Video Game Marketing in [Current Year] Anonymous 08/23/2024 (Fri) 00:05:48 Id: dc615c No. 1004518
I've been thinking about marketing in the video games industry and how much of a clusterfuck it must be these days because of literal communist furry pedophiles. Outside of places like imageboards and the steam community forums, I'm not sure if there's a place on the internet that hasn't been tainted by administration that's mainly ruled by the big three: Discord, Twitter and Reddit. These platforms are the biggest players in terms of gaming social media yet if you look at the sales numbers of something like Dustborn, the market usually goes in the opposite of what they say. The mobile market is thriving as a result of AVOIDING the usual twitter prudes to the fact that they're calling local politicians in order these mobile companies to cave into said demands. Yet the traditional games market while successful is plagued with issues such as censorship, poor localization, bad monetization, among other issues. You would think that by looking at Twitter that a lot of these new and original games should be selling over a million units, however most of these games like Forespoken and Tales of Kenzera usually bomb in the market despite catering to these western trends. Stellar Blade, Palworld and Wukong on the other hand have sold millions of units, and yet we STILL have a traditional gaming market that looks on Twitter, Reddit and Discord and thinks that the industry wants more censorship and ESG pandering in spite of the actual sales numbers telling these companies that "trendy trannies shouldn't be the direction of the market" yet we're still dealing with companies like Microsoft, SEGA, Capcom, Sony, Nintendo, etc. treating these people with priority treatment because they agree with the corporate hivemind. Not only that, but people who disagree with said hivemind are cast out as undesirables and are usually gatekept by HR and other corporate interests groups. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people within these companies are inflating the Twitter and Reddit numbers in order to keep them from marketing towards the proper demographic. You want to know what the worst part about all this is? By discussing the topics at hand and communicating with each other in a public online ecosystem, we're basically giving out millions of dollars worth of FREE market research, not to mention the YouTube grifters like Kabrutus and EndymionTv who basically got famous by copying ideas and posts made in the GamerGate thread. You literally have people PAYING YOU money just to listen to us, but instead you get offended by the idea just because you have to deal with El Macaco saying "We must kill niggers and faggots" despite no one actually taking him seriously. In any case, I would like to discuss the current landscape of the video game community and how it's completely fucked over by the main communication platforms being completely assfucked by leftists and how the people supposedly doing market research can't see the wider picture despite being paid millions of dollars to just sit on their ass and delete angry Mexicans larping as white people.
>>1004518 Many people know they can market outside of (((Three))) but there is an active sabotaging of any alts which is the problem.
>>1004527 That is true, it's a legitimate issue.
>>1004534 But at the same time many normalfags, and the non crazy devs or other creative pros in the past several years, have realised they can bypass much of shit that held them back before. For example shit like Slay the Princess and Lethal Company sold through sheer word of mouth, people just playing the games and having fun were the marketing team.
>>1004541 Well, yes, those are some more good examples of games that sold well in spite of social media muddling the waters. My main concerns come more from games made by bigger corporations that don't really know why their games aren't selling as well as they should, and why certain other games are selling in spite of the Reddit audience bashing on them.
>>1004541 Thing is, for every game like those that becomes popular through word of mouth, there are at least a dozen that are DOA because of the kind of thing OP is talking about.
>>1004558 I'm starting to see your point.
>>1004558 >>1004576 A pure reddit waste of space example is Among Us, it was already out for a couple of years and it got popular and made millions because of a bunch of streamers.
>>1004599 Yeah, streamers are also kind of a failed concept since they only stream popular games and not newer games that people would be interested in since normalfags are only interested in games they already know. I'd go more in detail but it's 4am and everyone is most likely sleeping.
>>1004606 They either stream popular games live or they do prerecorded playthroughs of more niche games. Though that's more in line with the old Let's Play-ers.
>>1004609 Yeah, but even the more niche games are played with audience reactions in mind rather than if it looks fun to play. I would make the argument that streaming overall is a negative when compared to something like prerecorded video, since with a prerecording you can edit the video and just show off the interesting bits. Although the most popular YouTubers aren't necessarily the best ones, since while YouTube really does have people who are into video games and actively recommend cool old games, at the same time there are also a lot of grifters and engagement baiting channels on the platform, that's not to mention the outright shilling that happens on the platform due to games companies wanting to dictate who gets access and who doesn't.
>>1004527 Maybe it's the brian damage, but what is "Three"?
>>1004617 Read the OP. >>1004606 Streamers will stream whatever they're paid to. If you want your game to become "popular" just send them a bunch of keys for both the player and the chat, maybe some merchandising and watch the playerbase grow since they'll then convince their friends to dip in the flavour of the month game they will never play ever again after 2-3 sessions.
>>1004618 I did read the OP, it turns out I just have brain damage. Thanks.
That's why I say to keep filling out Capcom's surveys and using every, single chance you're given to complain about this shit. It's the chance you have to speak to them, and if they ignore it you know they've dug their own grave entirely on their own. Like here, tell them you hated the tranny shit, denuvo/engima protector, and lack of lolis in Dragon's Dogma 2. https://jp.research .net/r/P_DD2?lang=en
I wish comedies would cast an all retard crew
>>1004518 In terms of sociopathic media, the big factor is that the Big Three are rather upfront about advertising data-tracking APIs that purport to tell your marketers who your audience is via analytics and numbers, even though they often poison the statistics and deploy bots to waste ad spend. Again, I'm going to be shilling Amazing Seasun Games' Snowbreak: Containment Zone because it actually went into the fire and learned for itself what worked and what was bullshit in less than a year (for reference, it initially had a male collectible character in the beta alongside the other female chars), changing rapidly to the point that it actually pissed off other developers in Shanghai in how it disrupted the market (most infamously, Mihomo). It SHOULD be studied more often, especially because it concerns a lot of what #Gamergate has discussed and provides a practical example to point to, but because it saved itself from end of service by deploying TnA you see a lot of developers shying away and trying to sink it despite its runaway success. It even helped Mecha Break, a related but otherwise separate game, get widespread acclaim in its playtest because they were able to hone in on consumers' interests and apply that experience to another genre, retaining the sex appeal and applying it to the female pilot models but otherwise focusing on /m/aximization towards the West with little compromise, to great success. One small factor that doesn't get brought up often is that developers have gotten savvy with analytics themselves and can track who spends and who is engaged with their game and deploy surveys to them directly for feedback, and thus they can cut out the parasitic middleman and pay attention to the almighty wallet. This DOES require an always-online precedent however, which means that ironically live services have provided a barrier against pozz.
>>1004541 >thinking these games are made in a Vacuum and with no prior userbase whatsoever Naive or ignorant, choose one
>>1004718 Are you pretending to be an idiot?
>>1004768 How so? Please tell me how those games didn't have any marketing whatsoever, and if that was the case, how do you think the "word of mouth" started to happen?
(1.47 MB 1245x1169 anon kun is dumb.png)

>>1004775 Again are you genuinely pretending to be retarded? Because you're adding words and meanings to my post that I never said.
(49.23 KB 666x375 84ujlr.jpg)

>>1004599 And the game's source code is so simple that it got raped by hackers easily.
>>1004783 >For example shit like Slay the Princess and Lethal Company sold through sheer word of mouth >thinking these games are made in a Vacuum and with no prior userbase whatsoever Reading comprehension isn't your strength now is it?
>>1004710 >which means that ironically live services have provided a barrier against pozz. How ironic.
>>1005116 Are we sure that these analytics are going to their own servers and not some third-party service that could easily filter shit? Last time I checked, most of these surveys are often done on Google Forms, at least with indies, but that is kind of expected for small studios that can't afford the infrastructure.
>>1004541 You'll have to see how these games progressed in their word of mouth as its development progressed. If you wanna differentiate successful word of mouth and unsuccessful ones, check the game itself and the audience it generates. Say, you are an indie dev and have a somewhat beta build game - you post it on your close locations first. Your personal discord/irc, agdg threads, gamedev forums (i don't recommend unity forums unless its one of the coding channels). Places you already are connected to. Then you post on a similar game genre forum eg. a visual novel thread, your game could be not even related to it but just "here's my game, what you think?". Most will ignore but some may ask where you at, how you did it, where can I see more? And that's where you'll get your first feedback. And also you can gauge what kind of audience is interested in your game
>>1004518 I wouldn't call anything success until the sales covers the budget. And many companies aren't really open about their spending. Especially SJW trannies don't talk about it..
>>1005715 Because their games usually fail in the market VS what they actually spend. Not to mention you have idiots like Phil Spencer letting go of the talent at Tango Gameworks despite them putting out a hit game for a lower cost. That move in itself is assinine considering that Tango was likely let go due to them wanting to put more money into something like Starfield or the Perfect Dark reboobot linkanwhile, you have Hi-Fi Rush a game on a shoestring budget and was sent out to die, but managed do make a name for itself despite Microsoft working against it.
just make a video like this and post your link, watch the dough and eyeballs roll in

>>1007887 It is fucking insane how much money ugly eroge make. We're talking 50 grand a month for stuff that can look like a PS2 cutscene.
>>1007887 If I ever make a video game it's going to have huge boobs, possibly bouncy ones.

>>1008557 Oh my god I completely forgot about this. Sony said they wanted to have 12 live service games by 2025, I think they reduced that to 6. This must be one of those. They spent over a billion on this endeavour by the way, an unfathomable amount of money. They could have funded hundreds of medium sized games and given the PS5 a PS2 tier library, instead they setup the slop house hoping to court whales.
>>1008557 Is the way we view the GenZ trend now the same as how adults viewed the edgy millennial trend back in the 90s-2000s?
>>1008557 This would be 20% less gay if it was about fighting for free software roights against proprietary billioware niggercorps.
>>1008654 Do not blame youngsters, they don't like this shit either as proven by Saints Row 2022 and Concord flopping. This is what millennials thought was cool when they were 19, that trailer has the vibe of stuff like Attack the Block. I'm not sure zoomers even like gaudy action, I can't immediately think of anything big from their generation like that.
>>1008077 I agree, especially when it's in the title screen of every modern indie game. That shit is obnoxious.
>>1008655 It's probably funded by the government, which is why they're fighting against the billionaires, just because they're rich.
>>1008557 >Nigger screech song Yeah, no thank you. Tells me everything I need to know.
>>1008738 Remove modern rap in games Bring back heavy metal and butt rock.
>>1008654 I think the edgy 2000's is going to age way better than whatever the hell is released this era.
>>1008758 You mean the corpo 20s?
>>1008753 >Remove modern rap in games Remove any and all rap from any form of media. It has no place in anything and belongs only in the trash.
>>1008765 Wrong.
>>1008758 It is, just look at the commercial today. It's absolutely a Expectation and Reality Meme. They're not even trying to say buy our stuff out loud.
