3D Animation/Modelling Thread Anonymous 04/11/2021 (Sun) 16:47:22 No. 2333 [Reply]
About 2 months ago I started dicking around in blender doing 3D viewmodel animation using models I found on sketchfab (mainly TastyTony's Low-Poly shit). More recently I've been practicing character animation using a crude stickfigure-esque model I've rigged up to do very basic motions like pullups, running, and pushups. I'm gonna get into modelling eventually but right now I'm more interested in animation. Got a couple of examples of what I've been working on experimenting with camera motions and some other shit. I'll share some of the resources I've been using, but I'd appreciate it if some anons would care to share anything they've been doing. I haven't tried using the graph editor at all, I've been just posing each limb and keyframeing it. I don't have resources that I've been using for character animation as I've just recently started practicing it, but regardless here's some of the stuff I've been working on. I've done a lot more, but either accidentally saved over it or didn't export it. >Resources Hyper's Reload animation tutorial: old but still has some good info [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzLnkpBQUfA] Thriftydonut's tutorial: very helpful for showing how to rig properly [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV6XP-EDzw8] Polybagel's tutorial: showing how to use the graph editor [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbuD3-UZV8c] TastyTony's Low-Poly gun models: Despite being Low-Poly they're well detailed and simple enough to use for animations [https://sketchfab.com/TastyTony/models] First Person rigs [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qdpF8W4aI1CPiv6usZVBpkXShqER4syVpLfv6R1HCck/edit]
Looking pretty good, man. I was thinking of using 3D to supplement my work for inorganic subjects like buildings and vehicles so I appreciate the resources.

This is mine for drawing and painting styles. I would need far more room to squeeze in all subject matter that inspires and influences me.
>>2249 I like that Barbucci Italian guy in the bottom left quite a bit, that style has a lot of appeal to me. Good taste overall. I think I recognize most of that material besides the bowman-and a decent portion of it is on my own influence map. >Empowered I'm glad/surprised he's kept up with it over the years even if I've never been an avid (or even casual, really) reader. There are some pretty good panels in that one, not just the cheesecake stuff either.
>>2250 >Good taste overall. I think I recognize most of that material besides the bowman Thanks. Bowman is Rosinski's Thorgal. He illustrated Thorgal for years, moving between classic European comic art style, more modern one, and various painting techniques. His pencils and inks are on the gritty side, and in my opinion a sweet spot between old and new European style. His paintings have a strange, fairy tale quality to them and good chunk of Thorgal comics is fully painted. >Empowered Warren is great at drawing action, probably best artist in the U.S. when it comes to it. His work on texture and shading is very good too. He drew Empowerd just in pencil and on printer paper, the same medium I enjoy the most. Warren might be retiring from drawing soon, as his right hand is busted and Empower is almost finished.

What the fuck is a gelatin study? Anonymous 03/04/2021 (Thu) 01:03:57 No. 1859 [Reply]
I saw "gelatin study" mentioned in a drawpile session, but I haven't been able to figure out what it is and why it would be helpful. I assume it means that you just draw or paint jello, but I'm uncertain what it actually improves. Anyone have any clue? Maybe Loomis could explain what he meant?

Dumbfuck jags still arguing in here. Again, I never asked for free work. "Hobbyist" as in someone who only has experience doing such things as a hobby. Doesn't mean they would or wouldn't be paid, which is something that could be found out by inquiring instead of being aggro'd at everyone. If you're saying, "get off of my precious dead image board", why would you not want me to go to someplace else? Why are you even raging in this thread instead of ignoring it? Your argument is literally "ewww evil Discord 4Channer eww", and since that's all you're programmed to repeat over and over, I have no reason to do anything EXCEPT continue to make you mad. >>18 What's the purpose of the site? I like clean layouts without most modern cancer, and preferably with menu on right or left margin, instead of the top or bottom. Pic related is a decent example, even though I would get rid off the column on the right. I hate sites that use hover to reveal submenus or for other functions. Same goes for "sticky" and "floating" menus or bars. They just take up valuable screen space, instead of staying in their place. It is pretty pointless functionality on pc, since space+shift or HOME buttons can get you to the top in less than a second anyway. Slow animations that waste time are another complaint. Other things I think are bad: >slide shows >tiny buttons >text and image shadows >animations and videos that play automatically, especially when the site is text focused - exception are gif avatars and reaction images >welcome image that forces you to scroll or click "visit" button to get to the actual website >bunch of empty space (like twitter) >information displayed only in a narrow area in middle of the screen (like twitter) >endless scrolling >pages that are not numbered, and your only options are "older" and "newer" >tumlr's and pintrest's "tiles" system, where each post is a tile of varying size >no search toolbar

layering tutorials in Krita Anonymous 12/24/2020 (Thu) 02:16:53 No. 1239 [Reply]
I don't know if this is the place to put this but, does anybody know any in-depth idiot proof video tutorials on inherited alpha/masking layers in Krita? I've watched multiple videos and they all either expect you know what they are and make me go pic related, or they just tell you how to do the very basics of it and don't go any further.

Resources for color theory and digital painting Anonymous 12/21/2020 (Mon) 20:11:43 No. 1207 [Reply]
I checked the resource hub, and could not find anything specifically related to color theory alone. Currently I am still working on Fun With a Pencil, but I've started into the grind phase in the middle of the book, and want to lightly study color theory to go with the very simple characters I am producing just get some variance and keep me engaged. Sorry if this doesn't deserve it's own thread, couldn't find anything in the catalog other than the share thread, but I wouldn't know what to ask for specifically. Please help. Pic unrelated.

What are some good books about getting into traditional painting and color after you've >Mastered Implying. traditional realist drawing? I was dumb enough to try and hone in my drawing skills for years without focus on painting. Now that I've gotten into it, my under drawings translate horribly, I cannot properly mix skin tones, the verdaccio comes through too much on the surface, and even when doing non traditional coloring I still fuck up the form. I need them now more than ever since every passing day seems less and less likely to offer some sort of golden path to a art academy or university for an MFA. I'm legitimately scared help.

>>1081 If your goal is to emulate the old masters then yes. Getting perfectly smooth gradients in acrylic is hard. Otherwise, I find acrylic easier because you can just paint over any mistakes you make as many times as you need to. Getting too much wet oil paint layered on a canvas can cause cracks as the bottom layers of paint dry.
>>1081 >So would oil be easier to use than acrylic? As always the answer isn't that simple. Both media have different pros and cons. Painting with acrylics is a lot cleaner (in the sense of cleaning time required after and during the painting process) and faster. It's a lot trickier to get smooth edges compared to oil paints. Oil paints are more involved when it comes to cleaning up. But they allow you to start a painting and work on it the next day as if nothing changed. (The paints really dry quite slowly.) Because of that slow drying time and the quality of the medium, creating gradients is a lot easier. But watch out. It's easy to overblend things when using oil paints.
>>1082 What if my ultimate goal is actually fresco? >>1086 I probably need to overblend if anything.

At some point a few days ago-as you probably noticed-the CSS and everything with it including the flags and banners-got BTFO presumably by a server side software update. I am in the process of trying to make things right but I'm admittedly having a h*ck of a time getting certain things correct. I'm going to have to call it for the day as I'd already spent an inordinate amount of time failing to put the element inspector to good use, but I'm optimistic things should be right as rain by this time tomorrow. Feel free to use this thread to offer general suggestions, make or request flags (32 x 32) or banners (300 x 100), or otherwise shitpost to your heart's content. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3B1-gWAOPM

Connecting writers to artists (and general shilling) Anonymous 10/09/2020 (Fri) 17:54:35 No. 441 [Reply]
I'm really impressed by the work on this board that you guys put out, and I'd like to be that "for exposure" asshole and get some of you to work for notpockets or only small amounts 'cause I'm a neet like you. Long story short, I'm a failed writer with a couple of short stories that could be made into comics and some stories that are too long for that but I'd like to see scenes/characters drawn from. If anyone is looking for inspiration or something to work on, I'm looking for someone who can draw better than the stick figures that I can manage. You can then post 'em on your social media and show off your work, just credit me as the writer. The "please draw my" characters come from a medieval fantasy, a 20th century cold war story with some fantasy/sci-fi elements, and a worlds-in-collision that mixes up genres but is heavy on sci-fi and medieval fantasy. If someone wants to do an entire story, my short stories include a magical girl parody that could be done in manga style, a D&D parody that could be done in a naturalist / classic fantasy style, a Teen Titans fanfic that could be done in TT2003 style, and a couple of ideas for rebooting Fearless Fosdick. If the crowgirl artist is around and available, I'd like you to draw one scene. One of the non-crow pics you did makes me think you'd be good for it. Another scene that I'm willing to commission would include fog effects, ice, lighting on different textures (metal, ice, cloth, skin). I'd like it done well so I'm willing to pay for it. So, how do we do this? Should we communicate offsite so a story is new to readers when the artwork is finished, or should I post a script online and send volunteers to it? Should I throw out a character description a week and ask volunteers to draw them and post them at the end of the week, like the theme thread? If you take commissions or know someone who does, how do I contact you? If the mods don't want this sort of thing on the board, I won't be offended if you kill the thread. Are there other places where a request like this might be welcome?
2 posts omitted.
OP here. Hey, some tangential blather is at least a response. Better than nothing. Since there's no interest in being my artslave yet, I'll post some general concepts and see if that piques any interest before suggesting anything from my writings. It'll be like a second theme thread except the leader is a little crazier and has no idea what he's doing. Here's a concept: Two board-tans (or other mascots) playing a sport together. It's a good way to show off some motion and action. Post on Friday (16th of October) or whenever you get around to finishing it. Anchor to this post. And if anyone is offering themselves for commissions, add some way to contact you.

>>527 >copy images you like tracing is a no-no, right?
>>530 Not him but "not really"-at least in the learning process. Taking the actual drawing out of the equation can expediate certain things. I don't think you should necessarily trace someone's completed work, rather I've used tracing to help me memorize the names, placements and general shapes of anatomical features for example.
>>530 >tracing is a no-no, right? Well, it's not necessarily a no-no. But I wouldn't just randomly trace things, do it with a specific learning goal in mind. If you want to consciously create great art, you have to consciously practice. And remember that you get better at what you practice. If you trace a thousand drawings, you'll be a very good tracer, but still won't be able to draw jack shit from imagination. (Maybe a little bit, but it's not worth mentioning.)

On Requests Loomis 10/13/2020 (Tue) 04:38:28 No. 487 [Reply]
This board represents a very small gathering of artists pursuing artistic self-actualization through a combination of labored study and strategic visual shitposting. We welcome all those interested in discovering the bittersweet struggle of artistic improvement for themselves to take up the pencil, the pen, the paintbrush or the p'tablet to join us on this board as friends. Please understand though that coming here expecting to solicit free or "cheap" work from our community is frowned upon-what you might flippantly spend seconds requesting can represent hours of work informed by years of study or experience to grant. Those enormous tits? Someone cried themselves to sleep trying to get them just right. That perfect dumptruck ass? Only possible through hundreds of highly detailed studies of the pelvis bone, gluteal muscles and the related fat deposits-to say nothing of the impassioned observation of countless references in extremely high resolution at all angles (all done purely for professional purposes of course). A few of us may delight in participating in request threads on other boards on our own free time and on our own terms. Doing so on our own, sparsely populated board however is a totally one sided affair where the artist can expect as payment for their labors a pitiful handful of (You)s, coupled with further outstretched hands anticipating the delivery of more requests. It's nothing personal so please don't take it as such, but as it stands I will not allow requestmaking to find a permanent home on this board-we instead choose to reach out to any such people and invite them to take their first steps on their own journey, to seize the power within themselves to answer their own artistic longing with decisive and well-informed action rather than gracelessly pleading out to we few strangers in the night: >"please help me masturbate" I hope you understand but if you take issue with anything I said-whether you're an artist/regular or someone just passing through-I welcome any further discussion on the subject to be directed to this thread for now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uO9tyyjRd4
