>Like imagine if something as powerful as the GBA came onto the market for like $60 or so.
The thing about consoles is that it doesn't matter if they're glorified pre-built PCs, tablets with bluetooth controllers or low budget raspberry PI devices with built in buttons. At the end of the day, the selling point continues to be branding and exclusives. Nintendo struck a nice balance where the Switch's infamously weak hardware doesn't matter because its hybrid functionality taps into the mobile market, so much so that a literal mobile port on the Switch isn't remarkable because you're not buying it for the graphics. They also don't need to hire half of India to make cinematic experiences, inflating the fuck out of their budgets. Their branding is so good that Nintendo fans will play all of the Nintendo-approved franchises and circlejerk over how they're true gamers for recognizing that NES character in Smash and how Ocarina of Time invented 3D while not knowing what Dragon Quest or King of Fighters is. Their excellent brand management plus exclusives almost overshadows their anti-consumer practices.
Frankly, I think the future's gonna boil down to two things: Games as a service and digital-only. Steam is self explanatory and will probably get worse once Gaben isn't around to push back the infinite growth meme. Nintendo's been trying real hard to create an Apple-like walled garden environment (see: their shitty app), even updating their content policy to fucking ban you for "inappropriate use" outside of online environments. Even before that, they dipped their toes with ideas like the Labo (just how brainwashed are our customers?) and the 3D Mario collection (Just how far can we push our artificial scarcity model? How unfamiliar are people with emulators?). Beyond that, if Sony and Microsoft abandon their game divisions (not being game companies first gives them a safety net, always), I could see the likes of Google giving the market another shot but only chasing mobile micro-transactions and gambling since suits don't give a shit about pushing the medium forward.
