Sonic-like Games/Clones Anonymous 04/28/2025 (Mon) 21:38:41 No. 33942
Here for a thread about games that are sonic inspired, got any favorites? any good lesser known ones?
>>33942 Has anybody played Penny's Big Breakaway? Is it any good, and does it really feel like Sonic?
>>33943 I downloaded the demo and when I opened it I was presented with some insanely long insane sounding agreement and that annoyed me so I closed the demo lol But I'll give it a try for real at some point, it just wasn't high in my priorities that day
>>33945 >insanely long insane sounding agreement What was insane about it?
>>33947 I don't remember. I just read some line that upset me, but it's probably industry standard, it's just that the interface for it was poorly designed so seeing it and reading some random lines of the agreement gave me a poor first impression. Still wanna give it a try though

From the actual 90's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPfDobjXsoU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeQxYHJyt1c Bubsy is also surprisingly not bad, imo anyway.
Let's see how many of these Sonic clones I can name off the top of my head: Old School knockoffs: Jazz Jackrabbit Rocky Rodent Crash Bandicoot Awesome Possum Bubsy Kid Chaos Modern day Sonic knockoffs: Freedom Planet Spark the Electric Jester Rollin Rascal Panic Porcupine Polyroll
Haste is a pretty good modern one. Just ignore the story and gay art style. Endless mode is kino
>>34059 I've heard it's not that close to sonic beyond just going fast.
Is Pepsiman a Sonic Clone?
>>34081 No. Autorunners existed before Sonic. Neither is cloudbuilt.

I played the demo for Rollin' Rascal last year. It was fun. I enjoyed Sonic GT a lot, so it's nice to see its creators making their own thing.

Tysontan has been redrawing some old FP stuff, I hope he's willing to collab for another game.
>>34305 Given how he didn't get paid for FP2, I doubt it.
>>34362 Why didn't they pay him?
It's a really easy answer, but I'll say Pizza Tower. Probably the most fun I've had with 2D platformer since Mania dropped
>>33942 Spark 3 is the best 3D Sonic game, just needs a roll to really be complete. I know Rolling Rascal is basically that and I'm looking forward to it, but I think it still needs a lot more work and I also don't really like the way they binded the "spindash" in RR, which is weird because it was fine in Sonic GT.
>>34370 I'm not very familiar with the game but I heard it was inspired by the Wario games
>>34538 Mostly, yeah. But there's still some Sonic influence there, at times it can feel like a bit Sonic Rush imo. It's just a really fun fast-paced platformer overall
>>35008 Interesting, maybe I'll try it someday. There are many other games I'd like to play first though so it might take a while
I found someone who's porting Sonic 1 zones to Freedom Planet 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aNMbMbpKY0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTYX9fo2YPM

>>34366 /i don't know the full details but apparently they only had him on board as a volunteer. I wouldn't blame him if wants nothing to with GT
>>35228 I see, thanks. If that's what they're agreement was then I don't think it should be much of a big deal, but obviously I don't know the situation.
Pic related barely counts because it has slope physics and built on speed. Plays like trials and utilizes some fun tech like performing a 360 to reload your weapons, or a counter 360 to restock your reflect ability. A bit exploration heavy and you are a one hit wonder (there's tons of checkpoints thankfully), dialogue can be pretty edgy but you can skip most of it. Been having fun so far but play the demo to see if its your thing.
>>33953 >punk Nappa and Red from pokemon go on a rad skateboard adventure sponsored by Coca-Cola
>>33942 How about Zippy the Porcupine for the Atari 2600 >>>/vb/27176
>>33953 High Seas Havoc looks like a generic platformer with an animal mascot, not really a Sonic clone in terms of gameplay. Coca Cola Kid looks more Sonic like since slopes actually affect your movement speed, you have to maintain a flow state, has a two levels and a boss structure and the bosses have no damage cool down. Since it was developed by Sega themselves, it wouldn't surprise me if it uses the same engine as the 8 bit Sonics.

It's funny how Freedom Planet is a Sonic fangame yet the characters used were originally drawn in the Clamp manga style. Sure, they were originally a Sonic Heroes team but they seem more suited for the non-Sonic aesthetic versus something like Spark or Panic Porcupine. Maybe this is why Freedom Planet is such a mess, artwise. Then again, the whole series is a mess at this point.
>>33942 What are the exact criteria for a Sonic clone specifically that differentiates it from the broader character of mascot platformer? Speed?
>>36912 > that differentiates it from the broader character of mascot platformer? Well, back then it was just having a "mascot with attitude", as in trying to make it cool and edgy. nowadays it's more about trying to play like sonic, so yeah, if the platformer is an arcade style, speed based platformer it's probably at least inspired by sonic desu.
>>36911 >Maybe this is why Freedom Planet is such a mess, artwise. Freedom Planet's art seems pretty solid in the second game.
