Weekly Shonen Jump Anonymous 05/07/2025 (Wed) 06:26:24 Id: b45cf7 No. 65801
Weekly Shonen Jump is a weekly manga magazine that is known for many hits, old and new, from Hokuto no Ken to Kimetsu no Yaiba and before, between and after. Its table of contents tends to reflect a combination of the state of a series (anime airing, etc.), its tankōbon sales, reader votes (indicating how much the magazine-派 enjoy it), and so on. Jump is currently in a transitional period since a lot of its big hits of the late 2010s such as Kimetsu no Yaiba, Boku no Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, World Trigger, Black Clover, Yakusoku no Neverland, Chainsawman, and so on either ended or were transferred. This is a thread to discuss this magazine and its series.
These last two years I've preferred to stay 10-20 chapters behind on series so I can binge a bit if I really get into a manga (hasn't happened recently). I've soft-dropped lots of series despite reading everything in it before. It's hard to catch up honestly, especially when a lot of series just aren't interesting. I'm on ch. 15 of Shinobigoto now and it's gotten pretty good. The main character being chewed out by the operator tsukkomi is funny, but unfortunately the MC, while inoffensive, is not really likable. I wish he could have an actual personality - I love how Gintoki really has a strong personality, for example. Does anyone know how well it's doing saleswise? It's TOC rankings are decent enough so I'm not worried, but if I had to guess I'd say its sales are below 10k... The artist is getting better at poses and action scenes and overall composition and the writer has some very nice lines and the character dynamics are some of the best in the magazine right now, but there's still some things that need to be fixed. Art-wise the excessive number of lines in long hairs is one thing, and the noses and mouths are a huge thing that could be improved - if you cover the noses and mouths the faces look really high quality, they really mess with the overall impression. And the facial expressions feel too dead a lot of the time.
Also, I read the latest witch watch chapter, and I didn't find it funny at all. Shinohara is really phoning this in. She got 30 butterflies in one chapter with a bad guy out of nowhere? It would have been so much better to have some sort of thematic ties or character development or anything. The development doesn't feel deserved.
>shounen The magazine stopped being for boys decades ago
>>65803 I noticed he keeps drawing the same kicking pose a lot. I hope the nips haven't been giving him a hard time for that. He really puts a lot of effort into his art.
>>65805 Yes, iirc the average reader age right now is between 20 and 30. And half the readers are probably female (and I'm sure the majority of the money spent by far is female)
I also think it's a mistake that (and he does this often) the windup is always drawn big and the impact is drawn small. It's already not good that most of the windups lead up into a miss but at least the miss should be drawn big with an impactful feeling like here a WHAM into the ground showing how strong the attack could have been.
More on the mouth thing. This is a serious scene. The art is pretty detailed and touched up. And yet the mouth is a circle with 2 lines drawn in it and one use of the fill tool. I hope someone advises the artist on this. I'm too lazy to use send a letter myself. Oh wait iirc jump plus has an online form you can send, I'll at least try that. But look at how much higher fidelity the face feels after removing the nose and mouth (and filling in the blank yourself).
>>65819 That's the board I'm the board owner of, and no thanks I'll be posting here. 🤫
Jump-adjacent but wtf weekly young jump has a manga about a guy getting locked into a chastity cage by a student lmao. Has this mag always been this raunchy?

I'm frustrated that the new manga has lots of red flags which smell of axe or low sales dragged out til chapter 50. First he put his big girl fetish in again in the first chapter prominently. People are going to be turned off early on. Then there are lots of little things I could say but mainly: regardless of the setup it feels like the kid gets a magic sword that can take out a huge monster kani for no reason. This is not even near the same tier of "undeserved" as Boku no hero. Also just inconsistent feeling writing like the whole story we see him wanting to be part of a heroic tale and then in a near climactic moment he says "I don't care if I go to Valhalla" etc. I just want to save everyone. Which could be a good character moment but instead just feels like he's indecisive and not committed. If you're going to spend that long on certain aspects of his character it would have been better to just give it a straightforward payoff. He should have just gone "I WILL save everyone AND be a hero etc." His editor is probably new. I wonder who it is. There's some editors that I have a hateboner for, I'm assuming it's one of them.
Reading Syd Kraft ch 13. Misery is sooooo cute! Her design, her character. Tsutsui has mastered creating lovable female characters.
