Games where you're an unabashedly terrible person? Anonymous 10/13/2025 (Mon) 20:56:22 Id: a9f840 No. 1844102
I was going to title this "awful protagonists" instead, though it sounds better it might be misunderstood. And not games where you being The Worst is a le epic twist in the last 5 minutes or some subtext, but a very core part of the protagonist and their context within the narrative. I've always been interested in this, because most games have you as: >literally Jesus >morally conflicted emotionally complex anti-hero >Milquetoast McGee >blank slate >[Press A to SAVE BABY] [Press B to KICK BABY into THE SUN] So having the protagonist be a bad, unlikable, unjustifiable person is a rare and interesting choice.

Soul Nomad and the World Eaters has a "demon path" alternate route you can play on your second playthrough where instead of resisting the demonic asshole offering power in the cursed sword the main character is given at the start of the game, she give into it willing and totally. It starts out relatively sane, but quickly devolves to the point even the game's villains are terrified of the player character and team up with every named character not already dead in an attempt to stop her. Gig himself arguably counts in the main path, though he's only a voice smacktalking every NPC.

I want an anime styled game where you're a sadistic IDF soldier killing and raping Palestinian children in the most visceral stomach churning ways. I'm sure a Japanese man could program this within a week or two, as a proxy and outlet for their own cruelty against the Chinks.

>>1845211 San Andreas tries to pretend that CJ is a decent person doing things "for the community." Oddly, it was the first time they did this, since Claude was basically pure selfishness with no pretense of anything else, and Tommy was Scarface, where you are meant to relate to him but still see him as a bad guy at the end. Hmm... I wonder why they made CJ the one who you were supposed to see as a good guy? Then Tony is a bad guy, but Victor is a "good" guy again. What a coincidence.

Planescape: Torment is the old school answer. The evil stuff you can do is the type of cruelty that destroys the souls of your victims.
>>1844102 Pathologic 3's demo came out in nextfest and im happy to report that the Bachelor is as much of a snappy dickass as he was in the first game, maybe even worse now depending on how you want to play him. in Pathologic 1, doesn't matter whether or not if you're playing as him, he's a huge dick to everybody, horribly callous about the circumstances the town would face and he ends up wanting to explode the town since he had lost faith in humanity after a while.

Wasn't the main draw of Overlord the fact that you played as "bad guy?" I never played it but iirc you're a conventional villain but end up being the hero anyway because of some dumb bullshit so I guess it doesn't really count.
IIRC the first Destroy All Humans! has you acting pretty unsympathetic in your collection of DNA, sure you had good reason to collect it, but it got pretty evil in the way it was done.
>>1849044 >because of some dumb bullshit IIRC It's because all the other "Heroes" degenerated into hedonistic tyrants between your death and resurrection so you end up cleaning the place up by fighting them.

Say what you will about the quality of the games themselves, but at least they never tried to pretend that Kratos was a good guy. Understandable motivations, sure, but he just fuck-killed everything in his path to his goals - regardless of whether they were trying to help or hinder him. The entire original God of War series was written as a Greek Tragedy wherein the protagonist brings ruin to himself and everything around him due to his own weaknesses and character flaws. Nu-GOW was a mistake, not only based on the flaws of the games themselves, but they retroactively destroy Kratos by trying to redeem him. It fundamentally altered the entire storyline from being a tragedy, to a comedy. Remember, Greek Comedies didn't have to be "funny" or satirical the way modern comedies are Nu-GOW never should have been made. It really only existed because Balrog became a father and wanted to project that out into a story, as well as virtue signal to the "games are art now, grow up" crowd. Pretty sure the only reason why they set it in Norse Mythology was so that they could "pwn the white supremacists" and "Nazi Chuds". Now, rumor is, they're going to fuck up Egyptian Mythology by shoehorning Kratos into that setting - when all they ever needed to do was to have a new hero that fit with Egyptian mythological themes, weilding new signature weapons of Egyptian origin, and fighting Egyptian mythological creatures and pantheon. Maybe make him an agent of Akhenaten, killing off the old gods to make way for Aten - using that whole schism and brief flirtation with monotheism as a starting point. But however they approached future God of War titles, Kratos's story should have ended in Greece. Allowing him to survive his own downfall, let alone seek some measure of atonement breaks the character completely.

>>1848633 You don't play as Dr. Robotnik in Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. In fact, you don't even play as Sonic. You play as Has Bean, who has the exact same sprite as Carbuncle from Puyo Puyo, because they didn't bother to change it. But according to deep Sonic lore, Has Bean is one of the Bean inhabitants of Beanville who Robotnik already roboticized (so his Carbuncle-like form is actually a robot body), but he retained his free will and is rebelling against Robotnik. I say according to Sonic lore, but of course this game isn't canon to regular Sonic lore, it's a tie-in to The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon series, seemingly taking place between the pilot and second episode. And that whole series was seemingly intended to take place before the "Sonic the Hedgehog" (SatAM to fans) series that aired at the same time. That series especially can't fit in game lore. However, the Mean Bean Machine did appear in Sonic Mania almost 25 years later, which is part of regular Sonic lore. Or rather, it's part of a splinter timeline known as the "Classic Timeline," but that's still part of the wider main continuity. Anyway in Mania you control the Mean Bean Machine as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, or Ray, with no sign of Has Bean. But the point remains, you never play as an evil character in any variation of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. You do get to play as Robotnik in Sonic Adventure 2, but he's pretty sympathetic there. Sure he blows up the moon, but it didn't cause any long term damage to the Earth, so it's fine. You have to look at multiplayer spinoffs, like racing games, if you want to play as really evil characters. Robotnik has no sympathy in Sonic R, and Metal Sonic and Eggrobo both seem independently evil as well in other games they appear in. Metal Knuckles never really has a personality in any version, not even the UK comics, where he is a very important character, so maybe you can say he's not evil, just a puppet. Also there's Tails Doll. In the Archie Comics, which of course are a different continuity, he's an eldritch horror created by Robotnik that transforms into the giant vagina squid from Watchmen and destroys the city. Luckily Sonic reset the timeline at precisely that moment, due to an independent adventure he just happened to be having at the same time, so it all worked out. But Tails Doll was super evil and seemingly a Solaris-level threat, or at least somewhere between the Biolizard and Perfect Chaos. I guess he was approximately equivalent in power to Chaos Dingo, who is from a third continuity, Sonic Underground, which actually did cross over with the Archie Comics and was part of that multiverse. Maybe Archie Tails Doll was the Mobius Prime version of Chaos Dingo, who was himself clearly the Underground version of Perfect Chaos. And regular Dingo was clearly the Underground version of Metamorphia from the UK comics. One could make an argument that Neo Metal Sonic, with his ability to transform, is the main continuity version of Dingo and Metamorphia, but that might be a little bit of a stretch. Also there is Mimic, from the IDW comics, which are supposed to be main continuity. I suppose he could also be the main continuity version of Dingo and Metamorphia, he's an assassin, like Metamorphia, but it's still not quite as blatant. But anyway you don't play as Dr. Robotnik in Mean Bean Machine. You play as a good guy named Has Bean. Now we wait for the Sonic Underground game where you can play as Sleet and Dingo. And Bartleby. He's not evil, but we should be able to play as Bartleby, damnit.
Does this include games where the protagonist is unwittingly manipulated into committing some evil. Games like Bioshock and Spec Ops to some extent (in that he manipulated himself) come to mind. I am sure tons more examples of protags getting duped or rug pulled exist.
>>1844102 Now that the dust has settled, is this game actually any good?
>>1866411 You are going to get shit right down your throat, 20 entire pounds of it.
>>1866411 Funnily enough, I finally played mouthwashing since its spooky season and I had this in my backlog since last year, and I found it quite enjoyable. It did feel weird that my interactive novel was at times interrupted with segments of gameplay, but I loved the atmosphere of the game as you try to put together the pieces of what has happened . Its short enough where its just around the length of a movie, and it delivers a very self-contained experience that makes it the sort of thing you don't mind playing once a year during the spooky season.
>>1866411 Its ok. The narrative is the best part, but all the discussion around the game kinda gives it away which, that in turn makes the twist less effective. A whodunnit when you already know the who isn't very fun. Without that, the game is a weak point and click adventure game. There are some puzzles that are fun but nothing too crazy. Then you have sections like the warehouse with the stupid invisible monster that is just fucking awful. Artstyle is 5th gen-adjacent. Not much to say there. It has some effective sequences but nothing trippy enough to note. It's not even particularly gore-y outside of Curly. tl;dr its an Amnesia TDD clone with a decent narrative twist but nothing to go too far out of your way for.
