where a website liek 4chan would gather traffic organically, and not through an exodus from another website
like this one, through mass marketing, or making yourself some sort of celebrity. They would also not get immediately blown the fuck out and drain their userbase due to network effects from larger competing websites, unlike today. Take steam, youtube or twitch for example. You can no longer create the community you want, at least easily.
The new generations are being raised on phones and Ipads, and all they've known is the corporate walled gardens. They'll probably be in their 20s or 30s before they grasp the concept of an independent website and how the internet works because of their tech illiteracy.
