/k/nife - Knife General /k/ommando 04/21/2025 (Mon) 04:42:24 No. 13680
Post knives. Ask questions about knives. Discuss knives. I want a knife recommendation Answer the following: >Fixed or folding? >Intended use? >Blade length/overall length wanted? >Local laws to consider? >Budget? Resources >Freehand sharpening guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWU_qTp3DLM >Primer on knife steels https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/10/19/knife-steels-rated-by-a-metallurgist-toughness-edge-retention-and-corrosion-resistance/
>>13680 i have some old pumas that are really amazing. but i feel like im too much a retard to always have them and not fuck them up so i keep a shit no name gas station folder in my pocket instead.
>>13680 What's an alternative to the Cold Steel Magnum Tanto XII?
(1.97 MB 1334x1046 KABAR.png)

My Beloved Darling I've got a larger older Buck That I use as a general purpose knife too, but the tip is broken and I've neither bothered nor paid to fix it in 2 years now
(1.43 MB 1231x824 BUCK.png)

>>13737 My poor disheveled baby
>>13680 >Fixed or folding? The fewer moving parts, the less likely to fail. I've fixed up a few folding blades that were broken and discarded innawoods, only problems I've had with fixed blades were cheaply made ones with no tang >Blade length/overall length 5in blade is about the biggest I've ever wanted/needed, bigger than that and it's bulky and heavy to use >Budget? Don't cheap out

>>13742 Shameless bump with the folding knives I fixed The Silver one has an aluminum handle that got scratched to hell by whatever environmental forces tossed it into the woods before I found it, but the blade had a full coat of rust I had to clean The black one's locking mechanism was broken so I replaced it with a new piece of steel

>>13708 Cold Steel is practically the only game in town when it comes to Americanized tantos in that size range. The only knife I could find of a similar size was the Extrema Ratio Waki, which is more expensive and mall ninja.

>>14515 nice, didn't know about that one, I wish Ka-Bar would make an elongated tanto in that size range.
>>14515 looks nice in satin
>>13680 This mad man made his own knife with the intention of using it replace a hatchet and potentially even saw in the field. I don't particularly want to get into home knife making at the moment, is there something similar - perhaps a tad bit shorter than what he made available for sale? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6WjyFGpzzw
>>14650 There are traditional knife patterns meant for chopping if you're inclined to the ol' batony chop-chop. I would recommend looking into the leuku pattern, with brands such as Stromeng offering good ones.
>>14807 Thanks for the suggestion, checking it out. >if you're inclined to the ol' batony chop-chop I was thinking it would be nice to have a very multi purpose knife for a few trips that I want to try out.
(219.21 KB 1276x2048 Bajonette.jpg)

>>13708 You can probably get a vintage bayonet in that size.
>>13742 >Don't cheap out I know it's blasphemy, but if I can get a Chink knife copy of a 130 dollar knife for 30 bucks with like 70% of the quality...
>>14885 Buying a chink copy knife means they're probably cheaping out on both steel and production method. Expect corrosion and possible breaks. Chips in the blade will be more common too.
>>14594 I've had this exact knife for three years now and it's never failed me, great little thing.
>>15091 I am looking at this Huang Fu brand right now, reviews online are pretty solid and they make copies of famous knives.
>>15098 I don't see anything wrong with them after a look-up, but be mindful of the possibility of worse quality steel. If you're good with more frequent sharpening you'll be fine, you should be taking pretty diligent care of your blade in regards to humidity and cleaning already anyway.
>>15098 With cheap, no-name Chinese knives, you don't really know whether they're actually using the steel they advertise, whether they've heat treated it properly (or at all), etc.
>>15127 Mainly just looking for a beater knife for miscelaneous tasks and don't want to shell out for that. Glock is my go-to for chopping wood, opening stuff and it is indestructable, but it doesn't hold sharpness at all. It's more like a pointy stick than a knife. Sometimes you need to cut too.
>>15158 I think their prices have gone up recently, but Condor always had some solid knives for that sort of thing that weren't very expensive.
(308.00 KB 2896x2896 171 - k09RB2j.jpg)

I like my GLOCK knife.
>>15271 You must not have a use for cutting then.
