Concord developer shut down Anonymous 10/29/2024 (Tue) 18:17:34 Id: a222e7 No. 1032879
They also shut down Neon Koi, a mobile dev. Two studios in one day! Though both are completely understandable and I don't think anybody will blame SIE for doing it. https://sonyinteractive.com/en/news/blog/an-update-from-playstation-studios/

I decided to look into Neon Koi because I didn't recognize them from this announcement. They were a German-Finnish company originally named Savage Game Studios, founded in 2020 and purchased by Sony in 2022. They had no releases. They were working on a "AAA live-service action title" prior to their closure.
>>1032889 Is Sony giving up on live service games entirely?
>>1032892 That's the smartest thing to do right now, downsize your games into middle sized games that don't need microtransactions to turn in profits, focus on gameplay and decent, good vs evil story and you're golden. Of course sony being sony, that's not what they are going to do. I expect them to double down on gigantic games that 3 billion sales to turn a profit.

<Just wanted to remind people that Snowy spent $400 million dollars alone on the game's development alone. This doesn't account for other costs such as Soyny buying the studio, merchandising the game, licensing the game, advertising the game, etc. When you do account for thise costs, the "real" budget for Concord starts at a MINIMUM of $500 million dollars: https://odysee.com/@MidnightsEdge:d/sony-lost-much-more-than-a-mere-400:e
>>1032879 And nothing of value was lost. >>1032911 >Concord starts at a MINIMUM of $500 million dollars So that is the price of being both totally delusional and out of touch with reality. Neat.

Wait, hold up, what does that mean for Concord? There were rumors about the game returning as a F2P game because it was getting updates on Steam. Is it dead for good? I sure hope so.
>>1032962 If it's being reworked, it's being reworked by a different studio. If the updates keep coming then we know Soyny just can't let go.

>>1032987 >If it's being reworked, it's being reworked by a different studio MFW Bungie gets tasked with turning it into an F2P live service game and then Bungie dies too
>>1032962 >>1032987 It is not being reworked. The game is "permanently sunset" according to Sony's official statement. >"After much thought, we have determined the best path forward is to permanently sunset the game and close the studio.   I want to thank all of Firewalk for their craftsmanship, creative spirit and dedication." https://archive.fo/R4cGr
(589.21 KB 745x1072 koi.png)

>>1033031 Reportedly the studio suffered from a big culture problem. If a studio puts out a flop, like say Aliens: Colonial Marines, that's fine as long as the dev is a proven studio. You're not going to bat a thousand, even Valve has had flops. Firewalk spent almost a decade, hundreds of millions of dollars, and millions of manhours into a game that couldn't muster 700 players. Sony must have realized the time and effort they would have to spend into making it a functional studio would be greater than simply buying/founding a new one. The additional closure of Neon Koi also suggests a planned divestment from what Firewalk had specialized in, making the studio reductant. This is a case where mass layoffs are unfortunately justified. Very few studios can pull an Ion Storm and put out a Deux Ex after a Daikanata.

https://archive.ph/wip/ev6kZ >After a Tough Few Months, Sony Says It'll Keep Making PS5 Live Service Games Literally burnt half a million+ dollars and they still think they'll succeed.
(88.84 KB 900x900 millions.jpg)

>>1033060 Meant literally think they'll succeed right after metaphorically burning half a billion.
>>1033060 The difference between half a million and half a billion is 499.5 million. They burned more dollars than the GDP of Micronesia.
>>1033060 Hey, if they want to bankrupt themselves chasing live service shit, let them. Fucking retards.
>>1033060 What is their plan seriously? Crash and burn? What are they trying to accomplish? Despite the Schadenfreude, I'm starting to be genuinely worried.
>>1033056 ...How is that tail attached?
>>1033128 >What is their plan seriously? That one of these 7 live service games they have spent hundreds of millions of dollars will surely be successful. In other words a combination of gambler's fallacy and sunk cost fallacy.
>>1033130 Lewd!
>>1033060 Why didn't they make a FGO/Genshin clone and call it a day? Those games costed pennies to develop compared to what they have already burned.

>>1033130 >HollowLife
>>1032879 Reminder that Soyny's financial reports stated that they will use all of their IPs to push for DIE propaganda. Expect even more flops.
>>1033204 >all of their IPs oh no, more shitty and faggy games featuring all 5 exclusive IPs from sony, how terrible
>>1032889 There are a lot of German studios using Japanese names mixed with other languages, that are all cover ups for pedophile rings. Around 3 or more years ago some anon posted a report on this, on /pol/. One of the cover ups is the Kawaii Nihongo, a (((German))) group that preys on children, under the disguise of being a group that teaches Japanese to children and teenagers only. It is worth investigating those, along with the likes of this Neon Koi.
(148.03 KB 437x449 merchants.png)

>>1033149 too smart of a strategy. You have to understand that these people do not have any grasp on reality, they can't understand common sense because they don't understand what common is. The higher ups see the world through excel spreadsheets and the devs see the world through twitter, they know nothing of the common man or what they desire. Reminds me of when in the movie "Battlefield Earth" the aliens are looking at the two fugitive humans trying to understand what makes them tick, and the humans, starving, find a rat and eat the thing raw on the spot and the aliens go "Look how they eat that thing, they must love it!" and when the humans are taken back by the aliens they try to bribe them with dead rats and are angry at the fact that it's not working. These people are so far detached from reality that it's easier to compare them to aliens that it is to compare them to a normal human being.
>>1033205 It would pain me to see the likes of Ape Escape or Gravity Rush used for propaganda. Thankfully Sony has forgotten all of their formerly fun IPs except for Ratchet & Clank. There was a long time when I wished Sony would remember Jumping Flash!, but now I just thank God that I never lived to see the day when Robbit got brought back just so they could say that since he's technically a robot, he's a non-binary tranny.
>>1033220 im convinced everyone at sony has convinced themselves into believing they no longer own anything from the PS2 era.
>>1033131 How the fuck can you get the position of CEO of a giant enterprise like that, while being a mononeuronal monkey? How the fuck do one get to that heights being retarded? I unironically want to know
>>1033222 They still use Ratchet & Clank. They seem to see Jak & Daxter as just a prototype Uncharted or something, and they see Uncharted as just a prototype Last of Us. Sly Cooper is a baby's toy, clearly. They had to get uber edgy with InFamous, and then by InFamous 3's standalone DLC you're playing as some woman with literal neon hair. Can't wait for their next game where they replace their samurai protagonist with a woman.
>>1033232 It's more Naughty Dog that doesn't want to use Jak than Sony. Remember that a lot of ND's current staff are from Uncharted and beyond, most of the really longtime devs left after Uncharted 4. >Sly Cooper They planned a revival with an animated film, but it never went anywhere. Probably scrapped after the failure of the Ratchet & Clank movie.
>>1033240 They did let another team make Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier back in the day. And Sly 4 was a new team as well. But yeah the failure of the Ratchet & Clank movie clearly shut down future plans for any of these, except Ratchet itself, for some reason. Even though of course Ratchet was going to fail in theaters. They basically didn't release it at all. I live in a major city and only one special theater downtown was showing it, for one week only. If I wasn't a huge fan of the series, I'd have never known it was releasing at all.
>>1033240 I am still upset this never released, even though I'm iffy on the character redesigns I do really love the look they were going with, they had a great use of color and low-key lighting. It's rare to see anything animated that doesn't go for the "Pixar blobface" school of design. And Sly would have been much easier to adapt than Ratchet!
>>1033224 >How the fuck can you get the position of CEO of a giant enterprise like that, while being a mononeuronal monkey? Anon, MS bought Rare because they unironically thought that they owned Donkey Kong. And prior to that, Delta bought Western Airlines because they unironically thought that they owned Western Bank.
>>1033224 What, you thought that salary correlated to competence?
>>1033128 >What is their plan seriously? Money laundering. That is what the video games industry is all about.
>>1033232 > They had to get uber edgy with InFamous inFamous is fun.
>>1033240 >Ratchet & Clank movie. There was a ratchet and Clank movie? I knew about Sly Cooper movie before Ratchet & Clank movie.

can't be assed to properly convert
>>1033224 >How the fuck do one get to that heights being retarded? Nepotism.
>>1033263 I kind of like it, but not nearly as much as Sly. I was very excited when it released, but it ended up being a shooter with some okay but not great climbing mechanics. InFamous 2 improved the formula a lot, but it was never as fun as Sly.

Seems like Bruce Straley had his own opinion on Firewalk Studios closing. Guess the part about the studio spending hundreds of millions of dollars didn't fully sink in even though he was informed about such a statistic. In case you didn't know, he was the game director behind The Last of Us and some of the Uncharted titles. https://archive.md/OkFHV https://nitter.poast.org/bruce_straley/status/1852743312265838658
