Dynamic Music in Vidya Gaems Anonymous 07/17/2024 (Wed) 19:16:24 Id: bafc0f No. 990998
You guys, I love this gimmick so much. It's always a given that these types of soundtracks will have guaranteed bangers, music changing on the fly allows for such creativity that's massively been underappreciated, shoutouts to Jun Chikuma for being the first to pioneer it in BOMBERMAN.
The original System Shock had that, but since people didnt seem to notice or care, the second game didnt try to have dynamic soundtrack.
I like Chikuma's music but I don't remember her doing anything dynamic unless it was in Bomberman Hero or something, or Bomberman 91 I think with some of the screen/level transitions? Arcadia has the obvious boss theme.
>>991004 Bomberman 94 I mean.

>>991000 System Shocks dynamic music was broken and worked half of the time. System Shock 2 has dynamic music and it changes depending on your location and if you're under attack. I also wish there was a mod for Half Life 1 or 2 with dynamic music.
One of my favorite elements of modern Fire Emblem games is the dynamic music. Seamlessly switching between a battle and map version of a theme might be a relatively simple concept, but it really added to the experience.
Soul Reaver had dynamic music with multiple variations of each track, but this is absent in the PC version for some reason.
Don't forget Deus Ex. The return to UNATCO themes are the best songs in the game in my opinion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tDjJkFyL_Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcxrsaT2nAQ
>>990998 Not exactly "dynamic music" as in a sole composition that changes it's rhythm or adds layers depending on a game situation, but DOA3's survival mode had this thing where music changed every time a new rival jumped in, blasting their own themes. It even worked on tag-team survival matches. DOA5LR ditched this little detail and instead loops your own character's theme throughout the whole match, mind you survival matches tends to be long so hearing your own theme looping gets boring fast. >>991010 >System Shock 2 It was loop-based and did rely heavily on location, I recall going back and forth one room in MedSci just to hear the transition >mod for Half Life 1 or 2 with dynamic music Imagine a layered "Klaxon Beat" that adds beats only during combat >>991043 I like the Hong Kong streets theme
This is another one I remember, shooting webs at the planters triggers the combat track loop
It only really works with pattern based music formats like general midi or modules. You can layer or crossfade prerecorded tracks, but it doesn't sound as good imo. Audio in general is sucking in games lately. The only step forward recently was steam audio getting open sourced ray traced reverb and occlusion, but considering nobody even uses openal I doubt it will get adopted heavily. I can't think of any game with a soft-synth that dynamically changes parameters based on gameplay. That could be a cool effect like the lead line getting more industrial on low health.
>>991000 Strange enough, Bioshock Infinite had it. Sort of.
>>991078 Aw yeah
>>990998 Metal Gear Rising and Devil May Cry 5 are also good examples. Although MGR does more with it than DMC5.
>>991078 >>991210 Man, i miss 90's spidey, atleast im glad kids still see Peter Parker as Spider-man, regardless of how much media pulls the nigger. >>991010 >System Shocks dynamic music was broken and worked half of the time. Not really, lots of things factor in on the music in SS, not only combat, but SHODAN presence aswell and if you have/have not deactivated droid production in the level, thats when you start hearing all those funky sounds in the audio.
>>990998 The first time I ever paid attention to dynamic music was this game.
>>991184 >I can't think of any game with a soft-synth that dynamically changes parameters based on gameplay Does this count?
>>991184 You can thank Thief for patenting several sound-related things.

Don't know if the yakuza boss themes count, they usually are synched with the intro. There's also the RE4 mercenary mod where the music changes when you activate your boost (Krauser music rules) https://youtu.be/YIo9MUknSoI?si=wvXNUsT1rJh8uo6o
>no mention of iMUSE i am disappoint
>>990998 >No mention of Rez >No mention of Ratchet & Clank 1 >No mention of Jak 2 / >No mention of Mark of The Ninja >No mention of Assault Android Cactus Anons please.
