Game of the Month #10 (July Edition): Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (GCN) Anonymous 07/04/2024 (Thu) 21:28:06 Id: 525ef7 No. 986377
>What is this? This is exactly how it sounds: A game is chosen each month (which will be relatively or totally obscure on purpose) with hopes of bringing new avenues of playing potential to anons with narrow video game perspectives. The goal isn't necessarily to pick bad games, but obscure ones nobody, or as few people as possible, have played. You can play the game and then use that fact as bragging rights to others! You can use it to broaden your backlog horizons! or you can forget about it. It's up to you. THIS MONTH: Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean For the Nintendo Gamecube, NTSC version cause fuck you it's the 4th of July >Where do I get this? https://cdromance.org/gamecube/baten-kaitos-eternal-wings-and-the-lost-ocean-usa/ >How does it play? I always do a terrible job at describing these, but let's say it's basically a deckbuilder RPG, but an actually good one and not like those shitty indie games being published by the thousands. I want to take advantage of this space to vent on how absolutely fucked beyond repair the modern mainstream information repository of the internet really is. They will not stop shoving remaster news and bits and bobs everywhere. Literally had to resort to watching crappy videos from 2013. GUIDELINES FOR FUTURE GotMs: Poll for MONTH YEAR: https://poal.me/kwvaqd If you do not like any of the games in the poll, you can either add a new entry manually, or reply to the OP with a different suggestion. Don't come crying to me if you don't like the game, blame democracy. If you DO suggest a game though, please, report all relevant information on the game (magnet/dl link, interesting mods, guides, tutorials on tech, speedrun etc.). Feel free to suggest any and every game you can think of, bonus points if it's games that barely anyone has played or talks about in the [Current Year] or that fit the month thematically. However, try and follow these rules: 1) No game that relies on modern hardware. If the game cannot be pirated or emulated properly, or no working emulator for the game exists, most people won't be able to enjoy it, rendering the thread kind of pointless; 2) No always-online games, meaning no live service games or mobile games that are dependent on external servers, unless a backup instance of said servers has been created by its fans or the offline content is significantly larger than the online content; 3) For multiplayer games, provide only free to play games that let players create their own servers, or games with local multiplayer that can be set up to play online (requires someone to be a hostfag, or, and may Allah forgive me for uttering these words, using Parsec); 4) No game that requires gimmicky controls to be enjoyable (guitar pedals, Wiimotes, cameras etc.) unless they can be easily remapped or translated into some other control scheme. Once again, I'm terribly sorry it's taken me this long, I'm currently in the middle of the mother of all shitstorms and can scarcely come back here for more than a few hours a week. It should all blow over by October, luckily. Secondly, since this didn't begin on the 1st of July, we're extending it to the 19th as per the 15 days rule. Finally, this is more of a me problem, but why is rentry considered spam?
Reminder the HD Remaster version is a shitshot ruined by some tranny LOLcalizing it to death.
>>986378 No worries, thank you for everything you do.
G4's old review to the prequel of this game went viral awhile ago. It's.. certainly something.
They recently released these games on pc. Are the ports any good or should i stick with the original? >how absolutely fucked beyond repair the modern mainstream information repository of the internet really is Yup. I remember when you could search google by date and year specifically. Before everything was so sanitized you could find some obscure forum long dead that had exactly what you were looking for. Nowadays i don't think the search engine is the only thing to blame here. Internet as a whole has shifted to a really centralized platform with a barren wasteland left behind.
>>986420 Nevermind >>986385
>>986420 It's a lazy compilation port with lazy upscaled ai pre-rendered backgrounds and jap dub only. I didn't look at it for more than a few minutes to see if the script was terribly different or not beyond the dumb agitprop translation changes.
Ok i already tested dolphin and it works great. First time trying it. Anyone know a good key configuration to play on keyboard? Its an RPG so i don't think it will be that much of a hassle.
>>986420 >They recently released these games on pc. Are the ports any good or should i stick with the original? GameCube hardware's 480/30 with 60 in menus, Switch's 768/max 60 with dips, Dolphin's uncapped/30 (60 with codes) with 60 in menus, Steam's uncapped/max 120. 3D graphics are a lot better than GameCube hardware, a bit better than Dolphin. Resolution's the main game-changer. There's new character models, more detail on prerendered cutscenes, and remade fog and waterfall systems. Modern shaders fix washed-out lighting. 2D graphics are a lot better in menus and UI. AI upscaled backgrounds look a bit better. The dub's removed, some soul left with it. Can mod it back but some dialogue desyncs. Retranslation has unmistakable activism. It may desync a modded dub. Quality of life has auto-save, cutscene skip, help features, New Game+, a music playlist, bulk selection for Magnus, a Magnus log, hard mode (New Game-), game speed, battle speed, and toggles to one-hit kill, auto-battle, and disable encounters. Completionism's more convenient. Was buggy at first, now most are patched. That's what's up so people can decide. For me it's Dolphin.
>>986480 Shame. Hopefully someone can slap the old translation and dub back. Pozzed translation is the biggest drawback for me. Anyone know why me game is sped up? Even the voices sound like the chipmunks
>>986487 Didn't already everyone complain about that with the english dub and switching it to surround sound?

>>986491 I had game speed up to 150% I always wanted to play this game but never owned a GC back then. Hope its good.
>>986487 The dub removal and activist retranslation make it Dolphin for me. They're related: producer Koji Nakajima confirmed the dub removal was over retranslation discrepancies. >“In developing the remastered version, we tried to make adjustments on some of the expressions to match the current era. That’s why we made the difficult decision not to use English VOs for this remastered version, due to the discrepancies that will happen.” Remaster shills then ran a "dub was never good" narrative to save the remaster and its activist retranslation from criticism (if never good, sacrificing it for the retranslation doesn't matter). Players can mod the dub back with text mismatches. I couldn't find a mod to reinsert the unpozzed GameCube script. https://steamcommunity.com/app/2146170/discussions/0/4347743556800239756/ >>986498 150% game speed will do it, good you unfucked that. Was reading this Baten Kaitos page on wiki.dolphin-emu.org. https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Baten_Kaitos:_Eternal_Wings_and_the_Lost_Ocean Found a graphics mod there, may get Dolphin's graphics closer to the remaster. Link broke but this works. https://archive.org/details/baten-kaitos-hd-texture-pack >Upscaled texture with Esgran (2D) map face skills text etc.. >All the 3D fights are retexturing 1 by 1 >All boss Retexturing 1by 1 >UI has been modified, but you can remove it by deleting the UI folder

>>986522 BK1's dub really is garbage for the tertiary characters. The major characters are acceptable most of the time, but if a character has one voiced line, they're are horrid. Origin's dub was legit good though.

>>986480 >backgrounds These help Baten Kaitos feel like GCN's Final Fantasy more than Final Fantasy does with Crystal Chronicles.
Anyone besides Dolphin-anon playing for the first time?
>>986522 >Remaster shills then ran a "dub was never good" English dubs were never good regardless of the game.
>>986648 Big budgets have pulled it off. BK's a lower budget Gamecube game with many words and shitty sales so my expectations were low but it's been decent.
>>986560 >The backgrounds help Baten Kaitos feel like GCN's Final Fantasy more than Final Fantasy does with Crystal Chronicles. Tetsuya Takahashi once was a Final Fantasy developer who left with Square employees to start Monolith Soft, the Baten Kaitos development studio better known for Xenoblade. Yasuyuki Honne (map designer for Chrono Trigger) painted the maps for Baten Kaitos, and Masato Kato (the story writer of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII) wrote the story for Baten Kaitos. Lots of staff crossbleed and Square DNA.

As GDQ's in the news, the 100% speedrun for this game's 338 hours, one of the longest ever. Any%'s 8 hours.
>>986659 >10 hours of actual playing and 328 hours of waiting for the shampoo to works its magic I dunno why people flock to this being the longest speedrun when it really isn't an interesting speedrun in itself >>986651 >dub apologist We'll just have to agree to disagree.
The stat's interesting, not the process. RPG speed runs generally aren't as interesting as other genres since going fast misses more of the point.
What's good to know before playing too far? Any missable content? Choices that matter? Party member pros and cons?
>>986400 I will never get over how this just STARTS with the Great Replacement. You could fucking say anything on television in 2006 lmao >>986667 Most RPG speedruns are a meme more than anything. They're rarely popular speedgames. Runners play games that are fun to speedrun, that's why you see games like Doom and Mario 64 so much. Methodical RPGs are not fun to run. If you look at HLTB stats, a leisurely completionist run of the game is around 280 hours. That 338 hour figure is a possibly a meme, that's going to be a semi-casual playthrough. >>986671 >Any missable content? Yes and for the love of god don't worry about it. Trying to do everything in this game will have you playing it five times longer than you'd actually enjoy.
>>986672 What missable content's most worth worrying about?
>>986674 The thing that makes the game take so long to speedrun; shampoo that turns into hair after over 300 hours of playtime. Like I said, it's a meme. Most 100% runs actually go for 99.97%. Ignore that alone and you can probably clear the entire game under 120 hours if rushing. The other thing would be the Magnus, they require evolving and waiting and combining and it's not worth it. There are over 1000 of them. Don't worry about it, I'm not sure the devs even intend you to collect them all.
>>986672 >That 338 hour figure is a possibly a meme It's not, there's something that takes two realtime weeks to happen, menus don't count twoards that (including result screens), so the 100% speedtun is some esoteric bullshit where you stay in menus as little as possible but only actually play a bit every so often, actual playing time is about 10-13 hours
>>986676 I'm asking what's optional and worth doing, like side quests with good plot or character exposition.
>>986679 A lot of the missable stuff requires you get certain Mangus and Constellations. That's actually hard to say if you should do it all, it's based on personal preference, I guess. If you're really concerned, there's a guide here. Skip to section 41. https://archive.is/sxfqE As you can see it's a bit of a mess, so don't worry about it a ton. You can do a lot of it before the final boss.
>>986679 >>986681 The first disc of the game doesn't allow backtracking between islands, the main thing that's actually important and possible to miss till disc 2 are the class up magus. These aren't particularly hidden (I think they're all rewards for beating bosses, or in chests in dungeons) and only the highest one matters, but it really hurts a character to be behind. Here's a list of only them. https://archive.ph/wip/mcHMJ As for anything that's important beyond 100% completion for its own sake: Warrior's Momentos has to be kept around and let to evolve for a scene later in the game, you can miss saving some soldiers in a castle sequence, and there's also 7 short quests of no real importance. https://archive.ph/wip/ppZd6
>>986377 So whats the difference between the gamecube version and the steam version?
(149.82 KB 512x464 464646466484.jpg)

>>986700 come on nigger >>986480 >>986522
>>986700 Already answered but TL;DR Native HD (albeit through AI upscaling) and a different translation. Some people don't like the new translation because of 4kids tier censorship. References to alcohol are replaced with "juice", for example. It's also undubbed, you can say it's meant to be "faithful" but some fans feel it's just lazy. Above all else, the number one complaint is the controls. It feels like playing GC game with a keyboard.
(21.77 KB 324x311 60niggers.jpg)

>>986498 Well yeah if you want to play these kind of games at faster speeds it doesn't work like Switch emulation or PC does, you will get chipmunk voices from it.
>>986377 Oh wow, this is the first one the game of the month is a game I had played back in the day. I actually have pretty fond memories, and I even started a replay a few years ago, but then got stuck somewhere mid-game at a boss. I think I should dust off my savegame and finish it again. I'll be playing the original release on the Wii of course. I remember liking the prequel even more. I had to import it from the US and buy a FreeLoader just to play it because it got released at the tail-end of the GameCube and never made it to Europe. The US GameCube cases are so weird. >>986378 Don't worry man, it's not like anything bad will happen if we are off by a few days. As far as I'm concerned this could even be a one in two months thing, it's not /v/ has nothing else to play. >>986400 Wow, this video physically hurt. Who wrote this this? A 12-year old?
(316.65 KB 660x2194 1467155724334.jpg)

>>986754 That was G4 like 16-17 years ago, that review was probably from 05 or something.
>>986754 >Who wrote this this? A 12-year old? No it was written FOR 12 year olds. Subtle difference.
>>986754 It sounds like a game more in this thread had played than hadn't. What boss got you stuck?
>>986754 >>986884 I never played the game back in the day, but did have a GameCube. Xenoblade got me on Monolith's Xenogears and Xenosaga, then I started my first emulated play of this years ago, when Picture Magnus used to mess up the emulator. Is that fixed now?
>>986704 >References to alcohol are replaced with "juice", for example. Said changes are in Japanese as well due to new CERO standards.
>>986888 >I never played the game back in the day, but did have a GameCube. Xenoblade got me on Monolith's Xenogears and Xenosaga, then I started my first emulated play of this years ago, when Picture Magnus used to mess up the emulator. Is that fixed now? I think it's fixed. https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Baten_Kaitos:_Eternal_Wings_and_the_Lost_Ocean Fenrir tested Dolphin revision 5.0-174 on Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4 GHz and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 to report "the game doesn't slowdown with Dual Core Enabled during shops and with picture magnus(at least for me) anymore."
>>986656 That explains it. RPGs were a smaller world then.
(149.66 KB 1417x934 monolithsoftart_091312.jpg)

>>986560 >>986656 Reminds me there was a special New Years art on Monolith's site a decade ago. I wonder if there were ever plans for a sequel, or it Yasuyuki Honne just thought it was a neat subject for a drawing.
>>986884 > What boss got you stuck? Geldoblame. I booted up my old save game and it has been almost six years since I had last saved. Geldoblame has a bullshit insta-kill move, but after an hour of leveling and after improving my decks a bit I was able to defeat him on my first try. Now I'm at Wazn.
This looks to be a very successful game month this time, I'm currently going through another game so I can't participate yet but I'm always down for 2000s RPGs.

Strategy guides for games that haven't sold very well rarely get scans, good this one did. I have now reached the end-game character-specific quests and it really pisses me off when a game gives less EXP (or none at all) to characters who don't participate in battle. Now half of my party is lagging behind because I never use them. I think I'll skip their quests this time around, I did it once and that's good enough for me. Plus I gained a couple of levels which will come in handy during the endgame. I knew what I was getting myself into this time, so it wasn't really that bad. Mizuti's boss fight was a gimmick, so this left me with only two fights with underlevelled characters. I had to make sure their decks were decent and the fight became manageable. Now it's time for the final stretch. I remember it being quite a time sink with no save spots near the end, so I won't tackle it until the weekend.
