/trek/ is a board for the discussion of Star Trek and related properties. Please read the rules and follow them accordingly. And have fun :^) Rules 1. Posts should be related to Star Trek. The Orville and Galaxy Quest are allowed as well. 2. NSFW posts (nudity, gore, etc.) should be spoilered. 3. Global rules still apply, otherwise, just stay on topic.

Treck Girls Anonymous 04/16/2025 (Wed) 20:36:58 No. 33 [Reply]
Just finished re-watching the original, and boy, they is a significant amount of pretty gals on screen. Feels like I often hear nowadays how modern trecks are "too much sexy and relationships" and "ST is about nerd science and space first". There were sexy babes standing in the background, just being pretty since day one, apparently. I need to start paying closer attention to all this mise-en-scene.

I like Marina Sirtis....I'm not too keen on Troi.
>>151 Well nobody likes Troi for Troi, she was a dumb idea as a character. The most interesting she ever was was when she tried to pass the test for bridge officer and she was bad even at that. The rest of the time it was just "I sense <obvious thing>/<nothing because the ep would be over too soon if I could>" and "oh noes, Troi was abducted/impregnated by an alien/mind controlled". The whole idea of having a ship's counselor wasn't bad (and they actually got some mileage out of that in later seasons), but putting her front and center on the bridge was. Unsurprisingly most situations a starship can fly into don't really call for an intricate psychological assessment. I read the original idea was for Picard to be crap at personally relating to his crew so he literally had to ask Troi to handle all of that, but then of course Picard actually evolved into a human being after the first few eps so that didn't work out either. Jellico's idea of putting her in an actual uniform was good, though. She looked great in it and gained a few points in IQ and professionalism to boot.

>>154 >On the Bridge for some time. >Ro Laren wants to start bossing people >Our Guy, O'Brien informs both Ro AND Troi of Troi's actual rank Was the idea also just to get rid of the Yeoman? I didn't mind the initial introduction we got between her and Riker, because that's obviously something that could (and did) get brought up later. But seeing as there would be no internal conflicts, seems her role was DOA. I think for me her putting on the uniform would've been better just before season 4, but then you'd need someone to make her do it. I guess at that time Jellico was too busy with Total Recall.

>>155 Science/medical obviously. Apparently blue-teal-green has been an issue with trek for ages thanks to inconsistencies with lighting, cameras, costuming and greenscreen. Do a google image search for "Voyager EMH" and you'll get all three.

I'mma stir the hornet's nest and ask if there's any nu trek you like(d). I'm halfway ashamed to admit that I thought the Star Trek reboot from 2009 was OK -- enjoyable popcorn flick with nice visuals. Clearly not "my" Trek, but fine enough as a modernization of TOS. Of course at that point I didn't know that that was about the highest level of fidelity nu trek would achieve and things would just get worse from there. I made it through the first season of DIS but that was as far as I could take it -- for the rest I just read the reviews to see if it got better (as far as I could tell, it really didn't). For Picard I didn't even watch the whole first season, I only returned for S3 and then only because of the crew. I've enjoyed SNW mostly because it's more like the 2009 movie and omits most of the bullshit in favor of homaging TOS -- it too omits most of what makes Trek Trek and is really derivative, but at least appears more sincere and avoids actively offending the senses by toning down the obligatory interpersonal drama/mystery box plots that plague the rest of it. Not intended as a blind hate/rant thread, by the way. I would if possible also request that the people who screech "bad because woke" could leave their opinions at the door, but it's not like I can make them.

>>75 I liked that episode. What I like most about Star Trek is how it's willing to take stupid concepts seriously
>An improvised scene that was ultimately cut would have show Human Spock trying chewing gum. According to director Jordan Canning: "We even had this scene — it didn't make it in the cut — but we were having so much fun on set. We were in the bar set and we had a little extra time, remarkably, and Ethan and Rebecca had, like, worked out this thing. They were like, 'Okay, can we just try this where, like, I've got gum, and Spock wants to try the gum and doesn't understand what gum is for?' And I was like, 'Okay, great. Set up the camera...The two of them, they did this whole routine where he tries gum and he's like, 'Oh, maybe I should try nuts with it.' And they're like, 'No, no.' And then he is like, 'How about a pickle?' It's just, I mean, it was so silly and funny. Just finding ways for us to see Spock experiencing the world through Human eyes and the foibles around that." > < > < ....
>>115 It's a sometimes serious topic. If we go poof due to crazy alien tech right now, will the "next" sentient race on earth be able to deduce we were here and were technologically advanced?

Janeway did nothing wrong. Anyone accusing her of "murder" is fat and/or has no children. That is all.

I love my brick even though its design shits all over the concept of "nacelles need to be visible from the front", though I also like the Luna-class and Nebula-class.

Attention Bajoran workers. You are to deliver 15 cargo pods of hydraxian whale oil lubricant and one crate of self sealing stem bolts to my quarters immediately. Failure to comply in a timely manner will be met with immediate and severe punishment. Also, could Kira's mother please meet me in my quarters at 16:00 hours tonight. We have important business to discuss.

Ah, Captain! Still using the default board design? How... terrestrial. A blue gradient? Really? It’s like draping the Enterprise in a hospital scrubs backdrop. I do hope your fellow starship commanders aren’t judging you. Why, that empty space looks about as inspiring as a replicator menu in the Janus Prime cafeteria! A captain’s portal to the stars shouldn’t resemble a cardboard cutout of the cosmos. Here! Now your discussions on interstellar diplomacy can unfold against the literal final frontier. All you have to do as captain is just copy the text from the third file over to your board's CSS property and apply it. It's that easy! If you complain it’s ‘too flashy,’ remember: I could’ve made your homepage orbit a neutron star. Consider this a small... quantum nudge toward the sublime.

>>43 How does one utilize the fonts?
>>52 >How does one utilize the fonts? They must first be uploaded to >>>/res/3 so that they can be seen by everyone. Then, iirc, you use your element finder on your web browser oo the page that has the element yoh want to modify which in this case would be the board's title, and you then add a font value there with the direct link that sources to the font you uploaded. It will not look like >>>/res/2 but instead have a hash of letters and numbers like 'abcdefg12345678.ttf' (The hash is much longer than this) There's a certain way it has to be written so that they display correctly for everyone using the themes and so that you don't see it applied to everything beyond the board title. I don't have an example on hand as I can't access the CSS tool to demonstrate atm, but you should be able to understand it enough to get an idea of how to utilize fonts.
If you want to see a board with custom fonts, look at the css theme of >>>/funkg/

Turn your old computer into a real-life LCARS Anonymous 04/16/2025 (Wed) 21:35:53 No. 45 [Reply]
Want a real blast from the past, captains? Get DOSBOX & run LCARS 24 on it. Instructions for it are here: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/turn-computer-star-trek-clock-lcars-24/ Program is here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/lcars24/
Would probably be good on a touchscreen device. Always liked the look of LCARS.

Star Trek Continues Anonymous 04/16/2025 (Wed) 16:47:05 No. 9 [Reply] >>26
Just dropping by because I hate nu-trek and wanted to recommend this. It's the only fanmade show I ever watch and aside from the appearances of the actors and the terrible accent Doohan Jr. does, it really felt like a fourth season of TOS and just about better in every way, even acting. Feel free to recommend any other fan shows, but I'm betting this is as good as it gets. You can start watching here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G-ziTBAkbQ&list=PLhvh2eq-XLgqNxH6npvQxGxLCUHy90IpZ

I never got around to watching it, but thanks for the link, anon. Not sure if it counts as a fan project, since I believe it was sanctioned by CBS/Paramount, but I liked this one. https://youtu.be/mgOZFny7F50

Gul Dukat did nothing wrong.
he did not
He shouldn't have fucked Kira's mom, but other than that...
>>5 Well he wanted to fuck Kira as well... or at least Alaimo wanted to hump Visitor and he thought that should have been written in for Dukat as well. He actually goes off on his attraction to her on the DS9 documentary and Nana Visitor is clearly uncomfortable with it, trying to brush it off as an "oh you" thing. I can definitely see it in how he played Dukat alright.

Attention Bajoran Workers Anonymous 04/16/2025 (Wed) 16:27:27 No. 4 [Reply]
I have an announcement I banged Kira Neris' mom. On this most joyous occasion I would like to extend my gratitude to the Bajoran people for breeding such fine tail. I will be allowing slightly higher rations for everyone allowed to participate in the gratitude festival as well as shorter working hours for everyone else. I hope you all have found things to be grateful for during the year as my reign has been a marked improvement from my predecessor in most major metrics. We would also like to welcome new guards to the station by teaching them how to correctly bruise kidneys, volunteers will be rewarded with free medical care, double rations and comfort women once they can stand up.
