Small Games Thread Anonymous Id: 8499dc No. 2064
This thread is for small games of all shapes of sizes. A game can be "small" in many ways: >Small screen size >Small form-factor (like a console) >Small in play time >Small penis >Many small things in the game >Theme of the game is about small things >Small in file size >Any other ways that are interesting For file sizes, the game should be small in proportion to the system it's meant for: >For modern PCs, or 8th gen onwards, cap it around 1-3 GB >For consoles like the PS1 or PS2, maybe a few megabytes For very old or lightweight (in other words, small-ish) systems where game sizes are small by nature, it would be more interesting to see the large games you could play with them, for example >a NES rom in the megabyte range >a SNES rom in the 10-20 megabyte range >a Flash game in the 100-megabyte range, preferably not the standalone release ones meant to be played on desktops If there's a game that you feel is small enough, is interesting but doesn't quite fit into any one of these boxes, you can discuss it anyway.
Here's an entire tetris game in 300 bytes of HTML: <body onload='setInterval(onkeydown=d=>{for(d=d||5,(e=d.keyCode)&&(d=e%2?e%3?-1:1:5),t="",d=c-d,e=a|b<<d,0>d|a&b<<d&&(a=e=parseInt((a|b<<c).toString(d=32).replace(/v/,""),d),b=new Date%2?1:3),c=d,i=1;31>i;)O.innerHTML=t+=".#"[1&(1<<30|e).toString(2)[i]]+(i++%5?"":"\n")},666,a=0,b=3,c=32)'><pre id=O> copy-paste it into a text file and save it with ".html" or play it here: https://aem1k.com/tetris/ Apparently people call this code golfing.

.kkrieger is an entire first person shooter in a 96 KB executable. It was made back in 2004. You can find it here. It runs pretty well on wine too: https://www.myabandonware.com/game/kkrieger-chapter-1-cl1

You might not remember this but there was a brief period in which Mario with portals was popular. Unlike other stuff at the time, this was made in a game engine called "love2d", instead of Unity or Gamemaker. I don't think Godot existed at the time. The site for it is still up: https://stabyourself.net/mari0/ . Apparently the developer also has a demo for a new game called "Timelines" where you backtrack in time and create parallel universes to solve puzzles. Maybe the concept has been done before?

Apparently the largest game for the NES is Kirby's Adventure, coming up at a whopping 768 kilobytes. For the SNES, it's Star Ocean, coming up at 6 megabytes compressed and 12 megabytes uncompressed. Yeah, just like the SuperFX chip, there also existed a hardware compression chip add-on called the S-DD1. Apparently the only other game to use that chip was Street Fighter Alpha 2. Star Ocean just looks like a Chrono Trigger knockoff to be honest, going by the screenshots. Come to think of it, Square did release a lot of RPG one-offs besides final fantasy like Secret of Mana in the SNES era. I also confused them up with Enix RPGs at the time.

>>2064 >>Small screen size Like the GBA Micro? Or that Game Gear Micro? >>Small form-factor (like a console) Like the PC-Engine? >>Small in play time Arcade or console wise? >>Theme of the game is about small things Played the leaked Dancing Eyes remake for the PS3, yet? >Small in file size <For modern PCs, or 8th gen onwards, cap it around 1-3 GB You mean like talking about Yu Crossing Animals, which is less than 100 MB? <For consoles like the PS1 or PS2, maybe a few megabytes The "smallest" games I can find for the PS1/PS2 and Saturn are 100-200 MB at least. And if you're curious what games are that size, it's either the titles belong to the budget SuperLite and Simple Series line of games or game compilations. And if you're wondering WHAT game comilations, stuff like the Psikyo Shooting Collection and Sega Ages releases on the PS2, "A Collection of Classic Games" that Activision did for 2600 and Intellevision games on the PS1, and Konami's "Antiques: MSX Collection" that was first released on the PS1 as a trilogy (With 10 games per release) before being compiled all into one package (So all 30 games together) on the Saturn.

>>2070 >Like the GBA Micro? Or that Game Gear Micro? I suppose, but it'd be more interesting if the game used the small resolution in some unusual way, For example, this is an 8x8 resolution FPS: https://voxelvoid.itch.io/8p-8x8-fps Years ago I found a pacman clone (probably in flash) that had a really tiny resolution, probably something like 64x64. Can't find it anymore. >Played the leaked Dancing Eyes remake for the PS3, yet? I'll try it out once I scrounge up enough money to get a better desktop or a ps3. How's the emulation scene with RPCS3 nowadays?
>>2070 >Arcade or console wise? Either works. It's just that the "smallness" should be interesting in some way or be fun. Like the warioware minigames or joke games that are a minute long at best. Arcade games that have an average playsession of 30 seconds could be nice to see too.

>>2064 >Small penis So, I guess that covers most JRPGs. Because, you know... Asian characters.
