Loud explosions preceding earthquakes usually mean the shifting caused pressure changes that result in pockets of gas shooting out of the rock. They aren't really indicative of much of anything, however examples 1, 2, and 3 all tend to cause gas pocket shifts that lead to the ground randomly exploding sometimes. When 3rd party emission maps are released some time next year, we should be able to track emissions over the Noto Peninsula which will add or subtract evidence from some of the above theories. For example, if a large pocket of SO2 happens to originate in that region, the media will blame the earthquake however it is more indicative of liquid injection or drilling/mining operations. I'm of the belief that the earthquake was naturally-occurring, but that artificial means could have expanded it from a magnitude 3-5 into a more serious magnitude earthquake due to shifting gases. The fact that the Noto Peninsula region is KNOWN as a green energy-proving grounds in Japan makes me extra skeptical that Japan is doing some shady shit there.
