Visit the new >>>/fireemblem/ board too Thread dedicated to the discussion of games from the Fire Emblem franchise. The often asked question: "I'm new to the series. Where should I start?" for modern FE experience is Three Houses (Switch - 2019) or Engage (Switch - 2023), and for semi old school FE experience is Awakening (3DS - 2012) or Fates (3DS - 2015) or Echoes (3DS - 2017). The story follows the members of a talent agency during their conflicts with hostile beings from another world called Mirages. Mirages are based on characters from Shadow Dragon (FE1/FE11) and Awakening. Do not consider this an FE title. This is a spin-off with some FE lore and characters. Only play this if you're a fan of Persona or Shin Megami Tensei games, you're starving for more FE and its characters like Tiki, or you like anime. >Fire Emblem Heroes >Google Android - 2017, Apple iOS - 2017 It’s a hodgepodge of characters from all FE games plus a few original characters. There’s an avatar/My Unit, but their only purpose is to perform summons. There is a lot of debate on the canonicity of the game. >>1530778 Engage looks pretty fun, coming from someone who's never played it or 3H. I'm a self-admitted nostalgia and waifufag who mostly comes back to 6-10 when I want to play FE. I've been on the fence about buying a used Switch on ebay or something just to check it out, since I think my PC is too old to run a Switch emulator anyway. I want to play them both eventually anyway though.
>>1537270 Is muh QoL really that strong of a point on older games? I know it's the case on disgaea but I thought that was due to NIS being rather incompetent and adding QoL that should have been in the earlier games (and were in it's contemporaries) only until 4 and 5.

fun
>>1538619 >Is muh QoL really that strong of a point on older games? A great question, but one I don't think I can answer very well. What I meant when I said: >the advantages Engage has makes it worth more to play if anon has limited time. Is that 3 Houses has a lot to do outside of battles. You walk around the academy grounds, talking to NPCs, doing side quests, etc. And you have to teach classes as well, choosing what each student should learn so that useful skills will get leveled up. This all adds up to a significant portion of total play time, even more so if you are completely new to the game and reading everything that is being said as you discover bits of lore. Engage has much less of this. There is an area to walk around in between battles, but many of the activities are optional. Many of the important places are just glorified menus that you walk up to, such as the shop to get weapons. So it isn't necesarily that Engage added QoL and that is what makes it better to play. >>1538703 Glorious. Hand him a tome and see what he does with it.
>>1537371 it really doesn't require that much, at least give it a try
>>1540223 I was talking more about QoL on the level of being able to sort your skills on an unit at all like on disgaea, or showing attack range without having to commit to a move, or being able to undo a move that hasn't even happened yet, or probably worst of it, not getting a game over anf being forced to reload for selecting the wrong training map because NIS couldn't properly code a "retry this map" button until like D4.
>>1542000 I can't comment on disgaea since it plays very differently and I don't remember it very well, but I'd say Fire Emblem has good QoL from the DS games onward. Here are a few differences between the DS games and Mystery of the Emblem on the SNES >can see and rearrange units' starting positions on the map >HP bars for each unit can be seen on the map without having to hover the cursor over each unit >can mark each enemy to show his attack range or press a button to view all enemy attack ranges, so you can tell which tiles are safe >can skip battle animations, speed up or skip enemy movement on the map, or even skip the entire enemy turn >can make the grid visible on the map and adjust its transparency, making it easier to distinguish each tile >can select your unit then directly move the cursor to the enemy to attack, instead of selecting the tile to move to then selecting attack then selecting the enemy >can tell which enemies never move (their movement stat is set to zero) >can use items in pre-battle preparations >can also sell items, buy basic weapons, and merge used weapons of the same type while in battle preparations Other older games have some of these features and there are fan-made patches to add more in, plus I wouldn't say any of the games have bad QoL outside of the first two. But overall Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon DS (2008) and later games are better in that regard. Also worth mentioning that Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia introduced a "turnwheel" mechanic that lets you rewind actions to undo your mistakes, such as if you get a game over. This is also present in the switch games. It's not exactly a QoL mechanic since it has a big impact on how you play, and some people don't like using it, but other people really appreciate it. >>1530695 I haven't played the switch games yet. But it's probably fine. While Fire Emblem fans (myself included) like to argue over which game to start with and which order to play it's really not a big deal. All the games were initially designed to be played by children, after all. As long as it's a good game you should be able to enjoy it.
>>1504895 >>1512792 mark just changed it back: bump limit is 500 and auto-lock at 1000, with new threads made at 500 >>1528867
>>1542353 Is this due to the BA niggers spamming ain't it?
>>1542285 Sorry for the late response, haven't had much free time lately. >That list of QoL. From my experience with tactics games in general, that doesn't seem all that egregious compared to the barebones functionality NIS was missing for a decade. I think the only real dealbreakers are rearranging the deploy units and the skip/speed up movements and turns, but that may be able to be ignored when actually playing the games. The crafting/selling/buying mechanic also sounds more like an additional mechanic than just QoL to me however, just like turnwheel. Also sucks to only be in the process of learning japanese, I can understand almost half of any generic shounenslop for kids like JJK but once more complex vocab comes up I'm completely fucking lost.
>>1545833 Don't worry, that definitely was not a late response >QoL You're right about the selling/buying/merging stuff being separate from QoL. Actually, even the deployment rearrangement feature also has a non-trivial gameplay impact and people argue about whether a fan-made modification to add this feature should be allowed in challenge runs for Fire Emblem Thracia 776. From the GBA games onward you can rearrange deployment positions by default. Skipping enemy turns wasn't possible until the DS, and the gamecube game in particular is infamous for lengthy enemy turns. I don't think it's as bothersome in the GBA games, though, so you probably won't have QoL issues there. Plus if you're playing on emulator you can fast forward whenever you want. Good luck with learning moonrunes. Perhaps some fire emblem games are more suitable than others in that regard but I have no idea. >>1545817 I believe it's because of phoneposters. Doesn't matter to me either way.
I'm so fucking done with 4chan. Sorry for betraying you bros and leaving, but goddamn did I learn my lesson. That shithole is 100% unusable now, you don't even get the occasional nuggets of kino that made it worth waddling through the sea of excrement before the hack.
>>1548602 Still gonna try out Engage first at least, even the absurd amounts of lack of QoL on disgaea didn't bother much, so from what you list even if I go back all the way to the first FE ever released it may not even feel that archaic compared to going back to the original disgaea on the PS2. I am somewhat specifically interested in thracia however, if only because it's the one that seemingly nobody talks about so I can be a hipster for liking it (or trying to, in case it sucks). >Good luck with learning moonrunes. Perhaps some fire emblem games are more suitable than others in that regard but I have no idea. From experience I can tell you it can be a pain in the dick. For example, unicorn overlord. Language wise it's not exactly all that complicated, gameplay wise it can be a goddamn pain. I don't know if I'm just weird for having that issue or not, or if it's actually common but nobody talks about it, but re-learning vidya terminology in another language is not as easy as it seems, and something as simple as "select who to equip this to" can be difficult, I can read the words, understand every part of the line, and still not cobble together the meaning until I give up and try to MTL and it says something simple. >>1548835 I don't know why are you fags even still sticking around there at all, it wasn't worth browsing even before the hack and the downtime made it even worse.
>>1548924 I only ever browse FE threads for the most part, and this is the only one that didn't move over.
>>1548924 >the first FE ever released I was comparing the third game (Mystery of the Emblem, super famicom) to modern games. The first game (Shadow Dragon, famicom) is much more archaic. Getting the weapons you want on the right units is a major chore. You can only give items to other units, not trade, so the receiving unit must have room in his inventory. And you have very limited storage space in your convoy. You need to watch the full battle animation scenes, whereas FE3 lets you view shorter map animations instead. You can't click on other units to see how far they can move so you need to count tiles. Also you need to check the physical game manual to see each weapon's stats. It's still playable but I recommend Mystery of the Emblem instead; the first half of the game is a remake of the first game. And the first DS game (Shadow Dragon) is also a remake of the first game. >thracia It's a good game and my personal favorite. I've replayed it multiple times doing various challenge runs. It has some surprises on a first playthrough and some unusual battle mechanics but if you've played other games in the genre you should be fine. The level design is excellent and the alignment of gameplay objectives with the game's story makes the narrative more engaging. But the story builds on the previous game (Genealogy of the Holy War) so you might want to play that one first. >hipster Nowadays Thracia is too popular for hipster cred. The smug elitists have moved to the Vestaria Sagas. These are similar games made in SRPG maker by the original creator of the Fire Emblem franchise, Shouzou Kaga, who left Intelligent Systems after Thracia.
>>1548835 >>1548979 FE threads are the only thing I browse over there too. >occasional nuggets of kino I honestly mostly stay for people like aceman who occasionally post really old art that I haven't seen before. The relays were fun when people took them semi-seriously, and occasional good discussion, cute waifuposting, and even fun shitposting made it worth it for a while, but I feel like those moments are getting fewer and farther between. A slow thread like this is honestly perfect for FE, even if people are posting playthrough progress and stuff like that. I kinda wish whatever good posters were left would finally abandon that place and come here.
>>1548835 >I'm so fucking done with 4chan. i only go there to shitpost and laugh at fehtards
Can confirm the Japanese on FE games is not exactly easy, at least not when compared to random SoL anime stuff.

>>1573228 At least there's more than one person still here I guess.
(6.73 MB 2116x2794 edelgard416.jpg)

>>1573466 I don't have much to say.
>>1573594 To be fair it's not like there's much to say, the only FE game that gets constant new content is FEH and that's likely on /gacha/.
(2.17 MB 1377x2064 edelgard413.jpg)

>>1573615 There's hacks, but I'm not playing any right now. Really should give Cerulean Crescent or Golden Country another go, but I dropped both at around the half-way mark, which isn't very conductive to replaying.
>>1574940 Sucks life is taking too much of my free time atm or I would post about my engage playtthrough. Sadly I was never into romhacks in general, not even pokemon ones, they always feel like subpar mods, don't see the appeal.
(1.06 MB 2957x4096 edelgard410.jpg)

>>1575024 You've either been playing shitty hacks or have some sort of mental block I can't comprehend. >Engage ...I dropped that around the half-way mark too. Twice. It's a persistent problem.
>>1575078 I gave a try to even the most shilled romhacks of multiple games, they still felt like cheap knockoffs somehow.
You don't need new content to talk about stuff unless you've already completely mastered all the existing games, which I haven't. I started a fe12 h4 ironman. This is the last one before I take a break from fire emblem, for real this time. Haven't been playing that much so I'm only on chapter 11. I've also taken a look at the character roster to assess who is viable. Here are some ramblings about characters: >Marth A decent unit throughout the game. He should get some exp early on but not be the main focus, as it's more valuable to get units like Kris and Catria to level 20. It's useful to have 17 luck in chapter 10x. Eventually he will hit his level cap and may need some stat boosters to reach str and spd caps, then he can use the brave sword in the final stretch. Marth is a good option for killing the final boss. He deals 24 damage with maxed strength and should have 100 accuracy after factoring in Merric support. Four hits leave Medeus with 3HP, then you can deliver the final hit with someone else (e.g. Catria w/ gradivus) >Kris He's incredibly important as an earlygame juggernaut and can fill the axe-wielding niche as the game goes on. Knight in prologue is ideal because of the class' high defense growth, which lets you save dracoshields for your other juggernaut. Also, if he gains most levels as knight or pirate he will likely cap HP without needing to pick a HP bonus in character creation (though you could choose extra HP anyway to make him more tanky in the earlygame). Otherwise he benefits from increased starting speed+skill, as much def growth as possible, and maybe some extra strength. The luck+res bonus is another possibility but berserker luck cap is 22 so it's wasteful with this build. I reclass him to pirate, feed him early exp, and try to promote him before chapter 6, use him as a general for a bit, then switch to berserker. You have access to male mixed class sets on H4 so you can reclass him to dracoknight for some lategame maps e.g. if you want a high movement unit that kills sorcerers with the brave axe. >Marisha Her stats are great, especially magic. She's a perfect staffbot (plus you need her to use the repair staff) and an effective magic attacker after promoting. A great way to kill Gharnef. While her low skill stat is concerning for nosferatanking, support bonuses push her to 100% accuracy. Reclassing to levin swordmaster is another useful option (e.g. in chapter 20). Probably worthwhile to use stat boosters to improve mag/hp/skl. >Catria Immediately useful and has great growths all around, making her the best candidate to get ahead of the level curve and become your second juggernaut. I like to reclass her to general in a few midgame maps, which also helps her defense growth. Eventually she should switch to paladin (and sometimes dracoknight) and eat dracoshields. In lategame maps she can kill some enemies with the brave lance and can deal heavy damage on enemy phase with gradivus, while still not pushing enemy dragons below the half-HP threshold that triggers healing. If you're using someone else as paladin you could make Catria into a sniper instead but that's such a waste. Using her primarially as a mage is also possible, but H4 has extra buyable stat boosters so you power up her magic even if you don't train her as a mage. This can be relevant if you want to kill Medeus with magical triangle attacks. You can use a levin sword or make her a sage. On H4 you can even weaken Medeus with nosferatu, as the healing occurs between Medeus' attacks. >Feena Dancer. Essential. >Xane Mimic. Almost always worthwhile to use him over a generic team member because Xane duplicates whichever unit you need in a given situation and costs zero exp or other resources to train. >Merric He joins relatively late for an unpromoted unit but eventually will be able to survive a hit from lategame enemies that the other sages (other than Marisha) can't. He can use excalibur or starlight with accuracy, except at the start where he needs support and star shards to guarantee hits on wyverns. If you don't want to feed him kills you can even reclass him and spam heal before promotion, though that will reduce his magic growth. Also provides support to Marth. Ultimately I don't see a good reason not to use him on your team. >Yumina A lesser version of Marisha but still good. She's a staffbot with high magic. Speed and luck are also good, but be careful as she might die in one hit. She can get C rank tomes with an arms scroll or get some wexp through combat. Might be worthwhile to promote her with the chapter 11 elysian whip if your other units need the early master seals. While I always use her you could easily swap her with one the the other possible sages. >Etzel/Katarina/Wrys/Linde Pick one more to serve as a staffbot. Etzel and Katarina can use high level offensive tomes, Wrys has the highest magic but is extra frail and needs extra training+promotion, and Linde functions a bit differently. Linde has very high speed/skill/luck so if you're using her you can give her HP and magic stat boosters and make her your primary nosferatank / levin swordmaster while Marisha focuses on healing. But overall I don't think she's worth it. >Rody In H4 one of your early units will pick up a sizable amount of experience because you'll be killing enemies with bows to avoid counterattacks. Rody is the best of the bunch as he has high growths all around, and in H4 he can reclass to hunter/horseman. The horseman class has a speed cap of 30, like swordmaster, but the class base is 5 lower so you need high personal speed to take advantage of it and you ideally want even more speed so you reach the cap well before level 20/20. Likewise you want your unit to have a lot of skill. If your horseman has the stats for it you essentially get a swordmaster that also has bows and higher movement. Rody also has high luck so he can face high-crit enemies and has good accuracy, will cap strength, and has decent hp and def. His only real flaw is his lack of sword rank. C swords is sufficient for wyrmslayers but I don't know the best route to get there. One option is to ignore sword rank until promotion, then reclass to swordmaster and arms scroll for 60wexp, then get the remaining 15wexp through combat. Or maybe he can simply reach C rank through combat. >Caeda She can use the wing spear effectively in a few places but there are a lot of chapters where it's useless, so I prefer to use Caeda mainly as a sniper after she promotes. Even with the availability of horsemen in H4 it's still advisable to have a sniper for longbow use and snipers have higher accuracy. I typically reclass Caeda to archer shortly before promotion to get some extra personal speed. Afterwards she will double wyverns in the midgame and she has very high hit rate due to her incredible skill and luck growths, which may save you from needing to forge the longbow and brave bow. It's also useful to have someone with super high luck in order to fight enemies that have killer weapons. She will hit A rank bows without needing an arms scroll thanks to the sniper class's high base bow rank. Unfortunately she will need energy drops to compensate for her low strength. Or you could replace her, but it's probably not worth training a new unit just to save a couple energy drops. >Palla I think it's best to promote her before chapter 7 because a strong dracoknight is helpful there (although you could use Kris). For me she was level 16 this time. Eventually she may need a speed booster to keep up and she will need luck boosters to avoid getting crit, or you can replace her. If you use her in the final stretch she can work as a swordmaster, as she will be able to use lady swords and wyrmslayers immediately after reclassing. She likely won't benefit from supports aside from Kris. Ultimately she's probably fine, but if you can train a horseman (or a different swordmaster) you might swap her out. >Frey/Navarre/Cain These units are similar to Rody except they join later. They likely won't contribute very much towards clearing the next few chapters, since you should have a super-juggernaut Kris at this point, but they are viable candidates to feed exp to get a good horseman or swordmaster in the long run. Personally I'm using Frey; he joins the earliest and he receives a support bonus from Catria in addition to the typical Kris and Marth. I expect this to be relevant in killing the chapter 22 boss, for example. (side note: if a wyrmslayer has +2 might and +10 hit and two units are providing support you should be able to kill the chapter 22 boss reliably. A swordmaster with A swords and max str/skl/lck can kill other mage dragons with an unforged wyrmslayer and no support, otherwise a slight forge is useful) Frey will also get higher defense than his peers, although his luck will end up slightly lower. He comes with D rank swords whereas Navarre and Cain have C rank. If you want to use one of these units then chapter 10x is a great opportunity to gain levels. By turn 2 you can move all of your units into the center area where Horace starts except for one strong unit that will move to the top middle. As long as the unit you use to block the central entrance is a more desirable target than the unit you send to the top mid, the enemy berserkers will crowd around the entrance and you can freely shoot them for exp. Just make sure you're not in danger when a berserker appears with a hand axe and you end the map immediately afterwards. Otherwise they can still get exp the normal way but won't catch up until later. You might even forego horseman as his endgame class and aim for the lower spd/skl benchmarks of swordmaster instead. In that case the fact that Navarre caps strength earlier might be relevant. >Est On H3 she's a strong candidate for your endgame party. Although she joins late you can easily level her up in her join map thanks to triangle attack. Then make her a falcoknight so you have a faster flying unit, and eventually switch to swordmaster. She receives support bonuses from Kris/Catria/Palla. She caps out her offensive stats at a super early level and it's nice to have access to triangle attack. The downside is that she can't reclass to horseman, so training her is arguably less rewarding than training a male set B unit. On H4 she's a lot harder to train as she gets OHKOd by a lot of things before she can attack. She'll probably need some stat boosters. Plus she has stronger competition, as the other units that were competing to be swordmasters on H3 can now switch to horseman as needed. She's probably still a reasonable choice but I don't plan to use her this time. >Roger/Ogma/Barst Similar but worse than Frey/Navarre/Cain except they are in class set B by default. On H3 this means they are your horseman candidates, but on H4 the class sets are merged so their niche disappears. Roger has the highest speed and luck but will need skill boosters. Ogma starts with C swords and has higher HP but low defense and speed. >Sirius He's useful as a dracoknight early on and can be a competent swordmaster if you want to keep using him. But probably worse than Palla unless you promoted her super early.
[Expand Post]>Arran Arran is way better on H4 than on H3; he can now reclass to general, which gives him enough defense and HP to survive a critical from chapter 1 enemies. >Minerva I try to deploy her a few times so she provides support to Catria. >Leiden Could be a competent filler unit but there's no space for him. >>1575024 For rebalance hacks I don't trust the random guy who made the hack to make arbitrary changes for the better and I especially don't trust the evil cultists that make modern romhacks to understand the first thing about level design. I also have a bit of a mental block with romhacks in general. Even the good ones (e.g. Sword of Heaven and Earth) I feel hesitant to put as much effort into optimizing compa
>>1575172 >You don't need new content to talk about stuff unless you've already completely mastered all the existing games, which I haven't. Let's be honest here, you don't even necessarily have to talk about the games, you can do what /gacha/ does and basically have the thread be it's own little community. Which mind you, was how things were in the 00s with forums before reddit and twitter fucked that up. The gacha threads I follow that stuck around instead of going back to 4chan are a varying 40-60% split between functional blogposting and actually talking about the games, though whenever a new patch drops it obviously climbs back to 99% talking about the games and whining about gacha rolls (which technically is still talking about the game). I also want to know what have you bros been up to, it's simply more comfy to talk here than dealing with the 4/v/ threads that are 90% jeets admitting they are shitposting.

>>1575129 Yeah, definitely a (You) problem. >>1575172 >the evil cultists that make modern romhacks Oh, brother.
>>1575172 Man, sucks to be a compnigger but now I'm inclined to ask you what are your recommendations on Engage's meta builds? I have basically no experience with FE or tactics games aside from maybe disgaea and I still wanted to go balls to the wall with lunatic difficulty (but no permadeath). >For rebalance hacks I don't trust the random guy who made the hack to make arbitrary changes for the better and I especially don't trust the evil cultists that make modern romhacks to understand the first thing about level design. Honestly I would be inclined to say the same, I simply don't feel randos are able to do anything on par with what professional jp gamedevs can do, not even close. It's even worse on stuff like mario romhacks where they try to be the next kaizo, it's just awful. >I also have a bit of a mental block with romhacks in general. Even the good ones (e.g. Sword of Heaven and Earth) I feel hesitant to put as much effort into optimizing compa Can't speak for FE, but I can confirm a lot of pokemon romhacks aren't all that hard, and a lot really show bias for a specific typing that makes runs extremely easy once you spot the cracks in the design.
>>1575219 >Yeah, definitely a (You) problem. Never said it wasn't, I just don't see the point in romhacks when I could play real games instead. They feel more like a funny novelty than a serious attempt at a game.
>>1575213 >have the thread be it's own little community. eh I think it's reasonable to talk about related vidya things but I don't want a "community" where we talk about our jobs or our families or our favorite sports teams. Do that with your real friends. I'd rather see zero new posts than several posts I'm not interested in. >>1575219 That's partly a joke but also I have so many other FE games I want to replay, other SRPGs I want to play, and even a few non-cultish romhacks so I genuinely don't think it's worth trying something that immediately gives off warning signs. >>1575243 Sorry, no idea about engage. >>1575172 my last line got cut off >I feel hesitant to put as much effort into optimizing compared to official fire emblem games I don't mean that they're hard, just that I'd rather minmax in an official game because it feels like more of a concrete thing and other people may be able to talk about it. Plus there are often resources that make minmaxing less painful e.g. maps on FEWOD and enemy information on the wiki.org. Another thing is that the romhack could release an updated version that invalidates all the old strategies. So when I play romhacks it's generally a one-and-done rather than a continual process of improvement.
>>1575328 >That's partly a joke but also I have so many other FE games I want to replay, other SRPGs I want to play, and even a few non-cultish romhacks so I genuinely don't think it's worth trying something that immediately gives off warning signs. This, life is too short and too busy with work, and backlogs are too fucking long to waste time with shitty stuff like romhacks.
