How do you feel about aliens in Sonic games? I never could like them outside of CD’s (and by extension Mania’s) brief appearance of UFOs in the Special Stages. Especially now with the “two worlds” thing adding more confusion. Like Zero Gravity’s story rubbed me the wrong way with the Ancient Babylonians apparently not just being anthro bird descendants of genies but how those “genies” were stranded ETs which just piled on more outlandish stuff. Or maybe that was a clue all along that the two worlds mandate was in effect even back then or perhaps just a retcon since technically the main cast are considered aliens already on Earth. Felt like it was something that the series didn’t need. I instinctively recoiled when the Black Arms, Seedrians, and Wisps were introduced, but that’s just me.

Cosmo I like, Wisps outside of gameplay I like, and the Two Worlds thing is rather pointless, but wouldn't be a problem if made obvious since 90s era Sonic. The worse use of them is just like the worse use of humans: too dark/realistic next to Sonic. Black Arms, namely Black Doom is something I think is really out of place. Also Shadow being part alien because of that is convoluted since he's already alien to human DNA basically. Also the Zeti, the opposite extreme to Black Doom. Concept is ok, execution is bad, only Zazz and Zavok should have existed at most with better writing for Zavok, but worse offense is designs as well.

Lol >>19137 I believe it's because Sonic has been reduced to "member the good old days?" and as for IDW Ian was using old game quotes and past moments/locations to use as story narration and it got on people's nerves. Imo, as much as I am getting tired of the classic era shilling despite me being a classic era fan, it's moreso that SEGA hasn't done new stuff for Sonic lately so I guess that's why, but I myself don't dislike the references, just from SEGA though I can understand. Paramount doing that is ok because I'm sure most of them came from Tyson Hesse's input when we worked with them for the redesign.
>>19117 I grew to like the Wisps myself after the initial Colors presentation (I thought the game was going to be a much weirder non boost spin-off at first glance) and would have liked to see them return in a Colors 2 after Gens but much later down the road. They reappeared in Lost World with the explanation is that some of them "stayed behind because they liked Earth" despite the planets teleporting away in the end and then their actual implementation in that one and subsequent reappearances apparently soured their good will with a lot of people. The Zeti themselves got it even worse since they didn't develop any meaningful characteristics besides their main ones and came off as bland but they, particularly Zavok also kept getting pushed by Sonic Team for the sake of having a rogues' gallery. Both Zeti and the Black Arms also didn't do much in ways of world building. The Deadly Six are hundreds of years old on Lost Hex and Black Doom had visited Earth for at least 2 millenia but we never get any insight as to their origins of their home worlds and why they're evil in the same way that the Knuckles Tribe for instance, had waged war after their chief's mother had died and got the emeralds for the sake of empowering themselves only for it to kill them in the end, resulting in the creation of Angel Island as we know it.

The guy did the closest thing that could be done to save the project other than to start from scratch, nobody was giving the movie the time of day before and now it looks like there are some people excited. I think retconning already established characters and concepts to be alien in nature is stupid, but I don't think aliens themselves are unfitting in the Sonic universe. I mean, Mega Man introduce actual aliens as early as Mega Man 3, and it didn't really hurt that series or majorly affect it.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with atmospheric and movie music in general :( I thought the song was cool first impressions but it seems like people on the chans don’t like it. I’m thinking because they don’t think it’s Sonic though but that’s probably not what it is in reality and what my head keeps saying. I kinda think that a 1:1 rendition or just ripping songs from the games and throwing them into a big movie is preposterous. Especially if that’s all the OST is going to be.

I don't have any problems with the fact that the song is a rap or the artists involved, but I don't really feel it's about sonic. It's just a song about their gangster hood life or something, and besides the use of words like "rings", "speed" and "going fast" and the (arcade-y?) intro I would never have guessed this was Soniic related if you made me listen to it two days ago.

I think the first rapper is honestly the best part of it all, but it's honestly just "fun", like, it's like a fun little video that I shouldn't feel like it has to be something that I should expect in like a real Sonic game, you know? I honestly gave me heavy Wreck it Ralph credit vibes because of the sprite animations. And I honestly think they animated it better here then in Wreck it Ralph imo I hope there's more than just this though. Maybe if they did more of these with other musicals maybe people will calm down about this tiny little thing.

Don't expect anything for February. I'm going to be planning out all the levels/other miscellaneous things to plan out and work into the gameplay. I'm one of the few people that seriously dislike precision in a 3D Sonic game. 3D games in general aren't anywhere as precise as their 2D counterparts, and I feel like the slower you are, the more precise you can make your character. Needless to say, Sonic isn't a slow series. I'd rather design the levels with more space in mind so that, to quote ShayMay here: "It's about when you jump, rather then where you jump." And I think a situation where you pulled off something precise on a whim like say, that monitor bounce at the end of the update video, feels more satisfying because you anticipated it rather then needing to do something like that all the time. That being said, I do plan to take precision into account in a more controlled form in the game, like obstacle courses and whatnot, but otherwise, you shouldn't have to expect to be precise when just playing through the main camping.

After so much drama regarding the franchise and the characters I think people are slowly getting immunized about it. 06 was a huge stink that still makes waves 14 years later, Boom was a big stink that was mostly forgotten, the movie would have probably been somewhere in the middle but if it bombed hard Sega would have just pretended it never happened like they always do and moved on. Although I guess maybe they could have also somehow rushed into conclusions about Sonic and deemed his situation insurmountable or destined even less resources to the franchise. The only things likely now are that this is probably here to stay, that we're probably never going to get a proper animated Sonic movie by Marza, and that this is probably going to further drive wedges into the fanbase even more.

So I've gotten to play Forces thanks to that torrent and… It's better than Lost World. And this time I waited past the first stage to have this opinion so far. Just to stress, the gameplay isn't that much better than LW, it's about 30% better, but I won't call it until I completely finish it later

So I've beaten Forces. It's at most a 6/10 game. I enjoyed it more than Lost World, but it's far worse than Unleashed/Gens as a boost game, the worse classic Sonic game since Genesis (GBA port) and it's what I'd call a "tunnel vision" game. There's so many oversights to what would have normally been spot checked for quality control that it honestly leaves me more baffled then mad. To make it short; >Modern Sonic's air controls, in 3D, are somehow worse than in 2D. Your momentum carries in 2D almost like in the classic games, EXCEPT when you let go of the stick all together, which you instantly stop on a dime. It's jarring and awkward, but only when you actively let go of the stick >Classic Sonic's air controls are the exact opposite, you stop on a dime no matter what you do and it feels terrible. I don't understand how both Sonic's can have completely different controls both between dimensions AND between just Modern Sonic himself. the OC has similar controls to Modern Sonic to notice anything different. You also have 8 directional movement, just like Lost World, which is terrible. >Classic Sonic's physics are, in all do respect, not as bad as people claim, because the surprising thing is, if you rolled like you'd should, you actually gain momentum… too much momentum. The level design just wasn't made like the classics (or at least, not 1 to 1 to it) for such an overpowered speed cap since the physics aren't as air tight as the classics, leaving to weird start and stop moments on some walls, and other times, you just jet down a 90 degree incline for no reason. The physics are likely as bad as people claim because they never roll in these examples I see online that I've noticed for the past 3 years since the game came out. All in all, it's better and worse than Generations (which actively slows you down if you rolled) but obviously, Mania and all the genesis games pail in comparison to both Gens/Forces Classic. >The OC is the highlight of the game. I really think if they took a page out of AHiT for how this worked the OC could have been the best part of the game tenfold. But as it is, the OC is too restrictive to both how you design your OC (for reasons I heard was to keep them from being "too cool" next to Sonic) and how you can colorize your outfits, my biggest issue with the OC. Otherwise, it's actually fun and cute for the game's benefit. Overall, all I can say that was good as well was the graphics. The HE2 when you actually see it in game is vastly better than the HE1. I did like the higher contrast of highlights and shadows in Unleashed over Forces, but overall, the biggest issue with Forces isn't the HE2, it's the art design of the entire game. They had it better in Unleashed/Gens and should have stuck with that. Really, Forces as a whole would have been an 8/10 or even 9/10 game if they stuck with Unleashed/Gens as a base to begin with instead of modding Lost World instead.

The last zone with all 3 characters+avatar&Sonic isn’t much bigger than playing through Titanic Monarchic with only one character for reference, if it all.

I finally got this shit to work, though so far I only got into the menu and haven't given it a spin. I like the main menu music quite a bit and I'm happy that I can switch the voices to Japanese without having to hack the damn game apart like in other cases. On the other hand I've had a few issues with the game not saving my preferences correctly and the main menu and background give me source game vibes, lol.

Continued a bit more into Forces. So far it's… not as bad as I thought it was going to be, honestly. I thought it was going to be offensively bad but it's not so far. The music is also not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I don't think they're great compositions on their own for the most part but they do go well with the game. I actually don't like how they did the boost this time. It's way too fast and difficult to control and they overdid the visual effect so you can't see shit when you're boosting, and they pretty much force you to boost very often which sucks. Also how on rails everything is is rather disgusting. I still haven't gotten used to the controls, there seem to be some odd quirks probably in some cases caused because of how automated everything is. In webm related for example I just couldn't easily aim on the badniks and I remember this happening before too at some other point. >>19671 Yeah, it was down for hours. You know, after playing games that actually bring in classic gameplay into 3D more 1 to 1 than the official Sonic Team games did, it really reveals how I've grown tired of how they handle the level design in Sonic. When you look at the stage as a whole, you just go from set piece to set piece, mostly always just some path without much nuance or effort to progress, it's simple and nothing really challenging. I really wish a new design mentality was sought after, one that makes you think your in an environment to explore and platform in, that uses your own speed without much automation to progress.

When you're going sideways, your controls are different than going back and forth. This along with the 8 directional movement and the run button being hardcoded into the game, in other words, going into your "max run state" is done via a flip in the code instead of a button press like in LW because they wanted you to accelerate like in the other boost games without actually making you accelerate so going into top run speed is actually the same programically as pressing the run button in LW. And as for the Homing Attack, I think past games made aerial turning a lot more instant so aiming towards targets was more accurate but by Sonic Unleashed aerial turning became really slow so aiming became still and awkward.

The levels are a lot more "cramped" and unlike previous games, both Lost World and Forces introduces the homing attack reticle appearing even on the ground instead of after you jumped into the air. It gets far worse with this in the last level of the game too.

Today I found out they put Sonic movie ads next to the building I work in. It probably wouldn't be noteworthy in the US or UK but you never see anything Sonic here. Now I have to tolerate the dumb hedgehog even when at work. Coworkers started talking about Sonic because of it and it was kind of weird because I've never actually talked about Sonic with real people.

A website has managed to publish a review on the movie ahead of the embargo lifting. There are no story spoilers in the TSSZ article but haven't had time yet to read the original review. Apparently the reviewer doesn't think the movie is good but I haven't found an actual score in the original article. Played Sunset Heights yesterday, it brought me back to when we first saw this stage in SXSW years ago. It was kinda sad, that point was when I finally accepted that Forces was not going to deliver. Between the speed and how much is going on the screen the webm comes out awful and eats through the whole filesize, lol. Sonic's air control is so weird in this game, Modern controls way too loosely and Classic is too unpredictable because of the opposite basically, he stops too fast so you can't calculate well where he's going to land. Similar experience to what someone else had recently I think. >>19760 On the other hand, these micro cutscenes that last only a handful of seconds and sometimes cut out to a completely different locations or continue in the chat screen are annoying and feel cheap as hell.

Yeah like I said, it's baffling how when he moves through the air in 2D it somehow is both better than classic Sonic but also too loose for those small platforms in 2D sections. Plus something else I found out while playing this, if you let go of your analog stick he stops on a dime… But if you direct his movement it carries? It's fucking offputing. Forces biggest issue for me is not the tone, it's the gameplay, how it just feels like it's a hodgepodge of ever type of Sonic gameplay in all of his eras fighting for dominance at the same time.
