The horrible death of Shenmue Anonymous 05/15/2025 (Thu) 07:25:44 Id: 3e0f72 No. 1360754
I just get myself thinking from time to time how horrible it is that Shenmue never reached it's completion, and how a complete piece of shit Shenmue III was, after so much trust was put into that hack Yu Suzuki, only to have him pocket the money and deliver essentially a filler episode while arrogantly announcing in the game's credits that there would be a guaranteed Shenmue IV after this fiasco. What would the industry be if Shenmue was actually successful? I'm not talking about Sega itself, but the industry as a whole. Would we ever have GTA III and it's current format? Would the whole tale of Shenmue ever be satisfying and become a memorable event in the history of video games and general media? How would anyone manage it better than it was (giving how utterly mismanaged this whole mess was since the first game, and even before that, during the Saturn phase of the project)? Was it ever possible for it to be successful with it's (mostly pretentious) proposal of a multi chapter game saga taking over 10 games to be complete, even before the first game was made? Does any anon here followed the news about Shenmue, the very first game, back in the day, and shares this lamentation about the series that was never completed, that comes from time to time when remembering it all? Was Shenmue III such a scam from the very start, as it seems to be? Or was it mismanaged (again) mid-production and became garbage due to too much "success" from the kikestarter and too much attention from the media and fans? This is just a mix of rant and daydreaming about the possibilities that never became a reality, that I tend to go back to from time to time, regarding this particular series, given how it truly felt like something so unique and out of the norm at it's beginning, mixed with the melancholy of never having it at least be completed, even if was just to make sure it was, indeed, garbage without any means of salvation, as it looks like now. What are you thoughts, anons?
>>1360754 I don't really give a shit about Shenmue, except for the fact its bloated, downright ludicrous development budget was the biggest factor in cutting the Dreamcast's shelf life short and sealing SEGA's fate as a player in the console space. So fuck Shenmue and the now 40 year old hasbeen manchildren who fellate it 24/7. Yakuza mogs it in every single way. Gamedev cult of personalities that enable disasters like this and Mighty No. 9 were the worst thing to happen to the industry.
I ain't even a Shenmue fan but finding out they did that whole song and dance to get 3 made only for it to end on another fucking cliffhanger is a punch in the dick.
>Get a chance to finish the story after 20 years >Do not finish it. I just dont really get what they were thinking here.
>>1360857 >Gamedev cult of personalities that enable disasters like this and Mighty No. 9 were the worst thing to happen to the industry. This. >>1361620 >I just dont really get what they were thinking here. Money. Retards threw money at them, so they realized that there were lots of emotional manchildren that would waste money on something that pandered to their nostalgia, so they just tried to keep it going on forever. They missed the point that even manchildren have their limits and that the retards threw money at them to have a conclusion to the games, not to have infinite sequels.
