Applying a 20mm Hispano cannon to a Cessna 172 /k/ommando 04/18/2025 (Fri) 11:19:26 No. 12681
Hello. If you were to attach a 20mm Hispano cannon to a Cessna 172, where would you personally attach it to and what direction? I’d probably attach it below the pilots seat just forward of the CG and have it facing backwards so the plane wouldn’t fall out of the sky.
>>12681 Wasn't that cannon already mounted on several piston based fighter aircraft. Just mount it in the copilot's seat with an oldfashioned interrupter gear to stop it from shooting off the propeller. Larp as the red baron.
>>12686 Yea it’s a spitfire cannon. But the spitfire amongst the peak of pre jet Ww2 aviation design. The problem here is we have a trainer aircraft that can just barely take off with four people in it on a hot summer day. And I can’t imagine what would happen if you were to fire the damn thing facing forward, the plane might go in reverse.
>>12686 I’m probably gonna do the calculations when I get home, I had a dream about it last night so now I’m autistically hyperfixating
>>12688 Please share, this is getting lulzy
>>12978 I’ll do it tomorrow if I remember

>>12681 I'm not aware of the dimensions, but would it be possible to fit 2 cannons in the wings? That would of course be while ignoring that the plane might fall out of the sky when firing, if the wings are strong enough to even handle the recoil alone.
>>13988 I came here to post about the Rhodesian Air Force's experience with the Reims Cessna FR337 Lynx attack aircraft. Different beast to the 172, though. Thailand did use some Cessna 172s converted to the Wren 460 standard for observation and light attack.
>>14411 Yea I need to see how they set that plane up. >>14364 The plane definitely wouldn’t be able to withstand forces like that

>>14540 Unfortunately, very few pictures of the RTAF Wren 460s exist. They wore two colorschemes, picrel and a camouflage scheme. This is the only picture that I could find with a possible weapons loadout, look above the wing strut, going forward. This is not a standard Wren 460 feature, and if my memory serves me right, was removable and could either house a machine gun or a camera depending on the mission. I read it in a book from a veteran's memorial/library, which got rid of most of its books a couple of years ago. I would need to get a hold of a book (I forget whether it is the one by Thares Punsri from 2004 or Rach Ratanawan) before I can give you more accurate details. What I can confidently tell you is the the Wren 460 is not an ordinary 172. It has a lot of features like added strakes, vortex generators, enlarged flaps and elevator. It's also canarded. Not to hijack this thread, but the RTAF had some really cool equipment in the 1970s and 1980s including a single engine, miniaturized OV-10.

>>14563 >>14411 Wren 460 was based on the 172's beefier brother, the 180/182 was it not?
>>14605 Shit, you're right. I thought it was 172 based. The joys of writing stuff without a reference book.

>>14647 It's cool, everyone forgets it for it's twinky meme twin. Took a young eagles flight on a 182, only reason I give a shit tbh

>>14664 Nice. Never was a Young Eagle, but I did do a couple of discovery flights one in a 150 and the other in a 172. While it reminds me, I believe the Israelis mounted a bomb rack to a Bonanza (look under the wing's center section in this image, I am not quite certain what it is, but those are not the gear doors).

>>14671 Based, flew on a bonanza too. Have a combat caravan for your trouble

>>14674 Thanks. Have an SF260.
