You might find this thread isn't so positive. I don't use Xitter or Blue Sky but I'll give you my take on GG, anyway. It started off as usual vidya gaem gossip, I think the root origin was that Zoe Quinn had sex with five journos, which turned out to be a hoax started by a scorned ex-lover. What turned the Quinnspiracy into GamerGate was the frankly bizarre behavior of journos in response, imo they were the ones who turned this into a culture war battleground. The Quinnspiracy would have been forgotten in a few weeks if not for the extreme backlash, white knighting and "Gamers Are Over" articles that turned it from gossip about some random woman into an anti-games media 'movement'. The funny thing is the woman who originally wrote that essay, Leigh Alexander, actually hates game journos, If I remember correctly, she said they're spineless cowards and an extension of marketing. In the early days there legitimately were people who wanted muh ethics, people forget how many industry/games media people were pro-GG like American McGee and TotalBiscuit, but it gradually descented into gayops and general anti-SJW discourse that's closer to the modern YouTuber grifter scene you see with TheQuartering and SmashJT. I think that's ultimately what really pushed a lot of people away, not necessarily the anti-SJW sentiment but the kind of people that tends to come from, i.e. people who unironically say "poz" and "small hat tribe". GG for all intents and purposes is dead, the thread remains as a watercooler. The energy is gone and most moved on.

Then again, the rest of your post is largely hand-wringing about tangential (and barely relevant) elements that literally any polarizing event which gains a lot of publicity goes through, as well as repeating tired bullshit said by aGGros. No shit GG attracted parasites who wanted to capitalize on it, the fact that it was big enough to have it happen at all was significant. GG never actually "died" either, its just taken different forms and spread across the larger gaming sphere in terms of attitudes and behaviors that have been adopted by gamers at large. The actual controversies at issue in GG were undoubtedly won by gamers in most respects, and what GG has spurred will continue to live on. People weren't pushed away by the elements you described, its just that the issues that cropped up in GG revealed unpleasant truths that some people in the crowd weren't willing to accept because it went against their long deeply-held beliefs about the world. The 2015/16 Trump election campaign was the great filter for most pro-GG types because people who saw what happened during GG witnessed the same media tactics, lies and corruption in the greater MSM sphere, not to mention the same political leanings of the media outlets in question.

Something to add on is that Wikipedia and the dying establishment institutions had way more "credibility" and prestige back then as opposed to now; I remember a lot of my former friends read the Wikipedia summary which went with the "muh soggy knees" narrative and believed it at face value. This was the early days of the Smith-Mundt repeal when President Odumber was still "cool" and pedogressivism hadn't unmasked as the suckup movement it was so people still believed they could trust the media and it took a decade of straight lies, #MeToo, and four years of a soft coup in which they were treated like dogshit for them to wise up. Another factor was moot censoring and heavily disapproving of discussion of #GamerGate (because he was trying to woo a Gawker Media journal) which caused an exodus to 8chan prime and its growth and subsequent influence on online popular culture (for example, the NPC meme originated from a post on 8chan prime which posited a "Limited Souls Theory," Yandev originally posted devthreads on 8chan prime and was a major driver of traffic in the early days, as regrettable as that was, etc).

What kind of stories and shit were you expecting from people? Do you have the major timeline for the first 2 years worked out for GG? That was the most critical time I'd say, and a lot happened. From shit like bomb threats at conventions, to biased debates, to the FBI clearing GG of harassment, to the fake news stories, mass censorship of nearly every major site which discussed GG in a positive light, the IRC logs of aGGro pedophiles like Sarah Nyberg being leaked, all the DDoSing of 8chan and the false flag CP spam of people like Dan Olsen, to the GJP list being dropped, to later things like Shirtgate and Operation Torrential Downpour. IMO its impossible to get a truly comprehensive history or understanding of GG because it encompassed so much and so many different parts of the internet, shit was wild.

It's been 10 years since #GG started, I'm not sure what's the reason behind this or what you'll get from it will be worthwhile. Nearly everyone involved has moved on and people memories of that time are hazy at best. I think the #GG thread could dig up a lot of old stuff. I wouldn't even be against reciting what I remember from that time but it would take me ages and I'm not sure if it would be worth it. Plenty of times we had people come to do a "both sides" documentary only for them to twist the narrative.
